Hey, Sexy Lady. You're at 804 million views and counting. (Sorry about that, Justin.)

Thursday was Thanksgiving. Yesterday was Black Friday. And today is Gangnam Style Day — the day the world’s most-popular-but-not-sure-why video became the most popular video on YouTube ever, with some 804 million views.

No need to show you the video, since you’ve already seen it, over and over.

But perhaps you’re like me, and have never seen the previous reigning champ: Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” So here you go:

And here’s a chart from YouTube-tracker ChannelMeter, which shows how Psy’s crazily fast ascent hasn’t tailed off in the last month. ChannelMeter figures the clip has been generating some 6 million views a day since its debut in July, while Bieber gets about 400,000 — he’s been around for nearly two years.

ChannelMeter predicts Gangnam will hit the billion mark on December 16.

What does it all mean? I assume many crappy thesis papers on that subject are being cranked out right now, but my hunch is that the answer is something like: YouTube is very big + K-pop is very big + YouTube is very big with Asians and Asian-Americans + random chance.

Fun thought experiment: Get in the way-back machine and imagine that we had YouTube in 1994. How much bigger does the Macarena get?

You can see the Bruno Mars/Pandora sketch all over the Web. Except on the sites NBC owns.

“Saturday Night Live” used to worry that people would watch the sketch show on the Web. Now it embraces the idea.

The show even hired a social media agency to push links and embed codes out early Sunday morning after a new episode airs, so it will get maximum exposure.

But you can be as Web-savvy as you want and still bump into stubborn copyright laws. Which is what appeared to happen this weekend with a sketch that starred Brunos Mars as a Pandora intern.

As far as NBC.com is concerned, the sketch never happened, which means you can’t see it on the network’s site, or on Hulu, either as a clip or as part of the entire episode’s playback.

The very, very obvious culprit here are music licenses, which are almost always the culprit behind missing SNL sketches: In the course of seven minutes, Mars belts out pieces of songs from Katy Perry, Green Day, Aerosmith and Michael Jackson. And if the show doesn’t have the digital rights to a single piece of a single song, the whole thing goes black on the Web, legally speaking.

Still, it’s a sketch about a big, well-known tech brand, and those things always do well on the Internet. So you can still see it all over the Web — including our site — but none of the benefit accrues to NBC or its affiliated sites.

Instead, the winner here is something called GossipCop, which turns out to be part of the Dan “Mediaite” Abrams stable, all of which are very happy to take stuff that runs on TV and replay it over the Web.

But even that is a step forward for NBC, which must surely be aware that Abrams is making money off its clip, but isn’t grousing loudly enough to make him take it down. So, until/unless he does:

From the “how not to win at YouTube” files: Mitt Romney’s now-infamous talk to a group of Republican donors is the new “Gangnam Style,” minus the dancing, the K-Pop and the obtuse visual metaphors.

Web video tracker/ad network Visible Measures says that excerpts from the chat, and responses to the chat, have generated two million views in the last day. As BuzzFeed explains this morning, elements of the speech have floated around the Web for months. But it didn’t break big until it got a push from Mother Jones.

From the muckraking magazine, here’s the money clip, which has generated 1.6 million views:

Noah Kalina's famous human time-lapse project is now 12.5 years long.

One of the original viral videos, “Noah K. Everyday,” is back.

Fittingly, it’s more of the same. Photographer Noah Kalina today released a version that includes 12.5 years of his daily self-portraits stitched together.

The original video, “Noah takes a photo of himself every day for 6 years,” which was released in 2006, has more than 23 million views on YouTube.

As with the last video, it’s a mind-bender to watch time pass so slowly and so quickly at the same time. I had fun scrubbing back and forth to find the precise moment when Kalina begins growing out an enormous beard.

Why 12.5 years? “It is almost exactly six years since the release of the first one and the timing felt right,” Kalina explained in an email today.

Kalina — who, by the way, was Mark Zuckerberg’s wedding photographer — said the new piece will be included in a School of Visual Arts alumni show, which opens Thursday.

For further watching, the original:

“Homer Every Day,” a parody by The Simpsons:

Homer Every Day from Noah K. on Vimeo.

And another cool human time-lapse, this one with a bit more plot, which I found posted in the comments of Kalina’s new video:

It’s like a skateboarding dog, or a Korean pop sensation, but so much weirder: Clint Eastwood’s monologue-with-chair routine is this week’s viral video. And like all viral videos, it needs a response.

So you here you go: A two-fer from Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who were smart enough to make sure they changed their broadcast schedules this week, precisely so they could riff on stuff like this.

If you’re time-pressed, check out Colbert’s follow-up chair interview. But if you can, invest in the extra 10 minutes for Stewart’s rant, one of his all-time classics:

A parody video imagines what would happen if Apple aimed its patent death rays at the Starship Enterprise.

As the world tries to figure out the impact of Apple’s massive court win over Samsung, a new video imagines what might happen if the company asserted its rights over the spaceship on “Star Trek.”

The parody video sees a bleak world for the Starship Enterprise, as key features are crippled due to Apple’s massive intellectual property holdings. Between Siri and Apple’s gesture patents, it seems Apple’s hold extends beyond the smartphone space and into outer space.

While “Star Trek” may not have a role in the case, Samsung did try to use another science-fiction flick as an example of prior art in the Apple case.

However, Judge Lucy Koh put the kibosh on using “2001: A Space Odyssey” as an example of a pre-iPad tablet.

Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell are older and healthier. And they would like a check from YouTube.

“Lazy Sunday” is more than six years old. You kind of have to give the “Saturday Night Live” people credit for not remaking it earlier.

But here it is: See, Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell are older, healthier, and they go to Broadway shows, not movie matinees. But they’re still rapping about Rachel McAdams.

The best line, of course, is Samberg’s shout-out to Google — a reminder that he’s still waiting for a “fxxxing YouTube check” for the first “Lazy Sunday,” which NBC doesn’t allow on the video site anymore.

But Samberg’s other viral videos are all proudly displayed on a YouTube channel. And while the clip helped build YouTube into a powerhouse that sold to Google for $1.6 billion, it also helped revive SNL and build Samberg’s career. So everybody did just fine.

And here’s the original (which on NBC’s SNL page, at least, came bundled with an ad for… “Sister Act”).

Odds are you can't make a viral video to launch your start-up. Still, here are some tips that can improve your odds.

We all know the story of the Dollar Shave Club video. It was really funny, it went viral, and it helped the razor-selling start-up that created it make a huge splash.

So the lesson here is clear: If you want your start-up to break out from the pack, you need a viral video — five million YouTube views and counting — too. Right?

Right. Except you probably can’t make a viral video. Because if it were easy to do it, then everyone would do it.

Still, you can improve your odds. Dollar Shave CEO Michael Dubin stopped by the Ad Age conference this week (he was picking up a “Viral Video” award) and gave us a couple minutes and a couple tips. One how-to he could have mentioned to me beforehand — don’t shoot your stuff in a stairwell.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=2B15A1C1-B9EB-4D4A-9E2A-753BDD624C37&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

Side note: The thing I find most interesting about the Dollar Shave Club video is that Dubin had the video before he had the start-up: He shot a rough cut of the clip last fall and used that as part of his funding pitch. And once he rounded up his money — from the likes of Andreessen Horowitz and Kleiner Perkins — he figured he’d use the clip as an ancillary bit of media, not his primary launch tool.

His backers set him straight, he says. “They told me, ‘The video is the thing,’” he says. And they were right.

Still suffering withdrawal from an annual holiday-season Hobbit habit? Hope is but a year away.

Since about 2004, the holiday season has been missing a little something. During the prior three years, I had become accustomed to standing in line to see a “Lord of the Rings” movie. But there were only three of them and, well, once the trilogy was done, it was done. Ever since, I’ve kind of moped a bit without a cinematic trip to Middle Earth to look forward to.

I’ve seen two performances of The Lord of the Rings in Concert, which is great fun and has been at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in previous autumns. But not this year.

But next year — and the year after that — I can renew my Hobbit habit. Yesterday the trailer for the first of two films based on “The Hobbit” hit the Internet. This one will be called “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and will be in 3-D. It will cover roughly the first half of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel that predates the “Lord” trilogy, and includes the finding of the ring that’s central to the later story. Also there’s one surprise: The trailer sure makes it look like Gandalf and Galadriel are, or once were, an item. I sure don’t remember that from the books.

We here at AllThingsD have been paying close attention to the progress of these films, hanging on every video-blog posting by famed director Peter Jackson. (And if you haven’t seen them, they’re very fun to watch: Part 1; Part 2; Part 3.) I don’t think I’m the only member of the team that has a Hobbit habit. But I’m probably the only one who will admit it.

Anyhow, here’s the trailer. Enjoy:

No cats, or Pitbull, featured here. Just an hour and a half of people talking about physics genius Richard Feynman. (PS: Plenty of stuff like this all over YouTube, for free.)

YouTube viewers like clips about cats, and music videos featuring Pitbull.

But even though the world’s biggest video site is on a mission to upgrade its content to include more “premium” stuff, there’s plenty of it on the site right now. It’s just that you have to know where to look for it, and a lot of it is only going to appeal to a relatively small group of people.

Here, for example, is a full-length biography of physics genius Richard Feynman. Given that it doesn’t appear to be uploaded by the BBC, which made the show, I’m not quite sure if it’s supposed to be there. On the other hand, it appears to have been up on the site for a full year, and has attracted thousands of views, so presumably the Beeb could have had it yanked if it wanted to. (YouTube, by the way, used to have a 10-minute limit on uploads, in part to prevent people from playing entire movies on the site. But it dropped that requirement a while ago.)

No big takeaway here, other than these two things:

If you’re at all interested in modern science, and have an hour and a half to spare, this should be on your list.

There’s lots of other stuff like this buried in the 48 hours of video per minute that users upload to the site. You just need someone to point you to it. In this case, that would be the excellent Maria Popova.

Same as it ever was: YouTube users really like cute cats, and cute dogs, and so-bad-they're-awesome girl singers. But what they really, really like are videos from the big music labels.

YouTube is embarking on a big push to make the world’s biggest video site look more like TV: It wants to have fancier productions and programming that encourages you to stick around for hours, not minutes.

Meanwhile, YouTube users seem very happy to do what they have always done on YouTube: Watch weird clips of people and animals behaving oddly.

The site has published its list of 2011’s most popular videos, and they’re basically what you’d expect: Clips of cute dogs, and cute babies, and an annoying 8-bit cat, and a really cute cat. And, of course, Rebecca Black, the poor/maybe rich girl who may or may not be in on the joke. Probably not.

The surprise, if you don’t pay attention to this stuff, is that YouTube’s Top 10 most-popular list of 2011 isn’t really the site’s Top 10 most-popular list. It’s the list of the top 10 videos not put out by big music companies.

Because those clips, which are distributed by Vevo, the Hulu-for-music videos, are way, way, way more popular than anything else on the site.

The most popular music video of the year, for instance, is this Jennifer Lopez clip, featuring Pitbull. It’s at nearly half a billion views, which means it is likely more than 2x Rebecca Black’s clip, the top non-big-music-label clip.

In fact, it turns out that any clip featuring Pitbull does exceptionally well. Here are two more, which collectively have generated close to 400 million views. I’ll let much smarter people, like Maura Johnston, explain why Pitbull is so popular. For our purposes, the key takeaway here is that people really, really, really like watching music videos on YouTube. Even more than they like funny girls and cute cats.

The Republican primaries continue to generate lots of video views for YouTube.

What will the viral video guys track once the Republican primaries are over? But yes, for the record: Rick Perry’s on-stage brain leak last night has quickly become one of the Web’s biggest hits.

Visible Measures says it has attracted more than 1 million views since last night. I can tell you with almost clinical precision that his debate gaffe occurred around 10:18 pm Eastern time, because it was all over Twitter as soon as it left — or didn’t leave — his mouth.

Still, it’s not Perry’s biggest Web video hit (yet). Visible Measures reminds us that his first big campaign ad racked up more than 2 million views earlier this fall.

Meanwhile, for ad/tech/biz types: Note that the moment occurred on CNN’s broadcast, but YouTube attributes the bulk of the views to Huffington Post co-founder Jonah Peretti’s BuzzFeed, which got the clip up with alacrity. [Ugh. As Ethan Mandel notes, this was actually CNBC's broadcast -- easy enough to spot had I been paying attention -- and now CNBC has removed this particular version. Still easy enough to find on YouTube, though.]

AllThingsD's Ina Fried was headed to dinner during her trip to Seoul on Monday when she ran into a crowd of Koreans line dancing. Apparently, this is the Korean political system in action.

During one of my evenings off in Seoul earlier this week, I headed to a popular mall for dinner.

On my way, I ran into a group of Koreans who were line dancing for what appeared to be no reason at all. I’m told it had to do with the local mayoral election, which at that time was just a couple of days away.

I’m not sure what it was meant to signify, but I will say it was a lot more fun than getting handed a pamphlet. In any case, it seems to have worked, as the party being backed by the dancers — the liberal opposition party — saw its candidate, Park Won-soon, win the election.

The upcoming movie from Justin Timberlake — who starred in “The Social Network” playing hyperactive entrepreneur Sean Parker and who recently was part of a group that bought Myspace — is also techtastic.

In the futuristic film “In Time,” Timberlake plays a man who must steal time to live longer. It feels a little like “Logan’s Run,” but with better clothes.

Timberlake, who is also a singer, is trying to leverage the good notices he got from the Facebook movie to a more wide-ranging Hollywood career.

Enjoy:

"What we do know for sure is that Ashton Kutcher invented Twitter in the year 2006."

No matter what anyone tells you, there is no way to guarantee your video will go viral. But one way to dramatically increase the odds is to make your video about a big, popular social media company. The kind that might end up promoting your video itself.

Which makes it odd that this day-old clip from Funny or Die, which gives Twitter the Ken Burns documentary treatment in honor of its fifth anniversary, hasn’t exploded already. Because:

It’s about Twitter.

It’s got the Twitter seal of approval.

It also has an endorsement from Perez Hilton, who also appears in the thing.*

It’s actually quite funny, too.

I’m sure it will get there, though. Enough words. Watch!

(Oh. Not totally safe for work. There are some swears.)

Which happens to be a Red Bull ad. Not that you'd know it....

In April 2009, Danny MacAskill posted this amazing video of him and his bike jumping on and over fences, stairwells and buildings. Since then it’s generated more than 21 million YouTube views.

So here’s a new one: Same cool stunts (to my eyes, at least). More exotic locations. And it looks like it will be a hit, too. Helped by a push from Boing Boing, it’s gathered more than two million views in the last week.

And, as Ad Age’s Michael Learmonth points out, it’s also an ad, paid for by Red Bull.

That won’t be entirely clear to most viewers, since the words “Red Bull” don’t show up until the end of the seven-minute-plus clip. And also because the folks at Google’s YouTube have plastered the video with overlay ads for products that are not Red Bull’s.

But the Red Bull people are apparently okay with that, since letting Google run an ad on your video is an opt-in decision.

How a crime story turned into a viral video, which launched a much bigger viral video, which turned into a sort-of hit song. A Google/Apple success story.

Many of you probably know that this viral video…

…recently begat this much more popular viral video, which eventually turned into a hit song at Apple’s (APPL) iTunes:

But here’s the full backstory, via the “Auto-Tune the News” guys behind the whole thing. They told their tale at Google’s (GOOG) Zeitgeist conference this week, impressing at least one high-profile attendee.

And if you’re a little uneasy about the notion of hipster Brooklyn kids turning someone else’s real-life crime story into a novelty song, I hear you. But the Auto-Tune dudes say they split their iTunes sales with unintentional star Antoine Dodson. So we’re all good. Right?

If anyone really knew how to make viral Web hits, they'd be really, really rich. But BuzzFeed's Jonah Peretti, who helped the Huffington Post become an Internet sensation and launched several Web hits of his own, has some how-to tips.

Everyone who makes stuff for the Web wants it to go “viral.” But you can’t just make your stuff go viral–anyone who actually found out how to do that would be very, very rich.

Still, there are ways to increase your chances of making stuff go viral. Or at least improve the performance of stuff that is going viral.

That’s sort of the premise behind BuzzFeed, Jonah Peretti’s New York start-up. Last night, Peretti put on a presentation that was half sales pitch and half how-to guide for aspiring viral-content makers. You should click through the whole thing, which is quite entertaining and embedded at the bottom of this post. Sample:

Note that some of Peretti’s presentation focuses on how the Huffington Post maximizes its traffic. That’s because Peretti was a co-founder (or early hire, depending on who tells the tale) at Huffpo, and crucial to setting up the site’s tech-savvy strategy.

Many people still think of Huffpo as a political site fueled by celebrity bloggers, but the site’s real recipe for success is its focus on real-time traffic analysis. Huffpo doesn’t talk about this much in public, but slide No. 18 gives you an idea of what the site is doing.

And, because Peretti knows what he’s doing, these slides are almost certainly going to become a Web pass-along. The Jews vs. Mormons analogy he starts on slide No. 29 pretty much guarantees that.

Jonah Peretti Viral Meetup Talk

Here’s yet another spoof of the trailer for “The Social Network”–a.k.a. The Facebook Movie–subbing in Twitter as the villainous Web 2.0 company.

It’s called “The Twit Network,” and it is very funny.

Best line: “I need to create a way to blog that is as random and incoherent as writing on a bathroom wall.”

It follows a spoof trailer on YouTube called “The Video Website,” which includes the wonderful line “The keyboard cat wants more money.”

Enjoy until the next one (along with the YouTube one and a spoof of the Facebook Movie trailer about Facebook):

Two weeks ago, luxury footwear designer Christian Louboutin quietly launched a new website that prominently featured a rather unusual video. In it, a truck drives over a pile of what appear to be Mr. Louboutin’s signature red-soled shoes, which retail for $600 and up, and are a recent source of inspiration for Jennifer Lopez.

“I hope that little motion-picture destruction…gets picked up virally,” said Harley Lewin, partner at McCarter & English LLP, who represents Louboutin on intellectual property issues. An observer working with Mr. Lewin shot the footage in China, after a seizure of fake merchandise by the Chinese Administration for Industry and Commerce.

The website, www.stopfakelouboutin.com, marks a stark change in the way luxury brands are addressing the problem of fakes.

How to help a battered brand: A minivan ad designed for YouTube.

All marketers say they want viral videos. But few have any idea how to create one. Toyota has figured this one out, though, with a clip released this week promoting its Sienna Minivan. Remember when the idea of selling minivans on YouTube sounded nuts?

A few notes:

Toyota has been doing variations on this theme all year, including a Super Bowl spot. You can see them all on the “Channel” page Toyota has set up on Google’s (GOOG) YouTube. But none of them have caught on like this clip.

If director Jody Hill’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s one of the guys behind the excellent Eastbound & Down. If you haven’t seen it, you should. (Saatchi & Saatchi gets credit for the whole thing).

So here’s the thing: I’m pretty sure I’m at the bull’s-eye center of the target demo for this one. And it makes me feel warm about Toyota (TM), unintended acceleration or no. But I’m still not buying a minivan. Yet.
