<p>It&#8217;s here.</p>
<p>Facebook, the 900-million-strong social network that knows more about us than even our closest friends, will become a publicly traded company within the next hour. </p>
<p>Private equity dealmakers will celebrate alongside cadres of newly minted millionaire engineers in Menlo Park, Calif., while retail investors the world around will clamor amongst themselves, tooth and claw, for the chance to share in a mere fraction of the riches.</p>
<p>And yet, after a year of watching tech IPOs &#8212; Zynga, Groupon, LinkedIn, Yelp &#8212; let&#8217;s all admit that it kind of borders on anticlimactic.</p>
<p>We know we&#8217;ll most likely see a nice pop in the share price after Mark Zuckerberg rings in the Nasdaq bell remotely from Facebook&#8217;s spanking-new HQ in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>From there, like a floating jump ball up for grabs, the social networking giant&#8217;s closing stock price is anyone&#8217;s guess &#8212; and by the looks of my Twitter feed, <em>everyone&#8217;s</em> guess. There&#8217;s already a site dedicated to tracking what price Facebook&#8217;s stock will settle at when the markets close, a page <a href="http://facebookipodayclosingprice.com/">peppered with numbers</a> posited by the digital elite.</p>
<p>Today is about the money. And yet it is also more than just sitting and watching the ticker tape roll by. For the first time, Zuckerberg&#8217;s vision of making the world a more open place will finally apply to his own company.</p>
<p>We got our first taste of it when the company filed its S-1. It&#8217;s where we saw that more than half of Facebook&#8217;s 900 million monthly visitors are visiting the site via mobile devices, a channel in which the company has yet to figure out a coherent or viable monetization strategy.</p>
<p>We saw that Zuckerberg retains a tight grip on the company&#8217;s future &#8212; tighter than most CEOs, akin to the likes of Google&#8217;s co-founders &#8212; holding voting rights on 57.1 percent of Facebook&#8217;s mighty class-B shares. He is so tied to his company that he is cited as a risk factor in Facebook&#8217;s S-1, of course.</p>
<p>And now we&#8217;re witnessing the first defectors from Facebook&#8217;s nacent advertising strategy, as with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120515/facebook-is-still-figuring-it-out-will-advertisers-and-investors-wait-around/">General Motors pulling its $10 million dollars</a> in advertising on Facebook earlier this week, citing it as an ineffective use of the company&#8217;s massive marketing budget.</p>
<p>What we&#8217;ll soon see is Facebook&#8217;s less-pretty public profile, so to speak, with Zuckerberg holding court over earnings calls every quarter, taking heat from investors who expect returns. We&#8217;ll be given insight into how the company plans to monetize its different products, and how they actually fare.</p>
<p>Just as Facebook knows so very much about each of us, we, too, will begin to learn a lot more about Facebook.</p>
<p>And yet, through all of this, no matter what grim forecast Wall Street projects, no matter what executive decisions or company road maps the media decries, Zuckerberg&#8217;s message is clear &#8212; so much so that he made it the poster for the <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/Photos-and-B-Roll/Poster-for-Hackathon-31-225.aspx">pre-IPO all-night hackathon</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Stay focused and keep hacking.&#8221;</p>
<p>Good luck with that.</p>

		<title>As Privacy Concerns Grow, More Social Media Users Are “Unfriending”</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As concerns about online privacy grow, users of social media sites are increasingly looking to unfriend other users and “prune” their personal profiles, according to a <a href="http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2012/Privacy-management-on-social-media.aspx">new report</a> out today from Pew Research Center. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/Unfriend.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/Unfriend-380x244.png" alt="" title="Unfriend" width="380" height="244" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-177614" /></a></p>
<p>More than 60 percent of social media users said last year that they deleted people from their friends lists, up from 56 percent in 2009; and 26 percent of users who keep their profiles private say they apply additional privacy settings to limit what some friends can see.</p>
<p>Profile “pruning” &#8212; deleting comments friends leave and untagging photos &#8212; is also on the rise, the report says.</p>
<p>Women are significantly more likely to keep their profiles private, and are more likely to unfriend people than men are, with 67 percent of women saying they’ve removed friends, compared with 58 percent of men. Young people are more likely to manage their social media presences by deleting comments and untagging photos.</p>
<p>Some 48 percent of social media users say they experience some level of difficulty managing privacy controls on their profiles &#8212; but 49 percent say the process is “not difficult” at all. A tiny sample of those surveyed say it&#8217;s “very difficult.”</p>
<p>The report highlights a divide between those who may care about privacy when it comes to social networks and those who seemingly do not. As Pew notes, it could be interpreted that avid users of social networks, who share lots of personal details, have abandoned any expectations of privacy, or are “uniquely unconcerned” about online privacy.</p>
<p>On the other side, Pew says, privacy advocates say the public still “cares deeply about their privacy online but those sensitivities have been ill-served by technology companies.”</p>
<p>The report comes just as the White House has moved to create a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203918304577241502216430274.html">privacy bill of rights,</a> aimed at governing online data tracking. One of the issues at hand is a “do not track” tool which Web companies like Google have just agreed to support. Last week, Google <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120220/microsoft-google-bypasses-privacy-settings-in-internet-explorer-too/">was reported </a>to be using deceptive practices to track Web users in certain browsers.</p>
<p>As The Wall Street Journal <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203918304577241502216430274.html">notes</a>, though, a “do not track” button would allow for some Web data collection &#8212; such as the data gathered through Facebook’s “Like” button.</p>
<p>Pew is careful not to point to Facebook directly throughout the report, but notes that Facebook is by far the most popular U.S. social network (in its recent S-1 filing, Facebook showed that its user base has ballooned to more than 845 million). Pew’s report says that the term “privacy settings” &#8212; as well as “unfriend” &#8212; are part and parcel of the Facebook experience.</p>
<p>The Pew survey on Internet usages was conducted between April and May of last year, and sampled more than 2,200 U.S. adults 18 and older. The survey found that two-thirds of U.S. Internet users had profiles on social networking sites, up from just 20 percent in 2006.</p>
<p>In terms of who was more likely to post things on social networks that they later admitted they regretted, males were almost twice as likely to do so, with 15 percent copping to it, than were females, at 8 percent. Young adults, age 18 to 29, were also more likely to post content that they’d later regret on social networks.</p>

<p>Facebook had 845 million monthly active users at the end of 2011, it <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1326801/000119312512034517/0001193125-12-034517-index.htm">said today</a> when it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120201/on-its-eighth-birthday-facebook-files-to-raise-5-billion-in-massive-ipo/">filed to go public</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/Facebookactiveusers.png"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-170475" title="Facebookactiveusers" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/Facebookactiveusers.png" alt="" width="318" height="191" /></a>That&#8217;s an increase of 39 percent from 608 million active users at the end of the previous year.</p>
<p>With $3.71 billion in revenue spread across 2011’s users, that gives a rough total of $4.39 in revenue per user per year.</p>
<p>Some 483 million Facebook users visited the service daily in December 2011, which was up 48 percent year over year.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a bunch of numbers to throw out at once, but you&#8217;ll note that Facebook daily user growth is outpacing monthly user growth &#8212; meaning the service is getting stickier.</p>
<p>In its early days, Facebook had given public user count milestones for at least every 50 million new users. In recent years those updates had stopped, with Facebook saying it wanted to focus more on engagement.</p>

<p>Today&#8217;s 845 million count is on track, but not necessarily ahead of projections based on Facebook&#8217;s previous public user count milestones. The last one was 800 million in September.</p>
<p>The chart pictured above comes from iCrossing, which recently <a href="http://connect.icrossing.co.uk/facebook-hit-billion-users-summer_7709">estimated</a> that Facebook would have one billion users as of August 2012 if current growth patterns continue.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Twitter has 100 million active monthly users and 400 million monthly visitors to its Web site, said CEO Dick Costolo, in a press conversation at Twitter&#8217;s San Francisco headquarters he called his &#8220;state of the union&#8221; on Thursday morning.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/dick-costolo-170x170.jpg"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/dick-costolo-170x170.jpg" alt="" title="Dick Costolo" width="170" height="170" class="alignright size-full wp-image-66063" /></a>Costolo said 40 percent of active users don&#8217;t create their own tweets, just read other people&#8217;s.</p>
<p>So that means many people read tweets but don&#8217;t create them, and in addition to that many more aren&#8217;t even logged in when they visit Twitter.com.</p>
<p>All these numbers are up significantly from the beginning of the year, Costolo said. In January, Twitter had just 250 million monthly visitors. Mobile usage seems to be a significant driver: 55 percent of active users access mobile Twitter products.</p>
<p>Costolo said his product goals are simplicity, tightening feedback loops, and surfacing content. But it&#8217;s a balance between maintaining the volume of the &#8220;roar of the crowd&#8221; as well as the most relevant and interesting bits, something he expects his product team to iterate on.</p>
<p>He said the reason Twitter hasn&#8217;t been forthcoming with these <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110314/twitter-numbers-cool-but-how-many-users-do-you-have/">long-anticipated stats</a> is because they would only be &#8220;partial,&#8221; and Twitter wanted to give a fuller story. And the reason the company hasn&#8217;t improved its products as much as people would have expected is because it had to get its infrastructure in order.</p>
<p>That infrastructure work is now done. So when a recent Sunday produced a record 8,900 tweets per second through the combination of buzzy topics like Hurricane Irene, a Manchester United win, Beyonce&#8217;s pregnancy announcement and other normal tweeting, Twitter didn&#8217;t even notice the record had been set until the next morning.</p>
<p>Costolo said Twitter has been careful to develop its business because &#8220;we didn&#8217;t want to do anything that optimized for near-term revenue at the expense of the experience.&#8221; But promoted tweets will now be syndicated to all platform products, he said.</p>
<p>He touted the ad products&#8217; engagement rates and mentioned a recent Virgin America campaign that with one tweet resulted in the airline&#8217;s fifth-largest sales day ever. He also said Twitter&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/twitter-confirms-funding-with-dst/">recent massive funding round</a> will keep it from worrying about IPO windows and the like.</p>
<p>Versus competition from Google+ and others, Costolo maintained that Twitter&#8217;s approach will be <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/liveblogging-twitters-dick-costolo-at-fortune-brainstorm-tech/">to differentiate through its simplicity</a>. &#8220;We&#8217;re thinking of Twitter as how can we simplify the product even further, what can we edit out,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Regarding the ongoing debate around whether users should be required to give their real names on social networks &#8212; which Twitter does not &#8212; Costolo said, &#8220;We&#8217;re not wedded to pseudonyms; we&#8217;re wedded to letting people use the service in the way they see fit.&#8221;</p>
<p>Costolo reiterated that he sees opportunities for Twitter ecosystem developers to focus on things like data mining rather than Twitter clients. &#8220;We don&#8217;t anticipate taking equity positions in Twitter ecosystem companies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But we will need the Buddy Media to Facebook, the Clickable to Google.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook has had two straight down months for active user growth, including unusual traffic drops during the month of May in markets where it has been available the longest, <a href="http://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/06/12/facebook-sees-big-traffic-drops-in-us-and-canada-as-it-nears-700-million-users-worldwide/">according to Inside Facebook Gold</a>.</p>
<p>The social networking service <a href="http://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/06/10/facebook-now-reaches-687-million-users-traffic-trends-and-data-at-inside-facebook-gold-june-2011-edition/">grew only 1.7 percent</a> in May, Inside Facebook said. While in a normal month Facebook adds 20 million active users globally, the service gained 11.8 million active users in May and 13.9 million in April.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-76452" href="http://allthingsd.com/20110531/more-than-friending-how-can-the-social-web-go-beyond-facebook/facebookworldmap/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-76452" title="Facebookworldmap" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/Facebookworldmap-380x189.png" alt="" width="380" height="189" /></a>Facebook is still growing overall, but its growth rate was dragged down by actual losses in some markets where Facebook has been around the longest, such as the U.S., Canada and the U.K.</p>
<p>For instance, the U.S. had 149.4 million active Facebook users at the end of May, down from 155.2 million at the beginning of the month, its first lost in the last year.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not a huge loss, and <a href="http://searchengineland.com/has-facebooks-active-user-growth-dropped-42036">not the</a> <a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/12/01/as-facebook-hits-350m-mark-growth-shows-signs-of-slowing/">first time</a> Facebook growth has appeared to waver, but no loss is good for a company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110106/even-if-it-had-500-shareholders-today-facebook-doesnt-have-to-disclose-financials-until-spring-of-2012/">close to going public</a>, and definitely not if it becomes a trend.</p>
<p>Inside Facebook draws its data from Facebook&#8217;s advertiser tools and analyzes selections from its premium reports on its public blog.</p>
<p>Facebook is still actively growing in its newer markets, and working on strategic expansion into holdout markets like <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110428/whats-really-going-on-with-facebooks-china-plans/">China (which obviously could be a gigantic and ethically problematic traffic boost)</a>, South Korea, Japan and Russia.</p>
<p>But slowing growth is keeping Facebook from reaching 700 million active users per month as quickly as might have been expected. The count at the end of May was 687 million, said Inside Facebook.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll add Facebook&#8217;s comment on the matter if it replies to our request.</p>
<p>To be clear, none of these stats count new user registrations. Rather, they&#8217;re the number of individual people, including both new and old users, who sign onto Facebook per month.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> The company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110613/facebook-kinda-disputes-slowdown-estimates-but-declines-to-give-actual-stats/">wimped out on actually disputing the reported numbers, but called them into question</a> in an official response.</p>

<p>What has Poland done for you lately?</p>
<p>Not much for me either.</p>
<p>But thanks to Marcin Treder, Kamil Zieba and Wictor Mazur, Poland can now add user experience (UX) design tools to its list of exports.</p>
<p>The three designers, who met at their day jobs working for one of Poland&#8217;s biggest e-commerce sites, founded UXPin&#8211;the quietly-famous Web site prototyping kit made of specially printed paper and sticky notes, beautifully bundled inside its own portable folder.</p>
<p>That description may not send everyone&#8217;s hands to their wallets, but over one thousand UXPin kits have shipped in the last three months, and many have been picked up by leading UX and graphic designers all over the world, including folks at BlackBerry, Google, Playboy, Sony Pictures and Yahoo.</p>
<p>And beginning Monday, fans of analog-first UX design can UXPin-up their iPhone app ideas with a new, mobile prototyping kit.</p>
<p>Thus, the prototyping solution they developed for their own jobs has mushroomed into a side business for Treder and his co-founders.</p>
<p>&#8220;We were really the original users we were designing for,&#8221; Treder said.</p>
<p>The team needed to rapidly prototype changes to their site&#8217;s price comparison pages and test the changes quickly.</p>
<p>After abandoning collaborative wire-framing software as either too slow or too technical for lay people to operate, they began printing wire-frame pieces and mixing them with Post-it-type notes to mock up designs.</p>
<p>&#8220;There was a lack of sophisticated tools,&#8221; said Treder. &#8220;We really needed to iterate quickly. With paper, everyone understands it, and everyone sits around a table, prototyping together.&#8221;</p>

<p>The paper kit fits with the digital to analog aesthetic that products like <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20101118/heres-how-that-50-apple-ipad-dodocase-is-made-plus-a-look-at-the-new-kindle-cover/">DODOCase</a> and <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100528/almost-famous-ben-zotto-of-cocoa-box-design/">Penultimate</a> have ridden to popularity.</p>
<p>UXPin blurs the line between the physical, tactile world and the other one we can only click through.</p>
<p>So, is this lo-fi direction for prototyping high-tech design a real movement, or just a fetish for the sort of folks that carry giant black sketchbooks wrapped in big rubber bands?</p>
<p>&#8220;Why spend 24 hours making a first mock-up in Photoshop when 90 percent of it may change the next day?,&#8221; Treder asked.</p>
<p>He thinks there are certain, undeniable benefits to prototyping Web designs on paper first.</p>
<p>He added that working with software alone also eliminates critical team bonding, and that paper prototyping not only gets you to the needed insights faster, but teaches the team members how to communicate and collaborate with each other during the very first stages of design.</p>
<p>Treder noted: &#8220;There is a lot of talk about communication problems between development and UX teams. Building a physical prototype together can really help with that.&#8221;</p>
<p>His argument is, in a sense, that paper can become a common language in the often nebulous design process.</p>
<p>It all sounded a little like grown-up make-believe, Treder argued that paper can also engage the user in the design more than software can.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone can move a sticky note.&#8221; he said. &#8220;Paper prototyping is like a physical version of sketching&#8211;but sketching has significant flaws. It&#8217;s not possible to move a line of pencil on the paper, or take it to another paper. With UXPin, this is possible.&#8221;</p>
<p>I captured a little Skype video of our conversation with Treder, and convinced him to give a little preview of the new mobile UXPin kit.</p>

<p>Both EMI and Spotify declined to comment.</p>
<p>Coupled with last month&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110119/one-down-spotify-signs-sony-to-us-deal/">Sony deal</a>, Spotify now  has the approval from two of the four major music labels for an American launch. But that still doesn&#8217;t guarantee <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110208/spotify-clears-its-throat-for-a-u-s-launch-in-coming-months/">you&#8217;ll see the streaming music subscription service in America</a> anytime soon.</p>
<p>In order to make a credible offer to U.S. users, Spotify will need to at least get Universal Music Group, the world&#8217;s biggest label, on board, and it&#8217;s not there yet.</p>
<p>It would also be nice if Spotify could land Warner Music Group, which now seems more doable than in the past, given <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110208/qotd-spotify-gets-a-pat-on-the-head-but-not-a-deal/">Warner CEO Edgar Bronfman&#8217;s increasingly positive comments</a> about the company.</p>
<p>If and/or when Spotify does come to the U.S., it will also have to contend with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110215/apple-rolls-out-long-awaitedfeared-subscription-plan/">new rules from Apple</a>, which will require a 30 percent cut of any subscriptions the service sells through Apple&#8217;s iTunes platform. That tariff is going to be a significant problem for many of Spotify&#8217;s peers, who are working on slim margins to begin with; I don&#8217;t know how Spotify plans to address this one.</p>

Here&#8217;s how it&#8217;s doing that: A hand-holding how-to video, which walks through everything from pricing to dealing with angry users.</p>
<p>The tutorial, which runs 40 minutes, is up on YouTube, but it&#8217;s unlisted and is only accessible via a private link. Thanks to a helpful reader, I&#8217;ve been able to watch it myself, and I&#8217;ve uploaded it at the bottom of this post so you can see it, too.</p>
<p>But it is 40 minutes long&#8211;and most of you don&#8217;t need to watch all of it. Here&#8217;s what you need to know if you&#8217;re interested in advertising, technology and Twitter&#8217;s first attempts at making real money:</p>
<p><strong>Promoted Tweets, Twitter&#8217;s first big ad product, hasn&#8217;t taken off.</strong><br />
Instead, at least for now, Twitter is pushing customers to spend most of their money on <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100927/exclusive-want-twitter-to-help-you-find-more-followers-pay-up-for-a-promoted-account/">Promoted Accounts</a>, its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110211/twitter-tells-advertisers-to-dig-deeper-promoted-trends-are-going-to-get-more-expensive/">pay-per-follower</a> product it rolled out at the end of last year. Twitter tells advertisers they ought to spend $4 on Promoted Accounts for every $1 they spend on Promoted Tweets&#8211;the original Google-style ad concept CEO Dick Costolo introduced last year. Twitter says that&#8217;s because it&#8217;s a lot easier to buy the former than the latter, because there&#8217;s a lot more inventory available. (And because Promoted Accounts will &#8220;turbocharge&#8221; Promoted Tweets.)</p>
<p><strong>Promoted Tweets should get a big push in the next month or so.</strong><br />
Until now, the only way you&#8217;re going to see a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100413/live-from-new-york-twitter-pitches-ads-to-madison-avene/">Promoted Tweet</a> is if you click on a search term that someone has purchased, or if you&#8217;re using Twitter app HootSuite. But Twitter says the ads will start running in users&#8217; regular &#8220;timelines&#8221;&#8211;the primary Twitterstream they see&#8211;on its own Twitter.com site, by the end of Q1. That&#8217;s going to make them much more visible, and should hopefully help with the inventory problem noted above.</p>
<p><strong>Twitter is telling customers to expect an &#8220;engagement rate&#8221; of 1 percent to 3 percent.</strong><br />
Ad buyers are usually trying to measure success by figuring out how many people looked at or clicked on an ad. Click-through rates for most Web ads are very tiny, and according to an ad buyer who has seen Twitter&#8217;s presentation, the company says a realistic click-through rate is 0.3 percent. But &#8220;engagement&#8221; rates&#8211;which measure when a user retweets an ad, or likes it, etc.&#8211;are supposed to be much higher. My tipster, by the way, says Twitter is requiring new ad buyers to make a purchase of at least $5,000 worth of inventory in order to participate in the company&#8217;s beta tests.</p>
<p><strong>Twitter is warning buyers that some users will have a problem with their ads.</strong><br />
At the end of the presentation (around the 35-minute mark), the company takes time out to coach buyers about &#8220;dealing with negative user feedback,&#8221; which it more or less assumes they&#8217;ll be getting. &#8220;People are averse to change, especially when it comes to advertising, and this type of feedback is to be expected,&#8221; Twitter&#8217;s off-screen instructor explains. The company&#8217;s suggested coping strategy: Don&#8217;t worry! The complainers are an &#8220;extremely marginal percentage of the total.&#8221;</p>

<p>HP CTO Phil McKinney says the company is working on bringing an integrated webOS experience to the PC.  &#8220;There&#8217;s a huge user base that still wants the [Windows] PC,&#8221; <a href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/technologybrierdudleysblog/2014222905_qa_hp_exec_on_webos_vs_microso.html">he told the Seattle Times.</a> &#8220;The key is that even on their PCs, people want to have it integrated with their devices. We have our PCs, you have your pads, you&#8217;ve got your phones. How do they work together? In today&#8217;s world they all act as individual information islands. What webOS does is bring all that together.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, HP isn&#8217;t dumping Windows, it&#8217;s enhancing it&#8211;at least for now. A wise move, since the former would be suicide at this point, even though it&#8217;s unclear how HP will pull it off. McKinney said the integration will not be done via virtualization, but rather through &#8220;a combination of taking the existing operating systems and bringing webOS onto those platforms and making it universal across all of our footprint.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/tweetdeck.com-logo-250x250.png"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-29816" title="tweetdeck.com-logo-250x250" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/tweetdeck.com-logo-250x250.png" alt="" width="250" height="250" /></a>On paper, Twitter is worth $4 billion. Its investors, at least, believe it will be worth $10 billion sooner than later.</p>
<p>So why is the leading Twitter application&#8211;the one that many of Twitter&#8217;s most ardent users rely on&#8211;selling itself for $30 million?</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the question lots of people are mulling over since Friday&#8217;s news about the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110211/tweetdeck-finds-a-home-and-30-million-at-ubermedia/">UberMedia/TweetDeck deal</a>.</p>
<p>The tech investors and observers I&#8217;ve chatted with in the last couple of days generally land in one of two camps. Either:</p>
<ul>
<li>TweetDeck is the biggest Twitter client not owned by Twitter, and they sold too early.</li>
<li>TweetDeck is the biggest Twitter client not owned by Twitter and, given the circumstances, they did okay.</li>
</ul>
<p>This is basically a more muted replay of last year&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100411/twitters-developer-conference-starts-early-with-a-group-therapy-session/">Twittersphere freakout</a>, when it became clear that Twitter wanted to own much more of the Twitter ecosystem itself, and would <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100524/we-sort-of-warned-you-twitter-boots-rival-ad-networks-from-its-stream/">place more limits</a> on <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100524/twitters-free-love-era-comes-to-an-end-time-for-developers-and-publishers-to-pay-up/">everyone else</a>.</p>
<p>One important variable here is the way you view Bill Gross and UberMedia. A big chunk of the TweetDeck payout&#8211;the majority, according to multiple sources&#8211;will be in UberMedia stock. So if you think that company&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110214/ubermedia-raises-17-5-million-from-accel-index-and-steve-case/">which just raised another $17.5 million itself</a>&#8211;has an upside, then the deal looks that much better.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s hard to figure, though, because Gross seems to be doing two things: Buying Twitter apps that compete with Twitter&#8217;s own products, and building a Twitter advertising system that will compete with the one Twitter is trying to build itself.</p>
<p>And Twitter doesn&#8217;t seem any more receptive to any of that now than it did 10 months ago. But Gross and his backers argue that they&#8217;re going to pull it off in a way that makes Uber become the Zynga to Twitter&#8217;s Facebook&#8211;a smaller company built on another bigger company&#8217;s platform, that makes both of them more valuable. So if they&#8217;re right&#8230;</p>
<p>Meantime, this seems like a good time to revisit Twitter investor Fred Wilson&#8217;s &#8220;inflection point&#8221; essay from last April.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the one that precipitated much quaking among third-party Twitter developers and investors, with good reason: In part, it explained that <a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/04/the-twitter-platform.html">Twitter would be buying or building &#8220;hole-filling&#8221; services</a>, which meant there wouldn&#8217;t be much reason for many of the Twittersphere&#8217;s existing apps to exist.</p>
<p>A year later, though, it&#8217;s the second part of Wilson&#8217;s essay, where he calls on developers to build new apps and services that &#8220;create something entirely new on top of Twitter,&#8221; that seems more striking.</p>
<p>Because if Twitter really does end up being worth $10 billion or more, it seems like someone ought to be trying to do that. I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;ve seen any, though.</p>

<p>Huffington Post contributors <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/02/unpaid_huffington_post_blogger.html">griping</a> in the wake of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash/">the site&#8217;s sale to AOL</a>? Sure. But it&#8217;s also the same gripe that AOL users made in the dial-up era.</p>
<p>And&#8211;pay attention, angry bloggers&#8211;some of those AOL users eventually got paid!</p>
<p>The bad news: They had to go to court to get their cash, via a class action suit they filed in 1999. And they didn&#8217;t see a check until last year.</p>
<p>As the <a href="http://www.cjr.org/the_news_frontier/aol_settled_with_unpaid_volunt.php">Columbia Journalism Review</a> reminds us, the old, pre-Time Warner AOL used to rely on an army of volunteers&#8211;&#8221;community leaders&#8221;&#8211;to do essential gruntwork like moderating chatrooms. Wired called it a &#8220;<a href="http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/7.10/volunteers.html">cyber-sweatshop.</a>&#8220;</p>
<p>And while it took a decade, the plaintiffs in the AOL case did end up with something for their trouble&#8211;a $15 million settlement, handed out last year.</p>
<p>Of course, 30 percent of that&#8211;$4.5 million&#8211;went to the lawyers, court documents show. But that&#8217;s still $10.5 million divvied up among a couple of thousand <a href="http://hubpages.com/hub/AOL-Settlement-Check-Arrives-Man-Lands-on-Mars">former chatroom monitors</a>. You can&#8217;t retire on that, but you could buy a few <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_air?aid=AIC-WWW-NAUS-K2-BUYNOW-MACBOOKAIR">MacBook Airs</a>.</p>
<p>So could HuffPo&#8217;s angry bloggers get something for their troubles? Seems like a tough case to make: One big difference between AOL&#8217;s unpaid workers and HuffPo&#8217;s unpaid writers is that AOL really did treat its workers like workers.</p>
<p>It recruited them through <a href="http://www.forbes.com/asap/2001/0219/070.html">want ads</a>, held them to time commitments and compensated them with benefits like free or discounted dial-up access. (Remember that?)</p>
<p>HuffPo&#8217;s writers, on the other hand, simply handed the site some copy, which it ran&#8211;just like the people who submit op-ed pieces to newspapers. And I never hear about them demanding cash for their work. It seems quite clear that the trade is your words/their distribution.</p>
<p>Still, you never know! And I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s at least one attorney, somewhere, who&#8217;s ready to try it out. Let&#8217;s check back in a decade and see how it panned out.</p>

Now the company wants to wring more money out of them: It has told buyers to expect a significant price bump for the ads in the next few months.</p>
<p>Twitter doesn&#8217;t have a formal rate card, but ad industry sources say the going price for a one-day promoted trends purchase has settled between $70,000 and $80,000, after starting out as high as $100,000 a day.</p>
<p>Now Twitter has started telling buyers the coming price hike will consistently push the ads into the $100,000 to $120,000 range.</p>
<p>Promoted trends give an advertiser a chance to essentially purchase a small sliver of Twitter&#8217;s site, by inserting their message at the top of the &#8220;trends&#8221; section of users&#8217; pages. For now, Twitter sells only one per day, and has been selling the slot out with some frequency.</p>
<p>And promoted trends could become even more valuable for Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and his company if they start carving the ads up into different geographies, giving them the ability to sell more than one per day.</p>
<p>If, say, Twitter could sell at least two different promoted trends, in two different territories each week, at $100,000 a pop, those ads alone could generate $20.8 million a year. Play around with those assumptions, and you can quite easily bite off a big chunk of the $100 million-plus ad revenue estimates we&#8217;ve seen floated.</p>
<p>Ad buyers also tell me Twitter has been bullish about its &#8220;<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100927/exclusive-want-twitter-to-help-you-find-more-followers-pay-up-for-a-promoted-account/">Promoted Accounts</a>&#8221; product, which it rolled out toward the end of last year.</p>
<p>When <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100709/exclusive-want-more-followers-twitter-may-help-you-buy-some/">I first wrote about the concept last summer</a>, and described it as a way to let marketers (or anyone) &#8220;buy&#8221; followers, the concept upset some Twitter traditionalists.</p>
<p>But they&#8217;re going to have to get over it, because it&#8217;s exactly what Twitter is selling: It prices the ads, which show up on users &#8220;Who to follow&#8221; list, on a &#8220;cost per follow&#8221; basis. Buyers pay between $1 to $3 for every new account that follows them.</p>
<p>The one Twitter ad product I haven&#8217;t heard buyers talk that much about is the first one Twitter rolled out. &#8220;Promoted Tweets&#8221; were supposed to work like Google&#8217;s AdWords&#8211;&#8221;organic&#8221; tweets, tied to keywords, that showed up in search results, and later in users&#8217; regular streams.</p>
<p>That seemed like a promising tactic at first. But I&#8217;ve never seen a promoted tweet &#8220;in the wild&#8221;; the only time I&#8217;ve seen them is when they&#8217;re attached to the promoted trends.</p>

<p>After he was appointed the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110209/bing-overlord-satya-nadella-promoted-to-president-of-server-and-tools-at-microsoft/">new president of Microsoft&#8217;s important Server and Tools Division</a> from his top engineering post at its come-from-behind Bing search unit, Satya Nadella now finds himself a leader of a business that also needs to keep catching up.</p>
<p>In a wide-ranging interview with BoomTown yesterday, Nadella talked about both his four-year stint at Bing and how he looked forward to the challenges of his new job.</p>
<p>Nadella got the nod, he said, after CEO Steve Ballmer went through a process of what was Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;position in this business and a certain set [of ideas] about who should come in next.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, almost 20 years earlier, after working at Sun Microsystems, Nadella had started in the same area of Microsoft he will now lead.</p>
<p>Quoting the famous T.S. Eliot lines&#8211;&#8221;We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time&#8221;&#8211;Nadella was an evangelist for Windows NT.</p>
<p>Eventually, his career brought him to the search arena, most recently to the most aggressive and expensive effort yet by Microsoft with Bing to try to eat into the massive and lucrative lead of Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those were fairly dark days for us,&#8221; noted Nadella, pointing out that any market share gains by Microsoft seemed impossible.</p>
<p>But, according to numerous surveys, it has been only uphill for Bing, especially after it started to really spend and also inked its search and online advertising deal with Yahoo, a partnership that Nadella was a key player in striking.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have, depending on which one you look at, grown five share points,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But behind that, I am most proud of launching a brand and a product that is delivering.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of the recent controversy in which Google accused Bing of lifting its results, Nadella borrows another quote, this time from Gandhi.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8216;First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win,&#8217;&#8221; he said, noting Bing has always said it uses toolbar and other public user data. &#8220;The real debate is whether we are better.&#8221;</p>
<p>In any case, as Nadella sees it, the Bing experience has helped him prepare for his new job, noting he was in charge of building a 200,000-machine grid to serve the various online services at Microsoft.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have been CIO of a cloud platform where there are only two of that size,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, I know what it is like to be a customer of those services.&#8221;</p>
<p>His hope for his next job, he said, is to make it the next-generation cloud platform, while also serving the needs of current customers with its current product.</p>
<p>&#8216;We have a product and brand that are really foundational, but there is a threshold to it,&#8221; Nadella said. &#8220;We have to serve the needs of our existing customers, while also moving them to the cloud and building a next-generation offering.&#8221;</p>
<p>At Bing, he said, &#8220;every day is upside, since we came from so far behind, whereas in server and tools, we are the leader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Big competitors are different and the same too, when it comes to the cloud.</p>
<p>&#8220;Amazon has done a good job, but not in the same game as us,&#8221; said Nadella, ticking off Google, Oracle and VMware as rivals in different ways too. &#8220;It&#8217;s a nascent marketplace.&#8221;</p>
<p>Acquisitions, he said, will also be important. &#8220;We are always looking at what opportunities there are,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>His overall view?</p>
<p>&#8220;I think that the challenge is how to operate in a space where we have a $15-plus-billion-dollar business and we know the paradigm is shifting and managing that shift where we are the disruptors and also the leaders at the same time.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, between a rock and a hard place, a place Nadella knows well from Bing.</p>
<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t be stuck in current paradigm,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And we can&#8217;t shoot too far ahead of ourselves either.&#8221;</p>

Truly suit your needs? Because if it doesn&#8217;t, you&#8217;re potentially wasting hundreds of dollars.  According to a yearlong BillShrink survey of more than 230,000  wireless users, people waste an average of $336 annually by miscalculating their voice and data needs. And in doing so, they unnecessarily hand an estimated $79 million to their carriers.</p>
<p>A few key findings from<a href="http://www.billshrink.com/blog/10973/cell-phone-plans-comparison-2/"> the survey</a>:</p>
<ul>
<li> People estimate they need 711 wireless anytime minutes per month, but in truth they need quite a bit less. BillShrink found 651 minutes to be the average.</li>
<li> The average person uses 1,555 text messages per month, yet most consumers believe they use 2,566. (1,555 per-month is the <em>average</em>!?!)</li>
<li> People assume they need 54MB of data per month, yet most need 81MB. Ironically, most tiered carrier plans start at 150MB.</li>
</ul>
<p>What&#8217;s driving these disparities? Consumers&#8217; skewed perception of their wireless needs, obviously. But the carriers are to blame too. Their tiered pricing plans might offer more choice, but they also make it tougher to assess our voice, text and data needs, and make it quite a bit easier to overpay for them.<br />

<p>Netflix&#8217;s dramatic growth in user base and market cap have had a lot to do with the company anticipating market changes and making audacious bets, but it has been relatively plodding and hesitant about getting social.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2864" title="thumb-netflix-ipad-ui" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/thumb-netflix-ipad-ui-e1296110042941-150x150.gif" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Netflix explained in the <a href="http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/NFLX/1145005059x0x437075/925e81c4-3d5d-44b6-ae5e-a70c91251131/Q410%2520Letter%2520to%2520shareholders.pdf">shareholder letter (PDF)</a> accompanying its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110126/netflix-takes-aim-at-the-cable-guys-with-a-promise-to-start-firing-tomorrow/">quarterly earnings report</a> that its Facebook integration will accompany an effort to split household accounts into multiple personal accounts.</p>
<p>In part because of the company&#8217;s history as a DVD mailing service, a Netflix account is affiliated with a particular address. That&#8217;s also the way traditional television providers measure their market: In terms of households.</p>
<p>But online video, Netflix notes, &#8220;is more naturally individual, since it is watched on personal screens like phones, tablets, and laptops, as well as on shared large screen televisions.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition to helping identify discrete people within a household, Facebook integration would presumably allow Netflix to help users do things like share their personal viewing history in their newsfeed and recommend videos to friends. Understanding social networks could improve Netflix&#8217;s famously honed recommendation algorithm. It might also be an opportunity for Netflix to create social viewing experiences.</p>
<p>Currently, Netflix lacks much in the way of social features; it had <a href="http://blogs.investors.com/click/index.php/home/60-tech/1973-netflix-ends-its-social-networking-experiment">yanked a previous effort to offer social sharing</a> last year after saying that relatively few subscribers used it.</p>
<p>However, the company has recently staffed up for a renewed social effort.</p>
<p>Mike Hart, previously Netflix&#8217;s director of engineering for APIs, is now director of engineering for social. Hart <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/1700368/netflix-social-media-zuckerberg-facebook">told Fast Company in November</a> that Netflix sees social as an international user acquisition strategy and an opportunity to avoid disruption by a competitor that is more social.</p>
<p>Netflix also appears to view personal accounts as an opportunity to charge more money. The company said in the shareholder letter that later this year it will start offering new account options that include multiple simultaneous streams. (So, for instance, you could stream TV episodes in the bedroom on your iPad while your spouse watches a movie in the living room through the Roku.) The streaming-only plan Netflix recently launched costs $7.99 (which some industry watchers say is too cheap) and allows just one stream at a time.</p>
<p>Netflix noted in the letter that its new grand internal vision is to target the number of active mobile phones in an area, rather than the number of households (though that might be a bit ambitious in places where it&#8217;s common for people to have more than one phone!).</p>

Cue <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20071121/facebook-vs-moveon/">uproar</a>, and an eventual <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20071205/fiascobook-redux/">apology</a> from Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>Yesterday Facebook unveiled a plan to let brands turn Facebook users&#8217; online activities into ads. If anyone is complaining, <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=sponsored+stories&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a">it&#8217;s news to me</a>.</p>
<p>Easy enough to see why: There are some very big differences between Facebook&#8217;s ill-fated Beacon and Sponsored Stories, the site&#8217;s new ad unit.</p>
<p>For starters, Facebook unveiled yesterday&#8217;s news in the <a href="http://www.adweek.com/aw/content_display/news/digital/e3i48e8837b4923e4932c16cb45eae0e338">trade</a> <a href="http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=148452">press</a>, not in a high-profile, Apple-aping event. More important is that while the new ads can tell your friends what you&#8217;re doing outside of Facebook, they&#8217;re mainly focused, for now, on what you do on the site.</p>
<p>Most important: The ads are replicas of the updates your friends are <em>already seeing</em> in their Facebook newsfeeds. So while Starbucks doesn&#8217;t pay a cent when this shows up on on the center of your friends&#8217; pages:</p>

<p>It can now pay up and place this on the right side of your pals&#8217; pages, too.</p>
<p><a rel="lightbox" href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Starbucks-Sponsored-Story.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28588" title="Starbucks Sponsored Story" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Starbucks-Sponsored-Story.png" alt="" width="259" height="184" /></a></p>
<p>Users can&#8217;t opt out of the ads, which seems like a red flag given <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100524/mark-zuckebergs-non-apology-facebooks-privacy-policy-missed-the-mark-but-not/">Facebook&#8217;s history</a>. But if a brand wants to shell out money to tell your friends something you&#8217;ve already told your friends, who cares? No one, apparently.</p>
<p>Still, recall what <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20071108/facebook-unveils-social-class-actions/">Zuckerberg was saying</a> less than four years ago, when he was going to &#8220;build a new kind of ad system&#8221; based on &#8220;social actions&#8221; and &#8220;information that is shared between friends.&#8221; At the time, that sounded wildly ambitious, and maybe a bit creepy.</p>
<p>And look what Sponsored Stories does now. Marketers can purchase ads that tell your Facebook friends when you&#8217;ve &#8220;liked&#8221; something of theirs. Or posted on one of their Facebook pages. Or checked-in to one of their outposts or played with one of their apps.</p>
<p>And they can do it when you&#8217;re not on Facebook, too, via &#8220;likes&#8221; you make on sites that have tied up with the social network.</p>
<p>This is what Zuckerberg was talking about in 2007, right? He just needed time to get there. So did his users.</p>
<p>Remember that when Facebook rolled out Beacon, the site was a big deal, but not the biggest: A mere 50 million users, not <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101230/does-facebook-have-600-million-users-yet/">600 million</a>. Many of those people were still trying to get a handle on how the site worked, and what they ought to do with it.</p>
<p>And recall that the newsfeed itself&#8211;more or less the core of today&#8217;s service&#8211;was still a relatively new idea too, introduced just a year earlier. (Another controversy, and another Zuckerberg <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=2208562130">apology</a>.)</p>
<p>Now, I think, just about everyone who uses Facebook knows, more or less, what they&#8217;ve signed on for: A place that wants you to share as much of yourself, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090701/facebooks-new-privacy-policy-share-everything-with-everyone/">with as many people</a>, as you can.</p>
<p>Letting advertisers help you share that much more? No big deal. This is isn&#8217;t 2007, you know.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook is testing a new feature called Buy With Friends to give users social incentives to increase their purchases of virtual goods from games on its platform, said Deb Liu, Facebook commerce product marketing manager, at the Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco today.</p>
<p>The program will encourage users to purchase virtual goods that their friends have already bought.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/FacebookCredits.png" alt="" title="FacebookCredits" width="119" height="121" class="alignright size-full wp-image-2772" />Speaking to an audience of application developers who are concerned about Facebook&#8217;s move to<a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110124/facebook-credits-will-be-mandatory-payment-platform-starting-july-1/"> require developers to use its Facebook Credits virtual currency system</a>, Liu mentioned Buy With Friends as an example of a program Facebook is providing that will help developers make more money.</p>
<p>Liu said Buy With Friends gives developers tools to help users share their in-game purchases. In testing so far, she said &#8220;more than 50 percent of users elected to share a purchase.&#8221; As an example, after a friend has made and shared a purchase, a player might see a message that says, &#8220;Your friend has unlocked this deal for you&#8211;get 40 percent off this special monster food,&#8221; Liu said.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve argued in the past that <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101229/web-commerce-isnt-really-social-yet/">much of what we call &#8220;social commerce&#8221; isn&#8217;t very social yet</a>, but this seems like an example of a product that actually deserves that label.</p>
<p>Facebook is also offering incentives, including promotion and premium ad targeting, to developers who use Facebook Credits as their in-game currency.</p>
<p>Facebook Credits are used by some 150 developers, but many of them elect to also use their own branded currency so as not to be locked into the Facebook system. This introduces a silly amount of complexity, with users often having to convert their real-world money into Facebook Credits into in-game currency, all at different exchange rates.</p>
<p>Liu also said that Facebook is testing a feature that improves users&#8217; ability to purchase additional credits without leaving the game environment.</p>

<p>Taylor said Facebook will emphasize HTML5 development in order to have maximum impact across fragmented mobile platforms for both his company and those who build on the Facebook platform.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2753" title="photo-1" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/photo-1-e1295981540351-275x206.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="206"/><br />
HTML5&#8211;which is the new browser standard that gives Web applications capabilities on par with native applications&#8211;Taylor said, &#8220;might be a little ahead of that curve, but that&#8217;s where we&#8217;re putting a huge amount of investment in the next year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Already, said Taylor, 125 million of Facebook&#8217;s 200 million-plus mobile users are using HTML5-capable devices like the iPhone and Android.</p>
<p>Even so, when Facebook introduces a new feature, it has to implement it across seven different versions: facebook.com, m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, its iPhone app, Android app, BlackBerry app and <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110119/facebooks-mobile-strategy-its-all-about-global-growth/">custom integrations for other handset OSs</a>.</p>
<p>Facebook wants to reduce that friction for its own sake and its developers&#8217; as well. The company&#8217;s first step toward this goal was its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101103/liveblogging-the-facebook-mobile-event-single-sign-on/">single sign-on for mobile apps</a> introduced last year, which has already had significant impact on developers like Flixster, Taylor said.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s HTML5 push brings it into step with Google, which has put a major emphasis on Web apps despite its own Android mobile OS. But even so, the two companies have had major success with native apps, when they&#8217;ve chosen to build them. Facebook has the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/8278380/Apple-The-10-most-popular-free-and-paid-apps.html">No. 1 free iPhone app of all time,</a> while Google Mobile for iPhone is No. 3. (Coming in second is Pandora&#8217;s streaming radio.)</p>
<p>&#8220;Mobile devices are inherently social,&#8221; said Taylor, noting that he feels that the combination of mobile, social and location will be an especially fruitful area for products like Facebook Places and Foursquare.</p>
<p>Taylor said Facebook is likely to create its own &#8220;high-quality location database&#8221;&#8211;which would compete with start-ups like SimpleGeo&#8211;though it&#8217;s not something the company has specific plans for yet.</p>
<p>Addressing start-ups wary of Facebook competing with their products by making them a part of its platform, Taylor said, &#8220;Our philosophy has always been to build products into Facebook that are generally useful, which is why we built location into the platform. We felt like it would have a really big impact for developers if they could all leverage a common location infrastructure.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s platform focus in 2010 was about improving user experience, Taylor said, and he considers that effort a success. He said Facebook reduced spam (a.k.a. unwanted posts about games like FarmVille and other applications) by 95 percent last year through policy simplifications.</p>
<p>Though it shut down ways for applications to recruit users, it wasn&#8217;t like Facebook prevented games from growing, said Taylor, citing the <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101224/in-less-than-one-month-cityville-beats-farmville-to-become-zyngas-biggest-game/">fantastic ascent of Zynga&#8217;s CityVille</a>, which grew to 100 million users in 40 days, compared with the four years it took Facebook itself to reach that number.</p>

Extrapolating from a post-CES consumer survey, RBC* analyst Mike Abramsky concludes the device could sell four million units this calendar year and in excess of six million units in its first full year at market.</p>
<p>“The data shows PlayBook appealing to early adopters and power users, given its differentiation from iPad,” Abramsky told clients, noting that six percent of the survey group said they were &#8220;likely&#8221; to buy a PlayBook.  Of those, one percent were &#8220;very likely&#8221; and the remaining five percent &#8220;somewhat likely.&#8221;<br />
<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/pbRBC.jpg"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/pbRBC-380x188.jpg" alt="" title="pbRBC" width="380" height="188" class="aligncenter size-Medium380 wp-image-56323" /></a><br />
So six percent of respondents are very/somewhat likely to buy the PlayBook once it becomes available. That&#8217;s about half the level of interest expressed in a similar survey of iPad-buying intentions ahead of that device&#8217;s debut last year. And <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110120/with-ipad-sales-steve-schools-the-street-again/">Apple ended up selling 14.8 million iPads in 2010</a>, far beyond analyst consensus estimates of  3.3 million. So Abramsky four- to six-million forecast might not be that far off&#8211;assuming the PlayBook proves to be all that RIM claims.</p>
<p>That said, the tablet market today is very different than it was prior to the iPad&#8217;s debut. And with the legion of new tablets headed to market, including the iPad 2, Abramsky&#8217;s forecast could prove optimistic. Remember, despite the leverage of RIM&#8217;s installed base and the promise of the BlackBerry&#8217;s security and manageability, the PlayBook is still missing some of the platform elements that have made the iPad so successful&#8211;a thriving apps ecosystem, a vertically integrated platform and iTunes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week the year-old start-up PostUp, formerly known as TweetUp, renamed itself <a href="http://ubermedia.com/">UberMedia</a>. So much for worrying about brand recognition!</p>
<p>The Pasadena, Calif.-based company also acquired the independently developed BlackBerry application UberTwitter, adding to its acquisition of Echofon (the Twitter client for iPhone and other Mac devices) at the beginning of the month and Twidroyd (Twitter for Android) in September. <strong>Update</strong>: <em>On Monday UberMedia <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110124006574/en/UberMedia-Acquires-Mixx.com-Plans-Add-Company’s-Content">said</a> it had acquired an additional company, <a href="http://www.mixx.com/">Mixx</a>, the former competitor to Digg that now curates social media channels for brands.</em></p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2624" title="JonKraft" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/JonKraft-275x123.png" alt="" width="220" height="98" />UberMedia, despite its seemingly perpetual identity crisis, has particular notoriety because its founder and CEO, Bill Gross, first popularized paid search advertising with his company GoTo.com in the late &#8217;90s. When Gross first <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100411/paid-search-inventor-bill-gross-moves-to-monetize-tweets-with-tweetup-and-without-twitter/">launched the company last April</a>, he said he&#8217;d do the same thing for Twitter.</p>
<p>Since then, Twitter has <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100412/as-promised-here-come-the-twitter-ads/">launched its own ad system</a> and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100524/we-sort-of-warned-you-twitter-boots-rival-ad-networks-from-its-stream/?mod=ATD_rss">tightened up on permissions</a> for rival ad networks.</p>
<p>UberMedia has let its Twitter account recommendation widgets languish, but says they will be relaunched soon as a new product called FollowMe. Meanwhile, the Twitter clients the company has acquired have a combined three million active users. They are some of the leading independent options, despite somewhat precarious positioning now that Twitter has launched its own official clients for most every platform.</p>
<p>Gross is traveling in Europe this week, but UberMedia COO <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/jonkraft1">Jon Kraft</a> got on the phone with NetworkEffect over the weekend to say that there is indeed a method behind all this name-changing and client-acquiring madness. Here&#8217;s an edited transcript:</p>
<p><strong>NetworkEffect: Why the name UberMedia?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Kraft: Obviously we&#8217;re very excited about the acquisition of UberTwitter, and we felt like our mission had expanded a bit since we first launched. It was really all about this paid search platform, and PostUp was a great name&#8230;.</p>
<p><strong>And before that you had another name, TweetUp.</strong></p>
<p>Yes, but as we started to grow our business on the client side, we saw ourselves increasingly as a media company. We&#8217;re not crazy about the fact that we&#8217;ve changed our name twice now, but hopefully we&#8217;ll build a company around that brand.</p>
<p><strong>How did this acquisition strategy come about? </strong></p>
<p>We first bought Twidroyd seven months ago, and we really loved what we learned about the way consumers use Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>What is the involvement of the founders of the companies you bought? Are they all running their respective apps?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Obviously a big part of what makes those companies exciting is the passion of the founders, so we encourage them to operate fairly independently.</p>
<p><strong>Who is the staff of UberMedia?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>We have some business development to create partnerships, but the vast majority is engineers. We have a little over 40 employees as a distributed team.</p>
<p><strong>And what&#8217;s happened to the sponsored Twitter accounts and tweets?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;re still very excited about what we&#8217;re doing with the marketplace, but there are a number of other innovations that we&#8217;re planning. The bigger vision is to innovate inside the Twitter ecosystem.</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2629" title="UberMedia" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/UberMedia-275x76.png" alt="" width="193" height="53" />What does that mean in the context of Twitter competing within its ecosystem, especially through Twitter clients? That doesn&#8217;t seem like a category other start-ups and investors are investing in as much today.</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not easy to organically grow a new Twitter client from scratch, it&#8217;s a real challenge. But I think the Twitter platform is still greatly under-leveraged, and there&#8217;s surprisingly low penetration of Twitter users today.</p>
<p><strong>But it&#8217;s not as if Twitter allows application makers to just make whatever money they want on its platform.</strong></p>
<p>Twitter has been understandably conservative about wanting to protect the user experience across their platform, so we&#8217;re being conservative as well and thinking of other ways to innovate and monetize.</p>
<p><strong>What is your company&#8217;s relationship with Twitter?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a great relationship. I can&#8217;t talk details about what we&#8217;re discussing, but the relationship is quite good.</p>
<p><strong>Are you raising more funding? [UberMedia, which launched out of Gross's Idealab, had previously raised $3.5 million from Index Ventures, Betaworks, Revolution, First Round Capital and others.]</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;re not talking about our funding right now, but obviously you have to raise money in order to grow aggressively.</p>
<p><strong>Will you keep acquiring? It seems like you have Twitter clients for most of the major platforms now.</strong></p>
<p>It is possible, but not top of our priority list.</p>
<p><strong>One things you have not had is a problem with agility.</strong></p>
<p>That&#8217;s a concise way to put it.</p>
<p><strong>What about Bill Grosss involvement? Is he still CEO or is he doing other Idealab stuff?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Absolutely. He&#8217;s head-down 100 percent on this project.</p>

This week, I took a look at Quora, a question-and-answer site that encourages thoughtful—even long-winded—discussions.</p>

<p>Quora (Quora.com) was launched about six months ago by two former Facebook employees who wanted to create a forum where in-depth questions could be posed and answered. Users vote answers up or down according to how good they are, the idea being that the best answers get pushed to the top of the queue by the community of users. Few of these questions can be answered with a simple yes or no. For example, one question asks, &#8220;What role did social media play with regards to the revolution in Tunisia?&#8221; (See here for the answer with the most votes: <a href="http://www.quora.com/Journalism/What-role-did-social-media-play-with-regards-to-the-revolution-in-Tunisia">http://3.ly/8Gqf</a>.) </p>
<p>One thing to be wary of: There&#8217;s nothing that qualifies the most popular answers as accurate, nor do people who write the most popular answers necessarily qualify as experts. This could lead to confusion or even danger, like medical questions that are answered incorrectly. Quora users are required to register their real email addresses, and some answers are more believable than others according to who answers, like the CEO of Netflix answering a question this past fall about how much the company spends on postage per year (answer: between $500 million and $600 million). </p>
<p>As soon I signed up for Quora by submitting an email and password, I walked through steps to &#8220;follow&#8221; certain topics that interest me—like technology, journalism, media and news—so whenever those topics are discussed, the related questions and answers appear on my Quora home page. I also linked my Twitter and Facebook accounts to my Quora account, which clued Quora in on some topics or people that might interest me according to the information in those accounts. Once these accounts are linked, it&#8217;s a lot easier to share Quora questions or answers with people on Twitter and Facebook. </p>
<p>People, like topics, can be followed. If someone I follow posts a question, answers a question or votes an answer up or down, this activity appears on my Quora home page. </p>
<p>Though Quora may sound simple, I found it uninviting, geeky and poorly explained. The site lacks instructions on how to use it;  people just have to figure it out as they go. For example, a newcomer might not know that Quora answers can be voted up or down by seeing two tiny triangles that appear beside each answer. If I select the up triangle, this indicates I voted for that answer, and news of this vote is shared on the Quora home page of anyone who follows me. A number beside each answer indicates how many votes it has received so far. But unless you&#8217;ve used the site for a while, you wouldn&#8217;t know any of this. </p>
<p>After a few weeks of use, I found I preferred using Quora less for asking my own questions and more for reading other people&#8217;s questions and answers about topics I liked. I occasionally voted on answers to show whether I supported them or not. One user asked me a direct question, which I answered. I asked a question of the Quora community, but no one replied. </p>
<p>I found Quora&#8217;s questions and answers to be rather smart and entertaining. Its Silicon Valley roots are evident in its numerous technology-related questions and answers. I typed &#8220;tennis&#8221; into a box at the top of the screen and one of the first questions that surfaced was &#8220;Is tennis popular in Silicon Valley?&#8221; Instead of that question, I selected &#8220;What is the history of tennis&#8217;s strange scoring system?&#8221; and read the answer with the most votes, which seemed right to the best of my knowledge. Interestingly enough, this answer also included a link to a related article on Wikipedia. </p>

<p>But compared with the rest of the Web, where images, videos, animations and sound entertain website visitors, Quora&#8217;s text-filled pages can come off feeling a bit like textbook reading assignments. This is because all but a handful of questions are answered with just text. Video isn&#8217;t enabled on the site, though founder Charlie Cheever told me that this might be possible in the future. </p>
<p>Another problem with Quora is that most people who use the Internet are conditioned to rely on search engines like Google, Bing or Wikipedia for queries, typing the right key words to get the intended results. And people are often searching for quick answers that take just a couple seconds to read. </p>
<p>Plenty of other question-and-answer forums exist, like Yahoo Answers, which has been around since 2005, ChaCha.com and Ask.com. Facebook introduced Facebook Questions to a small number of its users over the summer, but when asked, a company spokeswoman wouldn&#8217;t say whether or not this offering would be available to all users anytime soon, if at all. </p>
<p>Quora&#8217;s combination of social networking (following topics and people) and in-depth answers helps differentiate it from those services.</p>
<p>Private messages can be sent from one user to another through Quora, and new messages are indicated with a red number that appears over your personal &#8220;Inbox&#8221; at the top of the Quora site. Likewise, when new notifications appear on the home page, a red number is shown above Home at the top of the page. This home page can be viewed in one of three views: Your Feed, All Changes or Followed Questions; users can toggle between these views.</p>
<p>Only people who have created accounts can browse the Quora.com site, though links to content can be opened by anyone. This differs from Twitter.com, which can be visited and searched by anyone regardless of whether or not they have a Twitter account. Quora also lacks one central home page where everyone can go to see every Quora question and answer, or which answer received the most votes on the entire site. Mr. Cheever told me that the site deliberately tries to keep your world small so you can focus on the topics or people you follow. </p>
<p>Quora relies on its community members to police one another, like Wikipedia, and less than 100 users are also granted administrator privileges to do more serious operations like deleting answers that use hate speech or other offensive remarks, which aren&#8217;t permitted according to the site&#8217;s policies. Every edit made to an answer is logged in the Quora system for everyone to see. This helps users understand an entry&#8217;s history on Quora. </p>
<p>This site doesn&#8217;t put much emphasis on interaction with others, though you are notified whenever someone follows you and you may be prompted to suggest topics for someone who starts following you. Like Facebook and Twitter, a list of users who you might want to follow is suggested in Quora.</p>
<p>For now, Quora feels like a website designed for techie insiders without instructions for mainstream users. But its smart community, intriguing questions and way of showing users just the content they want to follow will keep people coming back to the site. With a lot of polishing, Quora could be a social network people use every day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Picplz is adding a few more tricks to its camera bag.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://picplz.com/">social mobile photo venture</a> is updating its iPhone application on Thursday to allow for, among other things, the ability to get a live preview of what various filters will look like before applying them. It&#8217;s the second major update to the iPhone version, following on the addition of filters a couple of months back.<br />

In an interview, Picplz creator Dalton Caldwell said the company also did a lot of work to make the program faster and more responsive.</p>
<p>&#8220;We got a lot of feedback about just the look and feel of the product and how it felt sluggish to browse around so we made what I consider to be some pretty big changes and we rewrote quite a bit of the [user interface],&#8221; Caldwell told Mobilized. </p>
<p>Live preview of filters, Caldwell said, just makes Picplz more enjoyable. &#8220;These apps are fun,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Being able to really quickly scan through and see it through a bunch of different lenses is fun.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it&#8217;s fun for the users, Picplz is also <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101213/video-picplzs-dalton-caldwell-says-its-all-about-the-money/">aiming to show that the mobile social arena can be a business success</a>, and it faces competition from rivals such as Instragram, which is <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/13/instagram-brands/">picking up steam among large brands</a>. </p>
<p>Picplz now has just under 200,000 registered users, and its Web site has a rapidly growing number of daily page views, he said.</p>
<p>Caldwell said the company is also working on more updates for the Android version, but noted that since Android updates don&#8217;t require approval in the same was that Apple updates do, it&#8217;s easier to update that version more frequently with smaller changes.</p>

Now Dick Costolo&#8217;s job is to turn it into a business&#8211;one big enough to justify the sky-high valuation investors have given the messaging company.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll talk to Kara Swisher about the company&#8217;s efforts to sell advertising on the service, and if we&#8217;re lucky, he&#8217;ll give us a glimpse of his improv comedy roots, too. Don&#8217;t be shy, Dick!</p>
<p>Dick starts off by insulting Kara&#8217;s vest. &#8220;Matador casual,&#8221; he calls it. Good one! Kara responds by asking him why he&#8217;s hanging out at CES.</p>

<p>The same reason everyone else is, Dick says: To talk to industry people. For example, he&#8217;d like to get device makers to preload some features like &#8220;Fast Follow.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara wants to know if Dick would like a &#8220;Twitter button&#8221; installed on phones. No, says Dick. But he&#8217;d like Twitter to work the same way on different platforms.</p>
<p>So how do you make that happen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re assigning a product team to make sure that this happens.</p>
<p>Kara: And you&#8217;re talking to TV people, too? What&#8217;s that about?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Because mainstream TV viewing, more and more, they have a device in their hand when they&#8217;re watching TV. Like on &#8220;Glee.&#8221; The characters tweet while the show is on. [This baffles Kara.] When &#8220;Glee&#8221; starts, tweets per second for &#8220;Glee&#8221; shoot up, and stay up 100 times that level until the show ends, and then they drop.</p>
<p>That has interesting implications. Like, it takes the DVR out of the mix, because you have to watch in real time to make it worthwhile.</p>

<p>But we don&#8217;t know if all of this means Twitter while you watch TV, or Twitter actually on your TV screen.</p>
<p>Kara: Is it important for you to be on the screen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re already on the screen. But we don&#8217;t know if that will be the mainstream experience.</p>
<p>Kara: We had Steve Levitan from &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; talking about how the Web doesn&#8217;t help him, but that he and his team like Twitter.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! &#8220;I was having a conversation with Conan O&#8217;Brien, as one does&#8221; and he was talking about the importance of Twitter to him, and how the 140 character limit is the right length for a joke. It&#8217;s definitely the case that network TV people like Twitter, because it gives them feedback, like they&#8217;re in the theater, watching how the shows play out.</p>
<p>Kara: Keep talking about celebrities! I love celebrities.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! The folks that we&#8217;ve hired to work with talent and agencies, etc., we think of those people has high-value publishers. They have a huge following. A lot of people are on Twitter just to hear what those folks have to say.</p>

<p>The interesting thing about the top 200 to 300 tweeters&#8211;a lot of them are musicians, actors, etc. LeBron James, etc. I think Lady Gaga is number one. But! They&#8217;re not <em>all</em> celebrities. There&#8217;s CNN Breaking News. And the New York Times. And other brands like Gary Vaynerchuk, who aren&#8217;t really that known outside that world.</p>
<p>And Twitter is disaggregating some of those businesses. Like a third of all the players in the NFL playoffs are using Twitter actively. And many players have more followers than their teams. [Here Dick explains football to Kara.] That&#8217;s fascinating.</p>
<p>Kara: Let&#8217;s go back to phones. Whats the most important device? Tablet? PC? Phone?</p>
<p>Dick: Mobile is a more and more and more common use of Twitter&#8211;40 percent of all tweets created on mobile devices. That might seem low, but it was 25 percent a year ago. 50 percent of active users are also active on mobile.</p>
<p>But Twitter ought to work platform to platform. We want to be agnostic.</p>
<p>Kara: What about what&#8217;s coming out from Palm? Working with them?</p>
<p>Dick: Not yet.</p>
<p>Kara: What about games? Talking to those guys?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Like with Microsoft on their Xbox, you can see integrating tweets into people who have discussions on Xbox.</p>
<p>Dick: You lost interest in the answer to your question. [True!]</p>
<p>Kara: You&#8217;re so annoying.</p>
<p>[Some laughter. Not a lot, though!]</p>
<p>Dick: Anyway, the important thing for us is consistency across device to device to device.</p>
<p>Kara: Speaking of working consistently, how&#8217;s that going for Twitter?</p>
<p>Dick: Right. So, we raised a bunch of money. We&#8217;re hiring &#8220;tons of engineers and operations engineers&#8221; in the last year. We hired 100 people in Q4, out of about 350 total. And we&#8217;re working very hard on erasing our &#8220;technical debt.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: &#8220;That&#8217;s a great word for fuck-ups&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick: Anyway, we&#8217;ve got a guy assigned to this pretty much exclusively. And there used to be a tolerance for this, and now there isn&#8217;t. If someone fires a pistol next to your ear every hour, after a while you stop flinching when you hear it. It&#8217;s crucial that we do this, both for our users and our engineers, who shouldn&#8217;t have to get up at 3 am all the time.</p>
<p>Kara: Time for a vision question, which stumps Yahoo. What is Twitter? What is your vision?</p>
<p>Dick: &#8220;We want to instantly connect people everywhere to what&#8217;s most important to them.&#8221;</p>
<p>See, that&#8217;s a good statement. We&#8217;re not just a social network that&#8217;s connecting people. It&#8217;s connecting for a purpose.</p>
<p>So some people meet girlfriends on Twitter. And other people get tickets to shows they like on Twitter. Etc.</p>
<p>And you don&#8217;t have to tweet to get a lot of value out of it.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s the percentage of people who just read Twitter, and don&#8217;t tweet themselves?</p>
<p>Dick: Rising. And we have to make that easier to do. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to spend a lot of time making that consumption experience much better.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s your business plan?</p>
<p>Dick: To continue to raise money!</p>

<p>Dick: I&#8217;m going to steal Jeff Weiner&#8217;s line. We&#8217;re a technology company that&#8217;s in the media business. Our business model is an advertising model [cough, cough, that's familiar! You're welcome!] So we&#8217;re selling ads, and we&#8217;re letting people promote their accounts, etc. And we really don&#8217;t have to do anything else. Our engagement rates on these ads are ridiculously high. When we saw our stats this last spring when we launched, the numbers were so big we thought we were measuring it incorrectly.</p>
<p>Kara: Is that a big enough business to be a standalone company and/or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: It&#8217;s enough to be a standalone company.</p>
<p>Kara: Sell or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: We want to be a standalone company. It&#8217;s my sincere hope. We&#8217;ve accomplished 1 percent of what we want to do.</p>

<p>Kara: You like to sell companies, though.</p>
<p>Dick. Yes, I had two companies that I sold. But that doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;ll sell this one. I&#8217;ve had two kids too. But I shouldn&#8217;t get a reputation for having kids.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s up with people buying and selling secondary shares of Twitter. It&#8217;s an issue for Facebook. What about you?</p>
<p>Dick: We keep an eye on it, and talk to employees about it. But I just think that there are other people that are focusing on it and paying attention, and I&#8217;ll let them talk about it. But I just don&#8217;t think about that stuff on a day-to-day basis.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>
<p><strong>Q: [sorry missed it].</strong></p>
<p>But answer seems to be about whether Twitter is a platform company or not. Dick quotes Ev Williams by saying they&#8217;re not a platform company&#8211;they&#8217;ve had an API. They want people to be able build off Twitter and build into Twitter. Which requires a more robust API.</p>
<p>Kara has more questions. How do you look at yourself as a leader?</p>
<p>Dick: As a very bald leader.</p>
<p>Kara: But you&#8217;re very different than Evan.</p>
<p>Dick: Right. Two components. Three founders at company: Ev, Jack, Biz. They all come at it from a different angle. Jack thinks about simplicity and elegance and the mobile experience. Ev thinks about the user. Biz is &#8220;the protector of the brand and the guardian of the culture.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: He&#8217;e the guy who goes on Colbert.</p>
<p>Dick: And he&#8217;s great at it. Anyway, those guys are great. My focus is on operational greatness. I try to emulate operators like Ben Horowitz (Opsware) and Susan Wojcicki (Google).</p>

<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s up with that internal page rank for each user? asks Ben Parr from Mashable.</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Your&#8217;re not exactly right. We play around with stuff like that. But there&#8217;s nothing robust that we would think of productizing anytime soon, and we don&#8217;t use it for things like resonance, which we use in ads.</p>
<p><strong>Q: [Sorry, couldnt quite understand.]</strong></p>
<p>Dick is talking about WikiLeaks in general, says there was something specific about WikiLeaks today that he can’t talk about. In general, he hates government mandates to keep things quiet. And he hates that a woman in China was punished for retweeting something. He reiterates Twitter&#8217;s desire to connect people with useful information. “We’re going to lash out at things that prevent us from doing that, as aggressively as we can.” The proof is that we’re banned in China. “We’re not going to sacrifice what we’re trying to do to, you know, get into this country over here.”</p>

<p><strong>Q: How will you work with brands in the future, vs. advertising?</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Our promoted suite of stuff doesn&#8217;t simply let advertisers use a giant bullhorn. This stuff has to be organic. &#8220;It almost is like a quality-assurance program.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick is now talking about Twitter and international growth and language. Twitter is growing fast in the U.K. but not in Germany. Why is that? Because German has really, really long words. &#8220;There&#8217;s a bunch of stuff we want to do, and have to do&#8221; just to make things usable in those languages.</p>
<p><strong>Last question, from Kara: What&#8217;s the most interesting thing you&#8217;ve seen at CES?</strong></p>
<p>Dick won&#8217;t give a one-word answer. CES is a &#8220;quantum conference.&#8221; Some years are transformational, some are incremental. &#8220;This seems like it was an incremental year.&#8221;</p>

<p>The rich clients of Goldman Sachs, who are poised to grab a $1.5 billion piece of the company?</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2063" title="ZuckerbergD" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/ZuckerbergD-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" />The venture investors, as well as Microsoft, who funded the social networking site when it was not the behemoth it has become?</p>
<p>Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who owns 25 percent of Facebook?</p>
<p>Of course they all do. But in the midst of this investor frenzy around Facebook, it is critical to keep in mind that the most important &#8220;owners&#8221; of Facebook are its <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101230/does-facebook-have-600-million-users-yet/">600 million users</a>.</p>
<p>Not many of them have been invited to invest in the Goldman deal, but without their active support, uploading of all kinds of personal information and their friend networks, Facebook would be worthless.</p>
<p>Those users&#8211;whether or not they are being acknowledged by the company and the markets&#8211;are the <em>real</em> shareholders in Facebook.</p>
<p>And if they left, Facebook would become irrelevant. Such a thing has happened before (see: AOL). It&#8217;s Facebook&#8217;s contract with and service for those users that gives it that massive <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110102/by-the-numbers-goldman-sachs-buddies-up-with-facebook/?mod=ATD_search">$50 billion valuation</a>.</p>
<p>This particular deal might not be eyebrow-raising enough to get a ton of people up in arms, but it was specifically structured to consider Goldman investors a single entity, which some think is being done to circumvent shareholder limits that Facebook has historically avoided (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110106/even-if-it-had-500-shareholders-today-facebook-doesnt-have-to-disclose-financials-until-spring-of-2012/">although it does not have to any longer, as long as it goes public by the end of April of 2012</a>).</p>
<p>But given the events of the last few years, the public and the government have developed an emphatic mistrust of tricky Wall Street accounting. It&#8217;s kind of a sore topic.</p>
<p>And potentially sorer still for Facebook and its consumer image. As the social network has no real competition in most regions and demographics, many users have developed a deep relationship with the service.</p>
<p>Facebook has tried to make its offerings be (and feel) egalitarian, but working hand in glove with Wall Street bankers to freeze out average investors is definitely not that.</p>
<p>Thus, it might be time for the company to think about who its most important constituents are.</p>
<p>Because the only thing that really matters in the long term is if users stick with Facebook or leave it behind.</p>
