Two makes a trend, as far as I am concerned, so here is movie director Sam Mendes — following in the digital footsteps of “The Hobbit” helmer Peter Jackson — making a video blog for the latest James Bond film, “Skyfall.”

It is a much shorter video, but presumably there will be more.

I am a giant Bond fan, so I will certainly be watching:

Here’s the fifth in a series of videos blogs, or vlogs, being done by director Peter Jackson on his making of “The Hobbit” movie.

I really like how he’s doing this online, especially given the interest from the huge fan base for the fantasy novel by J. R. R. Tolkien.

The prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, which Jackson also directed, “The Hobbit” is being filmed in New Zealand — standing in for Middle-earth — and will be released in two parts, in December 2012 and December 2013.

I’ve seen two performances of The Lord of the Rings in Concert, which is great fun and has been at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in previous autumns. But not this year.

But next year — and the year after that — I can renew my Hobbit habit. Yesterday the trailer for the first of two films based on “The Hobbit” hit the Internet. This one will be called “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and will be in 3-D. It will cover roughly the first half of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel that predates the “Lord” trilogy, and includes the finding of the ring that’s central to the later story. Also there’s one surprise: The trailer sure makes it look like Gandalf and Galadriel are, or once were, an item. I sure don’t remember that from the books.

We here at AllThingsD have been paying close attention to the progress of these films, hanging on every video-blog posting by famed director Peter Jackson. (And if you haven’t seen them, they’re very fun to watch: Part 1; Part 2; Part 3.) I don’t think I’m the only member of the team that has a Hobbit habit. But I’m probably the only one who will admit it.

Famed director Peter Jackson, who helmed the “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, has promised to continue his production video blog from the movie set of “The Hobbit,” which is filming in New Zealand.

The man keeps his promise with a new installment that has lots more action.

I read the classic book when I was but a wee lass, so I will be very interested to see how it comes to life.

For many years now, one of our regular attendees at the D: All Things Digital conference has been award-winning movie and television director, producer and writer Barry Sonnenfeld, who is–as it turns out–a not-so-closeted geek in his spare time.

(He also appeared onstage in 2006 at D4 in an interview with Walt Mossberg, which you can see here.)

In fact, the man behind movies like “Men in Black” and TV shows like “Pushing Daisies” (and who likes to sport a Stetson and cowboy boots 24/7) does a gadget review column for Esquire magazine called “The Digital Man.”

Now he is branching out to a vlog about his geek passions on Crackle, which will appear every two weeks from wherever he is–either from his homes in East Hampton, N.Y. or Telluride, Colo., or from movie or TV sets.

And, compared to the cinéma vérité style of BoomTown (translation: shaky filming and bad sound), Sonnenfeld’s vlogs are pretty high quality, although they are not too overdone as those from Hollywood types always are, and it’s hard not to admire the editorial use of a martini.

But, while YouTube is sometimes seen as synonymous with the Internet video revolution, there is a lot more to Web video. In fact, some of the most interesting video on the Web isn’t even the type of stuff that’s most popular on YouTube — short, one-off clips.

In various corners of the Web, people are producing real, episodic TV shows, including news, drama and comedy — sometimes with real actors and professional production values. Some of these longer-form, episodic shows are called video blogs, or vlogs, but others simply call themselves shows. Instead of lasting just a few minutes, they can run up to half an hour. These programs have more in common with regular broadcast and cable shows than with those emailed clips.
