<p>In a new report, Flurry Analytics estimates that in the final seven days of 2011, 1.2 billion apps were downloaded worldwide across both Android and iOS, representing a 60 percent jump over a typical week.</p>
<p>More important, it is the first time the globe has punched through the billion-download mark, according to the technology company, which builds tools that thousands of developers use to track usage of their mobile applications.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111227/a-gift-to-developers-a-quarter-of-a-billion-apps-downloaded-on-christmas/">Flurry had said last week</a> that a record-breaking 6.8 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day, along with an equally record-breaking 242 million application downloads. For the entire week, it now is estimating that 20 million iOS and Android devices were activated.</p>
<p>Additionally, Flurry discovered that Americans represented the biggest app addicts, downloading 509 million of the worldwide total.</p>
<p>The remainder of the top five countries are: China (99 million); the U.K. (81 million); Canada (41 million); Germany and France (40 million each).</p>

<p>In the new year, Flurry is forecasting that application downloads will frequently break the one-billion-a-week mark.</p>
<p>In 2011, it added, Apple&#8217;s App Store was on pace to exceed 10 billion downloads, which was twice the number it recorded over the three previous years combined. Likewise, the Android Market is also setting records. Over the past seven months, it achieved more than seven billion downloads, taking its life-to-date total past 10 billion.</p>

Interestingly, iOS appears most popular in Singapore and Australia, where it accounts for 9.98 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively, of all Web browsing traffic&#8211;quite a bit more than it claims in the United Sates, where it accounts for just 3.4 percent. IOS is the third-largest source of global browsing traffic after Mac OS (5.25 percent) and Windows (89.7 percent). Google&#8217;s Android OS is the sixth, with .49 percent.<br />

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1863" title="AppleTenBillion" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/AppleTenBillion-275x154.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="154" />The App Store is now roughly two-and-a-half years old and offers software for a number of categories in 90 countries, ranging from games, news, sports, health, reference and travel.</p>
<p>Apple took advantage of today&#8217;s milestone to highlight several new figures: In addition to revealing that it now has 160 million iOS users in the world, it said there are more than 350,000 applications in the App Store that are accessible to users in 90 countries. Of that application base, there are more than 60,000 apps available for the iPad.</p>
<p>&#8220;The App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing in a release. “While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”</p>
<p>Apple said the 10 billionth app downloaded was &#8220;Paper Glider,&#8221; which was purchased by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, in the U.K. Davis will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card.</p>
<p>As a point of reference, Apple said in September 2009 that there were 50 million iPod and iPhone users, making the 160 million number announced today fairly significant.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/sjgrins-275x235.png" alt="" title="sjgrins" width="275" height="235" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1702" />Research houses Gartner and IDC are both out with their market reports on PC sales for the fourth quarter and the full year of 2010. Both say the market was weak, and both are citing the same reason: Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>One interesting revelation is that both Hewlett-Packard and Acer, the top two vendors by volume in the Gartner survey, saw their shipments <em>decline</em> year-on-year in a period where the rest of the industry was seeing growth, albeit slower than had been previously expected.</p>
<p>Hewlett-Packard maintained its market lead, with a share of about 18 percent worldwide, and 29 percent in the U.S. Acer came in second. Both saw their unit volumes decline. For HP, that translated to a decline of more than 200,000 units in fourth-quarter PC sales, or a little more than 1 percent. For Acer, which had hitched its wagon to the netbook craze a few years ago, it translated to a decline of nearly 2 percent, or more than 222,000 units. Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba all saw their shipments grow, with Lenovo leading the pack, growing a healthy 21 percent.</p>

<p>Gartner says that worldwide shipments totaled 93.5 million units in the fourth quarter, which amounted to growth of only 3 percent over the same period a year earlier, falling short of the 5 percent growth it had previously forecast. Gartner Analyst Mikako Kitagawa blames the iPad and other media tablets for the slackening growth. She says the industry’s one bright spot, oddly enough, is in enterprise, where companies are upgrading the machines they issue their employees. For the full year, the worldwide PC industry recovered from the recession, growing nearly 14 percent to 308 million units.</p>

<p>Apple remained in fifth place in the U.S. with a share of market just shy of 10 percent, and less than a percentage point behind Toshiba. Notably, this figure doesn&#8217;t include iPads, which hit a combined 7.5 million units in Apple&#8217;s third and fourth fiscal quarters, both of which ended before the holiday season. (Apple will reports earnings for its first fiscal quarter, which includes the holiday season, next week.)</p>
<p>IDC&#8217;s survey found the same trend, but it differed from the Gartner survey on a few key points. IDC put Dell in second place, behind HP and ahead of Acer in the worldwide market share race. I’ll attribute this to differences in methodology, since Gartner and IDC differ a little in how they count.</p>

<p>Another interesting note is that IDC paints a more negative picture of Acer, pegging its decline in fourth-quarter sales at 15 percent from 2009 to 2010. I asked IDC analyst Loren Loverde about the difference in IDC&#8217;s results versus Gartner&#8217;s, and he said part of it comes from differences in methodology, but also from the fact that Acer is closely held and so is a tricky company to track, and the data it does disclose isn&#8217;t as detailed as the other companies&#8217;.</p>
<p>But Loverde also says decline, whether 2 percent or 15 percent, reflects a stark business reality for Acer. The road to PC growth through mini-notebooks and geographic expansion is closed. It was a good strategy while it lasted.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/stackobills-275x300.jpg" alt="" title="stackobills" width="275" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1031" />Research firm Gartner has released its latest forecast for worldwide IT spending in the coming year, and at first glance it looks like good news for tech companies across the board.</p>
<p>The good news is that Gartner has <a href="http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1513614">revised its outlook upward</a>. Companies and governments will spend $3.6 trillion on IT this year, which is more than the prior $3.4 trillion forecast, amounting to growth of 5.1 percent. Sounds great, right?</p>
<p>Yes, but it&#8217;s complicated, especially from the U.S. point of view. The weak dollar makes the figures look a little better than they are. In 2010, Gartner says, IT spending grew 2.2 percent, but more than half of that&#8211;1.6 percent&#8211;can be attributed to the devaluation of the dollar against other currencies. Companies and governments spending other currencies can get more dollars for their money, and so this tends to inflate the appearance of growth, Gartner&#8217;s Richard Gordon told me.</p>
<p>A weak dollar is generally good news for U.S. companies that do a lot of global business. U.S. products and services look more attractive to non-U.S. buyers. But in cases like this, U.S. companies end up paying more for items that get imported and for raw materials.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not to say there isn&#8217;t actual growth. Gartner says spending is picking up fastest on telecom equipment, with computing hardware and enterprise software following close behind.</p>
<p>Spending on discretionary items like IT services and consulting is coming back the slowest. When the economic crisis hit in late 2008 and early 2009 these were the first items on the chopping block, and spending on them is only now beginning to make a comeback.</p>

<p>Yesterday morning, the pair of Stanford University graduate students who made the hot news-reading iPad app, Pulse News Reader, were ecstatic to be mentioned first&#8211;for being among the most promising developers for the new tablet device&#8211;by Apple CEO Steve Jobs in his keynote speech at the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100607/kara-walt-katie-visit-iphone-4-palooza-with-special-guest-stars-schiller-pincus-and-more/">Worldwide Developers Conference</a> in San Francisco.</p>
<p>But by the afternoon, that flush of entrepreneurial success had turned sour, after Apple (AAPL) informed the two that Pulse was being pulled from the App Store after it received a written notice from the New York Times Company (NYT) declaring that &#8220;The New York Times Company believes your application named &#8216;Pulse News Reader&#8217; infringes The New York Times Company&#8217;s rights.&#8221;</p>
<p>In an unusual coincidence, the Times Web site was on prominent display on a huge screenshot of the iPad during Jobs&#8217;s speech.</p>
<p>Ironically, <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/01/the-ipad-pulse-reader-scales-the-charts/">the Times wrote a big wet kiss</a> about Pulse last week in a blog post titled &#8220;The iPad Pulse Reader Scales the Charts,&#8221; by tech writer Brad Stone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Pulse is a stylish and easy-to-use news aggregator,&#8221; wrote Stone. &#8220;News organizations still puzzling over their iPad strategies can perhaps derive some hope from Pulse&#8217;s success&#8211;or at least its price tag.&#8221;</p>
<p>No longer. Pulse was down completely by 6:30 pm PT last night.</p>
<p>Reads a notice on iTunes now: &#8220;Your request could not be completed. The item you&#8217;ve requested is not currently available in the U.S. store.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t blame Apple, because they have to respond when contacted by lawyers from the Times,&#8221; said Akshay Kothari, a 23-year-old student of well-known Silicon Valley investor Michael Dearing&#8217;s Launch Pad class at Stanford, of the letter the media giant sent to Apple (which is below, along with the take-down notice).</p>
<p>&#8220;But it was definitely a roller coaster of a day.&#8221;</p>
<p>In fact, it has been all up for the past four weeks, since Kothari and 22-year-old Ankit Gupta released the Pulse iPad app, creating it for the class, which requires students to develop and put out a product.</p>
<p>Both are at Stanford&#8217;s Institute of Design and created a company called <a href="http://www.alphonsolabs.com/">Alphonso Labs</a>.</p>
<p>The app was quickly approved after about four weeks of development. Since then, it has taken off strongly, downloaded 35,000 times at a $4 price tag, even rising to No. 1 in paid apps several times, as noted prominently in the lead of the Times story.</p>
<p>Kothari said that the pair plan to contact Apple in the morning and take steps to remove Times material from the feeds.</p>
<p>It is not immediately clear why they need to, since Pulse draws from publicly available Times RSS feeds, as do many other apps, and does no scraping.</p>
<p>In fact, Pulse is little more than a really well-designed RSS reader, which is what the Times said it was in its write-up. You add feeds to it and it visualizes them in a way that&#8217;s easy to get through.</p>
<p>The Times story did have one ominous-in-retrospect note about Pulse: &#8220;It also lets people easily share articles through Twitter and Facebook&#8211;bypassing the individual sharing tools presented by each news site.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Pulse is pretty basic and is similar to many others readers.</p>
<p>In the New York Times case, as with others, one view is plain text and only shows whatever the Times puts in its RSS feed, which isn&#8217;t much. And its Web view seems to be just an in-app browser that takes you straight to the page that is in the link with the RSS feed.</p>

<p>The Times lawyer, Richard Samson, sees it differently, apparently, since it is a paid app rather than a free one, noting in the Times June 3 notice to Apple, which came two days after the newspaper&#8217;s article about Pulse:</p>
<p>&#8220;The Pulse News Reader app, makes commercial use of the NYTimes.com and Boston.com RSS feeds, in violation of their Terms of Use*. Thus, the use of our content is unlicensed. The app also frames the NYTimes.com and Boston.com websites in violation of their respective Terms of Use.&#8221;</p>
<p>Samson also complained about how Pulse was marketed in the App Store, a screenshot of which you can see below:</p>

According to new research from Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Katy Huberty, growth in U.S. netbook sales has been declining since January, the month during which Apple (AAPL) officially announced its much anticipated slate device.</p>
<p>&#8220;US consumer PC, and especially notebook, growth decelerated in January when Apple introduced the iPad and again in April when the iPad launched,&#8221; Huberty wrote in a note to clients this morning. &#8220;Given the corresponding increase in ASPs in the market, we believe much of the demand shortfall came from netbooks and low-cost notebooks.&#8221;</p>
<p>Adding detail, Huberty writes, &#8220;What’s more, US retail netbook unit growth decelerated to about 5 percent YoY in April from 25 percent in March and 53 percent in February, according to NPD.&#8221;</p>
<p>Quite a change from <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr2010/tc2010041_600018.htm">the first quarter of 2009, when netbook sales leapt 872 percent</a> and market researchers were projecting that they would capture a big share of the worldwide market for the year at the laptop&#8217;s expense. </p>
<p>Clearly things have changed quite a bit since then, and while there are surely other factors at work here&#8211;a saturated market, perhaps (clearly 872 percent growth isn&#8217;t sustainable) and the debut of Windows 7&#8211;it’s tough not to look at the chart below (click to enlarge) and conclude that consumers in the market for netbooks just might be reappraising their needs in light of the emergence of the iPad. But whether that is the driving factor in the slowing growth of U.S. netbook sales is clearly an open question.</p>

<p>One final point worth making here: Apple itself is not immune from cannibalization at the hands of the iPad. According to Huberty, the device may soon begin to eat into sales of the iPod touch as well.<br />

<p>&#8220;This Saturday the iPad arrives and we believe it&#8217;s going to rule the world,&#8221; said KPCB partner John Doerr. &#8220;I’ve touched it, I&#8217;ve carressed it and I hope to sleep with it this Saturday night. It feels gorgeous. It isn’t a big iPhone, but it is a big deal. It&#8217;s the future&#8230;.We’re heading into a brave new world. From our old interfaces to touch. From WYSIWYG&#8211;what you see is what you get&#8211;to WYTIWIS &#8216;what you touch is what is.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>A number of apps built by iFund companies will be available when the iPad launches this Saturday, among them seven games from ngmoco, as well as Doodle Buddy and Star Smash from Pinger, textPlus from GOGII and Shazam from Shazam Entertainment. Not announced today but headed to market soon: iPad apps from Zynga, Shopkick and Cooliris.</p>

<p>MENLO PARK, Calif., March 31, 2010 – Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers (KPCB) today announced the doubling of its iFund to $200 million of venture capital for applications for Apple&#8217;s revolutionary iPhone OS family of products, including iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Established in 2008 as a $100 million investment pool, the original iFund is now fully committed across 14 companies. iFund companies have been supported by an additional $330 million from follow-on investors.</p>
<p>KPCB also announced iFund-supported companies have more than 20 applications in development for the soon-to-be-released iPad, with 11 available at first ship on April 3. KPCB noted the iPhone has created an inflection in mobile content consumption and the iPad will lead the next wave of innovation in mobile computing. The iFund is increasing its investment dollars to back entrepreneurs and build companies that focus on these areas. Particular areas of interest on iPad include entertainment, communication, social networking, commerce, health care, and education.  </p>
<p>&#8220;Welcome to the brave new post-PC era where a swoosh of fluidity replaces the traditional mouse-bound GUI. A new, truly revolutionary platform is rare, and a prize for entrepreneurs,&#8221; said John Doerr, KPCB Partner. &#8220;We expect all ventures to have an iPad strategy. We will fund many more ventures for iPad, and the iFund will accelerate their success.&#8221;</p>

Though January is typically a weak month, global semiconductor sales rose slightly thanks to solid demand for personal computers, cellphones and other consumer electronics. Chip sales were up 0.3 percent in January from the previous month and up 47 percent year-over-year (see chart below; click to enlarge).</p>

<p>The chip industry&#8217;s Great Dark Times seem to be over.</p>
<p>“Worldwide semiconductor sales in January increased significantly compared to one year ago, reflecting today’s improving business environment for the industry,” <a href="http://www.sia-online.org/cs/papers_publications/press_release_detail?pressrelease.id=1715">SIA President George Scalise said in a statement</a>. “January and February of 2009 were the low point of the industry downturn as the semiconductor industry and electronics manufacturers quickly responded to the global economic recession.”</p>
<p>Should the upward trend the SIA charted in January continue, the industry could see growth beyond its November forecast of $242.1 billion.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/02/getsmart-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="getsmart" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-34340" />The fourth quarter was a record one for smartphone sales. <a href="http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS22196610">Research firm IDC reports</a> that the industry shipped 54.5 million of the devices during the period. That&#8217;s a 39 percent increase year-over-year and one that benefited most top smartphone peddlers, particularly Apple. </p>
<p>The company shipped 8.7 million iPhones in Q4, up from 4.4 million a year ago, for a whopping 97.7 percent in year-over-year growth. With a 14.4 percent share of the worldwide smartphone market, Apple (AAPL) is now the No. 3 maker in the world, behind Nokia (NOK) and Research in Motion (RIMM), which hold 38.9 percent and 19.8 percent of the market, respectively (see table below; click to enlarge).</p>

<p>But it’s becoming increasingly difficult for Nokia and RIM to maintain their leads. Though it shipped 10.7 million BlackBerrys in the fourth quarter&#8211;a nice increase from about 7.6 million&#8211;RIM&#8217;s market share for the period remained nearly flat at 19.6 percent. Meanwhile, market leader Nokia saw its share drop slightly to 38.2 percent from 40 percent in 2008, even though it shipped 20.8 million phones during the quarter, one third more than in the prior year.</p>
<p>So, 97.7 percent growth for smartphone upstart Apple and 37.7 percent growth for Nokia, the undisputed smartphone leader worldwide. Quite a disparity.  </p>

Impressive gains by any measure. Interesting to learn, then, that the device actually lost market share.</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/02/01/iphone-loses-market-share-in-fourth-quarter/">According to ABI Research</a>, the iPhone&#8217;s share of the worldwide smartphone market in Q4 2009 slipped to 16.6 percent from 18.1 percent in the previous quarter. </p>
<p>Now, while it&#8217;s certainly ironic to lose market share in a record quarter, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.</p>
<p>First, counting units sold is just one measure of a device’s success at market. Another measure worth considering is profits relative to revenue. And <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090804/iphone-claims-32-percent-of-handset-industry-operating-profits/">according to some analysis we’ve discussed here before</a>, Apple (AAPL) claims an inordinate share of the handset industry’s profits.   </p>
<p>Second, iPhone sales typically spike in the third quarter&#8211;the first full quarter after the latest iPhone launch (in this case, the 3G S), and then taper off slightly after that. They did so after the 3G debuted, and they’ll almost certainly do so again when the company launches the device’s next iteration. </p>
<p>Finally, the fact that Apple has managed to claim 16.6 percent of a market in which it had no presence whatsoever three years ago and that it did so with a single device is astonishing.</p>
<p>So, does loss of market share signify the beginning of a decline in the iPhone’s popularity or the profits it generates for Apple? Not likely.</p>

Worldwide sales of semiconductors in October rose 5.1 percent over September, racking up their eighth month of consecutive gains, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. At  $21.7 billion, October sales were down 3.5 percent year-over-year, by far the smallest decline of 2009. </p>
<p>&#8220;As semiconductor sales are increasingly driven by the performance of the overall global economy, our sales are reflecting the improved economic conditions in our world markets,&#8221; said SIA President George Scalise. &#8220;Sales increased sequentially in all geographic regions.&#8221;</p>
<p>Chip makers have kept inventories lean, and the holiday ramp-up in production could be extended by a few weeks,  Scalise added.</p>
<p>Great news, coming as it does after the chip industry’s seemingly endless procession of bad. The semiconductor sector is typically among the first industries to recover ahead of a broader market turnaround. This latest report suggests we may be at the beginning of just that or at least at an inflection point where the uncertainty in consumer and enterprise technology markets that’s been such a drag on the industry begins to abate.</p>

Munster sees Apple (AAPL) beating the Street’s estimates thanks to increased sales of both Macs and iPhones.</p>
<p>As the analyst notes, NPD data for the first two months of the September quarter show Mac sales up about seven percent year over year. iPhone sales are even more robust.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our checks indicate that worldwide demand for the iPhone 3GS is outstripping supply,&#8221; Munster writes. “This strong level of demand, we believe, will support unit sell-through of about 7.5m units in the Sept. quarter.&#8221;</p>
<p>Continuing, Munster notes that &#8220;PJC Wireless Analyst Mike Walkley&#8217;s checks for the first two months of the Sept. quarter indicated constraints at retail for the iPhone 3GS. We have also seen signs of constraints in international markets. Media reports indicate that the CEO of wireless carrier 3 Italia indicated that the company is selling 20k iPhones per month, but could sell more than double that amount if it had adequate supply.&#8221;</p>
<p>If this is problem, Munster asserts, it&#8217;s a fleeting one: &#8220;While supply constraint is a issue near-term, we see it as a long term positive, as worldwide demand appears to be very strong for the iPhone 3GS.&#8221;</p>
<p>In quarters past, Apple has guided revenue four percent below Street expectations on average and earnings-per-share 12 percent below Street expectations. But the company&#8217;s actual results have typically beaten those estimates by an average of three percent on revenue and by 24 percent on earnings per share. Munster expects this to be the case again when Apple reports earnings on Monday.</p>
<p>Over at RBC Capital Markets, analyst Mike Abramsky sees Apple’s forthcoming earnings report playing out in much the same way for largely the same reasons. &#8220;Checks show that the iPhone 3GS is the most popular Smartphone at AT&#038;T and other global carriers (e.g., O2 UK, Rogers),&#8221; he wrote in a note to investors today.</p>
<p>&#8220;Despite launch in June,&#8221; Abramsky added, &#8220;some models of the iPhone 3GS were stocked out at Apple retail stores and carrier stores through Q4; however, checks show retail availability appears to have improved early September. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Looks like I called this one wrong: Earlier in the day, I predicted that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090707/is-the-internet-ready-for-michael-jacksons-funeral/">Web interest in Michael Jackson&#8217;s funeral/memorial would be less than expected</a> because anyone who really cared about this would be watching on TV.</p>
<p>Nope.</p>
<p>Check out these snapshots of Akamai&#8217;s <a href="http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/dataviz3.html">live traffic meters</a>, which I took shortly after 1 pm EDT. They indicate that the Web infrastructure company&#8217;s clients are serving up more than 109 million customers per minute&#8211;more than they have at any other period this year, including Barack Obama&#8217;s inauguration.</p>
<p>Akamai (AKAM) doesn&#8217;t represent all of the Web, but since it&#8217;s by far the biggest content delivery network service, it&#8217;s a pretty darn good proxy. The previous record appears to have been 90.6 million, set last month during the Iranian elections (click to enlarge):</p>

<p>UPDATE: The Akamai folks want me to note that this chart measures overall Web traffic, not just traffic to news sites, etc. Which means that there could be other factors pushing up traffic today &#8212; large software downloads, etc. And, for that matter, if you look at Akamai&#8217;s peak traffic days over the last year, you&#8217;ll note that they&#8217;ve increased nearly every month. So while we can say that Akamai&#8217;s was serving more Internet traffic at 1pm eastern time than it has at anytime in the last year, we can&#8217;t draw a straight line between that fact and the fact that Jackson event was happening at the same time. But I&#8217;m going to go ahead and draw a dotted line.</p>
<p>UPDATE 2: Now I see why the Akamai folks were so cautious. New stats indicate that the event was big on the Web, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090707/michael-jacksons-last-performance-big-but-not-obama-big/">but not as big as the Obama inauguration</a>.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, while I didn&#8217;t actually go ahead and write this, my hunch was that any Web traffic we did see today might come from countries outside the U.S. that either didn&#8217;t get a TV feed or that cared about Jackson much more than Americans did.</p>
<p>But Akamai&#8217;s <a href="http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/nui/news/index.html">visualization of traffic to news sites world-wide</a> says I would have been wrong about that, too: Almost all of the traffic is being served up by American news sites, and traffic to sites around the world is down for this time of day.</p>

The souring economy and related uncertainty in consumer and enterprise technology markets continue to drag the chip sector into the mud. While <a href="http://www.sia-online.org/cs/papers_publications/press_release_detail?pressrelease.id=1587">world-wide sales of semiconductors in March</a> rose 3.3 percent from February, they were down nearly 30 percent from last year, the Semiconductor Industry Association said in a report today.</p>
<p>Another ugly SIA metric in <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/tag/semiconductor-industry-association/">a parade of them</a>, though optimists will say that slight uptick in March is a sign that the industry has finally found a bottom from which to scramble upward. &#8220;The modest sequential rebound in worldwide sales in March suggests that demand has stabilized somewhat, albeit at substantially lower levels than last year,&#8221; SIA President George Scalise said in the report. &#8220;While all major product sectors showed month-on-month growth, there continues to be limited visibility in end markets. There are some bright spots such as ‘smart phones’ and ‘netbook’ PCs, but there are no clear signs of early firming of demand in other major end markets such as automotive, corporate information technology, and consumer electronics.”</p>
<p>So, perhaps we’re not on our way to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090102/chips-dip/">the depths plumbed back in 2001-2002</a>. And perhaps we are. The SIA doesn’t quite seem to know.</p>

He says it&#8217;s an incredibly exciting time for Apple (AAPL), and offers a quick overview of Apple&#8217;s new retail stores. &#8220;Each and every week some 3.4 million customers visit Apple Stores worldwide,&#8221; says Schiller, who notes a resurgence in interest in the Mac. Says Schiller: This year&#8217;s Macworld will be all about the Mac. I&#8217;ve got three new things to tell you about.</p>

<p>The first: iLife &#8217;09. iPhoto now offers a new feature called Faces, which categorizes photos by faces. The software uses a technology called &#8220;face detection&#8221; to ID the subjects of photos. It asks you to identify the subjects first and then scans the remainder of your photos; using face recognition, it identifies other photos in which those subjects appear.</p>
<p>Another new iPhoto feature: Places. It does the obvious. Using the GPS geotagging built into newer cameras and &#8220;the best cellphone in the world,&#8221; iPhoto identifies the location at which photos were taken and categorizes them accordingly. What about photos that don&#8217;t include those geotags? Manual entry solves that problem with a little help from Google Maps.</p>
<p>Apple has also added Facebook and Flickr support to iPhoto. Set up your accounts in iPhoto and the software will automatically send your photos to those services and allow your Facebook friends to tag them if you so choose. Beyond these features, iPhoto includes a slick new slideshow and book themes.</p>
