			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 a few short weeks away, it’s a good time to look ahead at what’s next for consumer technology. All eyes have been on tablets: Apple sold 40 million iPads in just 18 months, with 11 million sold in this past quarter alone &#8212; phenomenal growth for a new form factor. With the Kindle Fire and Barnes &#038; Noble&#8217;s Nook Tablet finding their own successful markets, it’s easy to see why tablets attract so much attention and excitement. But computing evolution doesn’t end here &#8212; tablets, while still growing rapidly as a category, are not the final form factor.</p>
<p>Product strategists in the PC industry are gearing up for 2012 to be the year of the “ultrabook” &#8212; very thin, very light laptops, usually with solid-state drives (SSD), that compete with Apple’s MacBook Air &#8212; such as the Asus Zenbook and Lenovo U300s. We agree that ultrabooks’ lighter, thinner form will appeal to many consumers. Already, 21 percent of U.S. online consumers say they’re interested in owning one, according to a Forrester Research survey fielded in September. But we see the ultrabook as an evolution of the laptop rather than an entirely new form factor. So what is the next big thing in consumer computing?</p>
<p>The “next big thing” is likely to be many things &#8212; we anticipate accelerating form factor diversification beyond the desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablets and smartphones we have today, as we advance deeper into the Post-PC Era. Based on what we see in research and development labs, new products beginning to come to market and gaps in consumer computing experiences, we’ve identified these five form factors as the best candidates for what comes next:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Wearables:</strong> Wearable devices, or “wearables” for short, are devices worn on or near the body that sense and relay information. Many wearables, like the heads-up display (HUD) contact lenses in development at the University of Washington, are years from marketability. But other wearables are already available as consumer products, for uses such as communication and health and fitness. An increasing number of wearables in the health-and-fitness space interact with Apple iOS devices, such as the Lark Technologies vibrating wristband that doubles as an alarm clock and a sleep sensor; and BodyMedia FIT Armbands, which have four sensors to track activity, sleep and calorie intake. WIMM Labs, a Foxconn-funded start-up in Los Altos, Calif., has designed multifunctional wearables, based on Google’s Android software, that it will license to other companies.</li>
<li><strong>Embedded devices:</strong> We define embedded devices as physical objects that incorporate computing processors and sensors, excluding those worn on the body, which we classify as wearables. Like wearables, embedded devices are diverse in form, ranging from devices such as Livescribe smartpens that fit into your pocket, to LG Thinq refrigerators that sit in your kitchen. Embedded devices may or may not have a display &#8212; Livescribe pens don’t; the LG Thinq appliances do. Today, embedded devices are widely used in industrial automation and automotives, and they have emerging consumer uses in home automation, entertainment and productivity.</li>
<li><strong>Surfaces:</strong> Surfaces are large interactive displays, which may incorporate multitouch, voice and gesture control, facial recognition, near field communication (NFC), quick response (QR) codes or other input/output mechanisms. Today, surfaces are found mostly in public places such as hotels (Microsoft Surface tables in Sheraton bars) and conferences and events (Obscura Digital’s custom multitouch video installations), as well as in education (interactive whiteboards) and news media (red state/blue state maps), but we see potential for additional uses, especially in retail and marketing. For example, retailers such as Victoria’s Secret have commissioned the design firm frog design to create interactive displays for their retail stores. In Seoul, South Korea, retailers use surfaces to extend their reach beyond their stores: Tesco Homeplus, the No. 2 grocery retailer in South Korea, built “virtual malls” in subway stations to reach more customers without building more stores. Commuters take pictures of QR codes under the groceries they want to buy, and the groceries are delivered to their homes.</li>
<li><strong>Flexible displays:</strong> Flexible displays are computing screens that can be rolled, folded or flexed. Flexible devices can take the form of personal devices, such as an e-reader, or larger surface displays, such as furniture or wallpaper. Flexible displays are likely the farthest from becoming commercialized products because of the lack of a defined use case or customer: Polymer Vision, a spinoff of Philips Electronics, promoted its flexible eBook Reader for years, but declared bankruptcy before bringing the device to market. HP has been developing printable Mylar displays that it imagines could be used for candy wrappers, armband computers for the military or living room wallpaper, but the displays are still several years from commercialization.</li>
<li><strong>Miniprojectors:</strong> Miniprojectors are small devices that project a larger image onto another surface or, in the case of holographic projection, into 3-D space. Miniprojectors can be combined with cameras that recognize gesture to become interactive, similar to the Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360. Today, miniprojectors such as the Brookstone Pocket Projector are gaining in popularity as iPhone accessories. But they’re still niche products, as consumers must purchase them separately. Apple has already filed a patent to embed interactive projectors into its iPhones, iPads and Macs. Embedded miniprojectors would appeal primarily to information workers, but there could be broader consumer uses as well, such as impromptu photo slide shows or YouTube viewing in a group.</li>
</ul>
<p>It’s easy to read about computing wallpaper, or contact lenses with embedded heads-up displays, and think that these form factors have no bearing on what product strategists are doing today. But product strategists who see what’s coming can anticipate disruption &#8212; or even innovate and become disruptors themselves. As you think about what’s coming in 2012 and beyond, know that none of these devices will operate in isolation. The most successful products will work with other products &#8212; for example, wearables that talk to smartphones and TVs; surfaces that are activated by the presence of your smartphone. We’re living in a multidevice, multiconnection world, and the best experiences will be those that work across devices and platforms. In that sense, the next phase of the Post-PC Era doesn’t look so different from today.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last winter, I spent a good hour shopping online for the perfect black leather boots. I used tabbed browsing to open at least 25 Web pages, comparing each pair&#8217;s cost, heel height, zipper, leather and toe style. I emailed a friend with links to a few sites so I could get her opinion. And when I finally decided on the right pair, I dug through my email inbox to find a coupon code for 20% off.</p>
<p>This week I tested a solution that might have made my quest for boots a little simpler. Snipi, which became available as a free download from <a href="http://Snipi.com">Snipi.com</a> on Monday, helps you organize your online-shopping results by gathering, or &#8220;snipping,&#8221; product information from Web pages and saving the information to lists.</p>
<p>These lists are stored on your personalized Snipi page, where you can access them later. Snipi also can save photos and videos to lists. And it has a coordinating iPhone app that shows up-to-date versions of the lists created on the computer, so you can have them with you on the go.</p>

<p>To do all this, you use the Snipi Toolbar, a horizontal window that pops up within your browser so you never have to navigate away from the site where you&#8217;re shopping. If you see an item you like, simply drag and drop an image of it into the toolbar, where details about the item &#8212; including its title, price and image &#8212; are automatically filled in. If the item was previously snipped by another Snipi user, a description box will be filled with whatever that person wrote or pasted in from the product page; you can fill in the box yourself, too.</p>
<p>Snipi has a partnership with Shopzilla Inc., so the Snipi Toolbar also has comparison shopping built in: It displays links to Web sites where your snipped product, or products like it, can be found at lower prices.</p>
<p>One of the big drawbacks to Snipi is that it currently works only as a browser plug-in with Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox, not Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Internet Explorer or Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Safari. Snipi says it plans to introduce versions of its toolbar &#8212; though less functional ones &#8212; for IE and Safari by early to mid-June. Even so, downloading and installing a browser plug-in isn&#8217;t yet a routine thing for most people. And often, people who use plug-ins forget to keep them up-to-date.</p>
<p>Another downside to Snipi is that its comparison-pricing feature failed with apparel. The feature only really worked when used with &#8220;hard goods&#8221; like electronics, which are sold at retailers that participate in price-comparison networks. Yet Snipi still makes pricing suggestions for clothing and shoes, however irrelevant. For example, when I snipped a $150 Banana Republic dress, a link to $16 eye shadow sold at <a href="http://Sephora.com">Sephora.com</a> appeared in the Price Compare column. To reduce confusion, Snipi shouldn&#8217;t make such suggestions for apparel.</p>
<p>A handy feature built into the Snipi Toolbar lets you immediately share items via email or post them on Facebook, Twitter or WordPress blogs. This would have been useful while I was shopping online for boots because I could have more quickly shared my finds with friends, rather than copying and pasting URLs into emails.</p>
<p>While browsing on <a href="http://BestBuy.com">BestBuy.com</a> (BBY), I found a Sony (SNE) Cybershot DSC-W220 with 12 megapixels and a 4x zoom lens for $199. Selecting a small icon in the Firefox browser&#8217;s bottom right corner, I opened the Snipi Toolbar and created a &#8220;Digicams&#8221; list, including the Sony. Snipi suggested alternative prices for this camera, including $159 for the same thing on <a href="http://Amazon.com">Amazon.com</a> (AMZN).</p>
<p>I got an early start on bathing-suit shopping by browsing Web sites for J. Crew, Victoria&#8217;s Secret and Macy&#8217;s. As expected, the price-comparison suggestions didn&#8217;t make sense. For one $58 Victoria&#8217;s Secret bathing suit, Snipi suggested a list of alternatives, including a $170 Kohler shower door, $203 Giorgio Armani glasses and an $82 corded telephone. I assure you that the bathing suit looked nothing like any of those items.</p>
<p>Confusing alternatives aside, I liked using the Snipi Toolbar as a place to gather my online research. It displayed images of items neatly lined up in a row, and when I selected an item, the description appeared. Someone like my sister, who is planning a wedding, might enjoy using the Snipi Toolbar for saving photos of various locations in a list she could call &#8220;Wedding Venues.&#8221; She could then share the entire list with me in one step. Or she could go visit some of the places and bring an iPhone with the Snipi app to see her list.</p>

<p>I tried the iPhone app, and it was a cinch to tap My Lists to see the online research I&#8217;d gathered. Here, as on the browser toolbar, visuals make it easy to glance through many products.</p>
<p>The toolbar can save various lists that you name and categorize into Shop, Photos or Videos, and these can be kept private, shared with friends or made public. Public lists are seen by all other users on <a href="http://Snipi.com">Snipi.com</a>, which is also a social-networking site. I wouldn&#8217;t use it as such, because I already rely on other social-networking outlets, but some people might.</p>
<p>Snipi, which uses a guessing algorithm to fill in details like a product&#8217;s price, says its toolbar will improve as more people use it. If you do a lot of research or online shopping or you simply want an online tool for saving images and videos from the Web, Snipi will work well for you. Its price-comparison suggestions need some improvement, but I felt more organized after using the Snipi Toolbar for a week&#8217;s worth of browsing.</p>

<p>CBS paid $1.8 billion for CNET last summer, and today it is dealing with the consequences: <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081211/confirmed-cbs-interactive-restructuring-after-cnet-deal-cutting-staff/">A re-org and layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>CBS execs won&#8217;t release specifics on the firings and won&#8217;t say how many people were let go altogether. So news will be coming out in piecemeal fashion for some time.</p>
<p>The best that I can tell, though, the cuts came throughout the company&#8217;s interactive group, from its London-based last.fm radio service through CBS (CBS) headquarters in New York to CNET&#8217;s homebase in San Francisco.</p>
<p>Based on the fact that CBS Interactive boss Quincy Smith flew to the west coast to quarterback the re-org this morning&#8211;and the fact that CNET was much, much bigger than the CBS Interactive group&#8211;I&#8217;m assuming that more CNET employees were let go than anyone else.</p>

<p>In the meantime, here&#8217;s the new structure of Smith&#8217;s group, via an internal memo that comes from him and Neil Ashe, his CNET counterpart:</p>

<p>As we come to the end of 2008, we have a lot to be proud of. CBS Interactive is the best online content network for information and entertainment. Our properties are expanding, advertisers are capitalizing on our properties and their scale, and we are positioned well to continue to grow. As we prepare for 2009 and beyond, we&#8217;d like to update you on this progress, announce some organizational changes and comment on the broader market environment and how it impacts CBS Interactive.</p>
<p>Progress</p>
<p>CBS Interactive is the 8th largest Internet network in the world. Our combined traffic is up nearly 30% since we closed the merger this summer. CNET, CBSSports.com, BNET, GameSpot, TV.com, CBS.com, last.fm, and CHOW have each had record traffic within the past three months. Our commitment to our users is paying off.</p>
<p>Advertisers have noticed. We have recently signed and announced deals across several of our properties with Microsoft, AT&amp;T, Intel, Bertolli, EA, and GM. In these challenging economic times, marketers are consolidating their efforts with their best partners. Our properties, our audiences, our ideas and our insights will continue to differentiate us in the marketplace.</p>
<p>Finally, we have contributed to and benefited from the TV and Radio divisions of CBS. We&#8217;ve done nearly 1,500 purpose-driven promotions to our properties on Broadcast TV, Radio and local TV Stations; CHOW and GameSpot content is running on the CBS Outernet; and CNET ran a major consumer campaign in markets like New York and San Francisco through CBS Outdoor. CBS Interactive is also a key partner to CBS Television Network for major broadcast events. In just the last week, we featured complementary content for events including The Victoria&#8217;s Secret Fashion Show, the Grammy Nominations and the SEC Championship.</p>
<p>Moving forward, we have a lot to look forward to. Events like CES, The Grammys, and March Madness on Demand are all just around the corner. Each represent huge cross-platform opportunities where CBS Interactive will again help complete the experience with coverage on air, online, and on mobile for our audiences.</p>
<p>Organizational Promotions and Changes</p>
<p>As we enter 2009, we are making some changes to our organizational structure to capitalize on audience and advertiser overlaps. We are also making some changes to key functions so that we can realize the benefits of our position in the marketplace. These changes mark another significant milestone in our integration, as we fine-tune our organization to best take advantage of the power of our entire network.</p>
<p>Sports, Games and Music</p>
<p>We are combining our Sports, Games and Music properties into a single group led by Steve Snyder. Steve has tremendous product and leadership experience and an enthusiasm for each of these categories. In addition, Tom Jones will be moving over from CNET to head-up the sales efforts for this group. Within the group, our talented senior leaders including Jason Kint, Rich Calacci, Jaci Hays, Kevin Menard, Felix Miller, Doug Schmidt and others will report to Steve and to Tom.</p>
<p>Entertainment &amp; Lifestyle</p>
<p>We are also moving our Lifestyle properties, CHOW and UrbanBaby, to the Entertainment group (TV.com, CBS.com, The CBS Audience Network and TheInsider.com) to capitalize on the similarities in audience and advertisers. This group will continue to be led by Anthony Soohoo with sales led by Ken Lagana. We&#8217;re excited to see the innovation that will come from this group in 2009.</p>
<p>Technology &amp; News</p>
<p>Under the continued leadership of Joe Gillespie, our Technology &amp; News division will bring CBSNews.com and CNET News.com into a single CBS Interactive News Group. Each site will maintain its own brand identity, while benefiting from shared resources in design, product and engineering to deliver deeper and more comprehensive coverage of major stories and events. Led by Mark Larkin, with Dan Farber as Editor-in-Chief, CBS News.com and CNET News.com will also have the opportunity to share content and collaborate on stories for the benefit of their unique audiences.</p>
<p>CBS Interactive Marketing</p>
<p>We are bringing together our key marketing functions into a new group called CBS Interactive Marketing led by Mickey Wilson. The group brings together expertise from across the organization so that we can capitalize on our biggest opportunities, and elevate the company to be a strategic marketing partner whose products, consumer insights, and ad innovations are critical to our clients&#8217; long-term success. They will establish the company as the standard for premium content online, and define and evolve brand strategies to capture the biggest opportunities for audience and revenue growth through market planning, insights and execution.</p>
<p>CBS Interactive Business Development</p>
<p>We are also bringing together all of our business development activities. This group will be led by Mike Marquez. Mike and his team will be responsible for the development of all new partnerships, investments, and acquisitions. They will be charged with taking advantage of knowledge sharing across the whole company to ensure that we are the strategic partner of choice for the industry.</p>
<p>Market Conditions</p>
<p>As you know the general economic environment continues to be a challenge. We have always been very aggressive about managing our costs, and that requirement is even more critical now than it has ever been. We believe this new, more efficient organizational structure will produce better results for CBS Interactive, and also result in lower operating costs. It is always very difficult to make these kinds of reductions, but they come after a thorough review of how we are organized and how we operate, and what best serves our many users, advertisers and employees.</p>
<p>CBS Interactive is a special place because of you, and we thank each of you for what you have done, are doing, and will do to exceed the expectations of the tens of millions of people who come to our properties every day.</p>
