Judging by its new entry in the women’s fashion department, Boutiques.com, Google’s personal style is Mix ‘N’ Match Eclectic. The site blends computer geekery (visual search and algorithmic recommendations) with fashion geekery (collections curated by taste-makers) and accessorizes the outfit with social features (create your own boutique and follow others).

Google’s M&A of the Day: “Visual Search” Start-Up, Plink

It’s Monday, which means that Google has purchased another company. Today’s deal is for Plink, a U.K. start-up that specializes in “visual search”–the future-is-now technology that lets you hunt for something on the Web by taking a picture of it with your smartphone.

Guns, Lots of Guns: A Video of Microsoft's Bing Visual Search, Aiming Right at Google

With all the Microsoft employees tweeting about Bing 2.0 last week, especially its new Visual Search offering, launched yesterday, BoomTown thought it might be better just to show it in action. Think of that scene in “The Matrix” when Neo asks for “guns, lots of guns,” and you have a good idea of what it looks like. Microsoft is going to need a lot more of this kind of innovative firepower if it hopes to have a chance of competing in search against Google.

Bing: Now With Visual Search

Hoping to further differentiate its new Bing search engine from market leader Google, Microsoft is moving away from the proverbial “10 blue links” we so often associate with the search experience. During a presentation at the TechCrunch 50 event in San Francisco, the company announced Bing Visual Search, a Silverlight-based feature that replaces those links with images.
