Strong Christmas Not Enough to Save 2009 for Videogame Industry

The videogame industry eked out strong December sales, with higher prices of portable devices overcoming a decline in sales for all other categories, according to a new report from The NDP Group. Overall, sales for the year were down eight percent, with revenues of close to $19.66 billion compared with $21.4 billion in 2008. Nintendo held gaming court as it took three of the top ten best-selling game spots.

If the latest sales data are any indication, the videogame industry may be headed for a rough holiday season. NPD Group reports that revenue from consoles and software plummeted during October, falling 16.4 percent from September and 19 percent year-over-year. It was the industry’s seventh consecutive monthly decline.

Videogame Firms Make a Play for Women

Videogame publishers, pushing to expand their businesses, are making games that target girls and women a new industry battleground. This holiday season, more games than ever are being geared toward female players. Electronic Arts Inc. is releasing the latest installment of its “Littlest Pet Shop” game for young girls and introducing a series of fashion-themed games called “Charm Girls Club” for older girls later this month.
