				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i2.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2012/11/xbox_380.png?resize=380%2C285" alt="xbox_380" class="alignright size-full wp-image-268193" data-recalc-dims="1" />Even though its new flagship console is on the way, the Xbox 360 is getting a facelift and some new features, Microsoft said at its E3 Media Briefing today in Los Angeles.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re gonna update the Xbox 360 console with a modern look and feel based on the Xbox One design,&#8221; said marketing and strategy CVP Yusuf Mehdi.</p>
<p>Indeed, the redesign makes the whiter 360 look very similar to the black Xbox One, which Microsoft unveiled last month at its campus in Washington state. The new hardware is available to buy, starting today, Mehdi said.</p>
<p>Also included in the hardware refresh is a new incentive for gamers to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold now, rather than waiting for the next-gen console: Two free games per month, starting with Assassins Creed 2 and Halo 3. Mehdi also promised that &#8220;hundreds of new games&#8221; are still on the way for the Xbox 360.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i0.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/05/COD-GhostsSomethings-Burning-380x237.jpg?resize=380%2C237" alt="COD GhostsSomethings Burning" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-324135" data-recalc-dims="1" />Games were <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130521/and-microsofts-new-console-is-called-xbox-one/">given second billing</a> at Microsoft&#8217;s Xbox One unveiling yesterday, but one of the coolest new features of the new console is only for games: Xbox One will be a social-media-ready DVR for gameplay video recaps.</p>
<p>Which means, in a nutshell, that developers will be able to tell their games to automatically record certain types of in-game events and achievements. For example, that amazing headshot you just made in Call of Duty: Ghosts? It will be auto-captured in all its gory detail, packaged and ready to send to your online friends.</p>
<p>Which friends, specifically? Marketing and strategy CVP Yusuf Mehdi declined to name names just yet, but said it will be possible to use a dedicated button on the Xbox One controller to upload videos to &#8220;popular sharing sites.&#8221;</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t an entirely new phenomenon. Back in April, I wrote about how <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130409/playing-to-the-crowd-gamecasting-goes-mainstream/">&#8220;gamecasting&#8221; is already poised to become a big deal for mainstream gamers</a>. YouTube and game-video site Twitch are arming developers with tools that will let them put video recording and sharing functionality directly in their games.</p>
<p>And, of course, Sony announced way back in February that the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130220/sony-looks-beyond-the-box-with-new-playstation-4/">PlayStation 4 would also let players snip and share their gameplay videos</a> to live video site Ustream.</p>
<p>But Microsoft isn&#8217;t trying to reinvent the social gaming wheel; the company just wants to make it easier. With most games right now, you need additional hardware and software to broadcast a live multiplayer game or record yourself playing through a single-player campaign.</p>
<p>Lowering those mainstream-unfriendly hurdles means that a lot of players who just want to brag about their latest achievements will be inadvertently producing free commercials for games with their socially shared videos.</p>
<p>A Twitch spokesperson declined to comment when asked whether Xbox videos would be shareable to the gaming-oriented site. Ustream spokesperson Joellen Ferrer said, &#8220;We were not part of this latest announcement, [but] we aim to provide a ubiquitous experience across all platforms and will continue to push these conversations to provide the best experiences for users.&#8221;</p>

<p>The problem with that plan: The cable guy already controls your living room. He&#8217;s not leaving anytime soon.</p>
<p>So, despite what you may have read yesterday, the new Xbox One isn&#8217;t TV&#8217;s future, today.</p>
<p>If you squint at it, you can imagine that Xbox One can help Microsoft dislodge the cable guy one day. But, for now, Microsoft is simply trying to take up a little more space. More precisely: Its box won&#8217;t let you watch live TV unless you have a pay TV subscription.</p>
<p>This shouldn&#8217;t be a surprise, as Microsoft has already signaled for some time that it wants to work with the pay TV guys, not boot them out.</p>
<p>Its previous forays into moving TV to the Xbox, via deals with programmers like ESPN and HBO, have only worked for customers who already had pay TV. And while Microsoft has previously mulled creating its own TV service, it has shelved the idea, and insists that it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130211/microsoft-talks-up-xbox-360-while-staying-mum-on-its-successor/">doesn&#8217;t want to build a pay TV competitor</a>.</p>
<p>Related: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130220/intel-inside-your-tv-the-chip-guys-want-to-become-cable-guys/">With the exception of Intel</a>, every big outsider that has approached the TV Industrial Complex has reached the same conclusion. Which is why <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130409/google-brings-internet-of-the-future-tv-of-the-past-to-austin/">Google Fiber TV looks just like regular cable TV</a>, and why Apple TV has yet to do much more than play Netflix and iTunes.</p>
<p><a href="http://i0.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/05/microsoft-xbox-one-tv.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-324273" alt="microsoft xbox one tv" src="http://i0.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/05/microsoft-xbox-one-tv-380x207.jpg?resize=380%2C207" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a>And Microsoft will be literally tied to cable. In order to get the TV part of Xbox One to work, you&#8217;ll end up plugging it into your existing cable box, and performing what the industry calls an &#8220;HDMI pass-through.&#8221;</p>
<p>[CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that Xbox One owners would need an additional piece of hardware to connect their machines with their set-top boxes.]</p>
<p>In essence, Xbox One is acting as a sort of custom remote for your cable box, which will let you change the channel; it is also creating its own programming guide so you can see what&#8217;s on TV.</p>
<p>But note that Xbox One won&#8217;t give you <em>full</em> control of the set-top box &#8212; you won&#8217;t have access to the DVR your cable company provides, or any video-on-demand features they offer. If you want to do any of that, you&#8217;ll have to switch inputs, and go back to the cable guy&#8217;s system.</p>
<p>[UPDATE: As All Things D reader "<a href="http://dthin.gs/11aNBGa">Taz</a>" notes, Comcast, the country's biggest pay TV company, already provides Xbox 360 users to their video on demand service via an app, and suggests that the company could do the same with the Xbox One. That's true, but so far the two companies don't have an agreement in place.]</p>
<p>And beyond the technical arrangements, Microsoft is being as explicit as it can about the goodwill it has toward the cable guys. While the company&#8217;s <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xboxone/meet-xbox-one?xr=shellnav">marketing</a> says its box can do everything, Microsoft&#8217;s official communications and fine print make it clear that it can&#8217;t do squat &#8212; TV-wise &#8212; without the TV Industrial Complex.</p>
<p><a href="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/05/microsoft-xbox-one-tv-2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-324288" alt="microsoft xbox one tv 2" src="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/05/microsoft-xbox-one-tv-2-380x276.jpg?resize=380%2C276" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a>Here, for instance, is a response I got from a Microsoft PR rep when I asked about the Xbox One&#8217;s program guide, and whether they needed permission from the cable guys to build it:</p>
<p>&#8220;Information that appears in the OneGuide has been created and licensed by Xbox, and works in conjunction with video services that consumers subscribe to from cable and satellite companies. We value our partnerships with MVPDs (pay TV operators), and our vision is for Xbox One to work in tandem with MVPDs&#8217; services and offer a unique and interactive experience on top of your favorite entertainment.&#8221;</p>
<p>Got that? &#8220;In conjunction&#8221; &#8230; &#8220;in tandem&#8221; &#8230; &#8220;on top of.&#8221; Pretty clear.</p>
<p>What is interesting is that, as far as I can tell, Microsoft hasn&#8217;t gotten the explicit blessing from all of the pay TV services to launch the Xbox One. It seems to have told some, but not all, of the TV guys about it in advance, but in any case doesn&#8217;t think it needs their permission.</p>
<p>In an interview with my colleague Eric Johnson on Tuesday, Microsoft entertainment boss Yusuf Mehdi said Microsoft would be reaching out to the TV guys to get additional features, like DVR recording and playback. And if Microsoft continues with that kind of tight partnership, then the cable guys won&#8217;t be leaving your house for a long time.</p>
<p>That said, if Xbox One really does become the primary way you watch video programming &#8212; not just live TV but video, period &#8212; then it&#8217;s possible to imagine a scenario where Microsoft, with an improved bargaining position, starts trying to push the cable guys closer to the door.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t count on it happening any time soon, though. Those dudes are hard to move.</p>

<p>So what does Microsoft plan to do when it replaces its own gaming console? We asked Xbox head Yusuf Mehdi when he stopped by the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/category/dive-into-media/"><strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong> conference</a> last week, along with Nancy Tellem, the former CBS executive hired to build up Xbox&#8217;s video business.</p>
<p>You can see what they had to say below, in the full-length version of their interview. Warning: Neither Mehdi or Tellem wanted to spill much (then again, they didn&#8217;t promise a &#8220;launch&#8221; event, so you can&#8217;t blame them).</p>
<p>But you can read between the lines and get a sense of where they&#8217;re headed: While lots of people are interested in lightweight casual games and low-cost machines that can play them, Microsoft seems committed to the idea of a heavy-duty machine with lots of proprietary bells and whistles. So you shouldn&#8217;t expect an Apple TV-sized box, for instance.</p>
<p>Tellem, who is building a full-fledged studio in L.A. to create shows, series and events for Xbox, is noncommittal as well (likely because she is still figuring it out). But she is talking about the same kinds of ideas: Video that isn&#8217;t just proprietary to Xbox, but that takes advantage of the device&#8217;s hardware and processing power. Assume that once she gets going, for instance, she&#8217;ll create stuff that takes advantage of Microsoft&#8217;s Kinect motion sensors.</p>
<p>One big difference between Sony and Microsoft is the way the two companies are positioning their machines: While Sony&#8217;s customers spend plenty of time streaming video on the PS3 (they log <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121204/watching-netflix-on-a-big-screen-youre-probably-on-a-ps3/">more Netflix hours than Xbox users</a>), Microsoft is much more explicit about using the Xbox as an entertainment device, period.</p>
<p>Which is why it&#8217;s interesting that Microsoft has decided, at least for now, not to go ahead and simply become a pay-TV provider, like <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130220/intel-inside-your-tv-the-chip-guys-want-to-become-cable-guys/?refcat=diveintomedia">Intel says it will do this year</a>.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Xbox 360 has been the bestselling videogame console in the U.S. every month for more than two years.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-268193" alt="xbox_380" src="http://i2.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2012/11/xbox_380.png?resize=380%2C285" data-recalc-dims="1" />There&#8217;s no doubt about it&#8217;s strength in the U.S., but internationally, it&#8217;s not so clear how the seven-year old game console is faring, especially in comparison to Sony&#8217;s PlayStation. </p>
<p>Microsoft sold 281,000 Xbox 360 units in January, up 4.1 percent from 270,000 a year ago, according to the NPD Group, which tracks sales of video-game software, hardware and accessories in the U.S. that occur at retail.</p>
<p>Earlier this week at <strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong>, Yusuf Mehdi, who leads Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130211/xbox-by-the-numbers-76m-devices-and-theyre-not-all-used-by-dudes/">also provided an update</a> based on internal data.</p>
<p>He said the overall Xbox installed base is now at 76 million, up from 70 million at the end of September of last year. Also, 24 million Kinects have been sold, up from 20 million last year, and there are 46 million Xbox Live accounts, up from 40 million.</p>
<p>Sales continue to be brisk because the company has been successful at moving beyond a hard-core gaming audience to serve members of the family who like other forms of entertainment, such as streaming video or music.</p>
<p>But the rivalry between the different console makers is particularly intense right now as the industry waits for the next-generation devices to launch.</p>
<p>The Nintendo Wii U was the first to launch this holiday season, but has had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130130/nintendo-slashes-sales-outlook-for-wii-u/">a relatively lackluster performance</a>. Next week, Sony is planning to unveil its new home videogame console at an event in New York. But Microsoft has remained mum on its plans for any potential Xbox 720. Earlier this week, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130211/microsoft-talks-up-xbox-360-while-staying-mum-on-its-successor/">Mehdi refused to budge on the subject</a>. “I’ll politely decline any comment,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>So, the question is, will Sony&#8217;s PlayStation 4 be well received?</p>
<p>If global trends are any indication, it&#8217;s possible. Based on numbers culled from the three company&#8217;s earnings reports, <a href="http://www.geekwire.com/2013/official-playstation-atop-console-market/">Geekwire was able to determine</a> that the PlayStation 3 was the best-selling home console worldwide during the holidays.</p>
<p>Sales of the PS2 and PS3 totaled 6.8 million units for the December quarter to beat the number of Nintendo Wii and Wii U units sold (5.3 million), and the number of units reported by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 (5.9 million).</p>
<p>For the full year, the two PlayStation devices together sold 15.6 million units worldwide, compared with 8 million for Nintendo and about 11 million for the Xbox 360.</p>
<p>In other words, Sony continues to have a very strong worldwide presence for the PlayStation, compared to the Xbox which seems to dominate in the U.S.</p>
<p>Overall, however, the hardware sector remains fairly weak. Most executives in the videogame industry believe a new wave of hardware is needed to spur consumer interest again, while others believe that gamers are less attached to the living room than they were before and prefer gaming wherever they are from their phone or tablet.</p>
<p>NPD reported that sales of hardware in January were down 17 percent year over year when taking into account that the month had five weeks instead of four.</p>

<p>&#8220;All I&#8217;ll say about our current and future investment is [that it is] about doing things that are big and premium,&#8221; said Yusuf Mehdi, head of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, speaking at <strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong>. &#8220;Other people will try some lower-end things; what we will do is things that are big and beautiful.&#8221;</p>
<p>The goal, Mehdi said, is to have premium content, voice control, and to be able to do things you have never done before.</p>
<p>On the premium content front, Microsoft is once again dabbling in producing original material. Former CBS executive Nancy Tellem talked about the 125-person production studio Microsoft has opened in Santa Monica with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130211/microsoft-fancies-itself-a-content-producer-again/">goal of having its first fruits land in the living room later this year</a>.</p>
<p>On the distribution front, Mehdi said that the company isn&#8217;t looking to compete with cable TV and satellite, but instead intends to be a good partner with those companies. (Microsoft does have a separate TV software business that powers services such as AT&#038;T&#8217;s U-verse.)</p>
<p>Mehdi also rattled off a series of new statistics on how well the current console &#8212; which has been on the market since 2006 &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130211/xbox-by-the-numbers-76m-devices-and-theyre-not-all-used-by-dudes/">continues to do</a>.</p>
<p>As for any details on the rumored Xbox 720, Mehdi refused to budge. &#8220;I&#8217;ll politely decline any comment.&#8221;</p>

<p>Pressed by interviewer Peter Kafka on why Microsoft needs to make content versus just partnering with studios, Tellem &#8212; formerly president of the CBS Network Television Entertainment Group &#8212; said that Microsoft has a unique opportunity to make content that is interactive rather than linear.</p>
<p>&#8220;Particularly when you are looking at the younger demographic,&#8221; Tellem said, &#8220;interactivity is a natural extension of what they do.&#8221;</p>
<p>The content could be 10 minutes or an hour and a half, Tellem said.</p>
<p>Microsoft-created content is likely to be part of the company&#8217;s existing paid Xbox Live subscription service.</p>
<p>So, when are we going to see this content?, Kafka asked.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good question,&#8221; Tellem said.</p>
<p>This year?</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m hoping,&#8221; she said.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even though it is seven years old, Microsoft&#8217;s Xbox 360 still sells millions per year.</p>
<p><a href="http://i2.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/YusufMehdi.jpg"><img src="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/YusufMehdi-380x253.jpg?resize=380%2C253" alt="YusufMehdi" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-293832" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a>The Xbox installed base is now 76 million, up from 70 million at the end of September of last year, said Yusuf Mehdi, who leads Microsoft&#8217;s interactive entertainment business, speaking at <strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong> this afternoon.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to Mehdi and company that Xbox isn&#8217;t just perceived as a hard-core gaming device. He offered some usage numbers to combat that assumption: 38 percent of Xbox users are women, and more than 51 percent are people who have kids.</p>
<p>U.S. Xbox account holders use the devices for 87 hours per month. As of last March, non-game usage &#8212; fitness, entertainment content from partners like HBO and Netflix, etc. &#8212; started outpacing game usage on a yearly basis. There was 57 percent year-over-year growth in entertainment usage.</p>
<p>Microsoft also sent over some more stats: 24 million Kinects have been sold, up from 20 million last year, and there are 46 million Xbox Live accounts, up from 40 million.</p>

<p>Redmond is facing all sorts of challenges, but its Xbox is a clear success, not only as a gaming console, but as an Internet-connected entertainment device, which gives users access to video services like Netflx and HBO Go, and, increasingly, cable programming from the likes of ESPN. Microsoft says Xbox users now spend more time consuming media than playing games.</p>
<p>Which is why we&#8217;re very excited to bring two key Xbox executives onstage next month at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/conferences/dive-into-media/about/"><strong>D: Dive into Media</strong></a>: Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of Microsoft&#8217;s Interactive Entertainment Business, and Nancy Tellem, the former CBS executive who is building a new production studio for the device.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been nice to see all the euphoria at Yahoo about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120729/in-week-two-marissa-mayer-googifies-yahoo-free-food-friday-afternoon-all-hands-new-work-spaces-fab-swag/">free food</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120821/this-week-in-marissya-iphones-for-all-flickr-love-and-management-musical-chairs/">Apple iPhones</a> kicking it up a notch. </p>
<p>But, purple people, guess what? <em>Them&#8217;s</em> just your basic table stakes in Silicon Valley these days and pretty much everyone else has had such perks for a long while now.</p>
<p>Thus, as nice as it is to drink your coconut water gratis, after two months in charge, it&#8217;s long past time to focus on what new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is up to besides making much-needed but obvious cultural changes at the troubled Internet giant.</p>
<p>She&#8217;s been busy with the expected listening tour of employees and also outside tech players &#8212; such as former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel &#8212; which is a textbook stop in the turnaround playbook.</p>
<p>Now comes the hard part: Actually beginning to make the significant decisions about how she&#8217;s going to turn around Yahoo and what the key issues of strategic focus need to be. </p>
<p>In a series of recent meetings, according to numerous sources inside the company, Mayer has begun to outline what those are to top staff.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, they are many of the same thorny issues that Yahoo has been facing for a long time and which center primarily on making the company relevant again in a wide number of ways.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll get to many of them over the next week in a series of What Will Marissa Do? posts &#8212; including looking closely at her new hires, when and how Mayer will deal with inevitable layoff decisions facing the company, where the sale of Yahoo! Japan stands and, finally, what she&#8217;s cooking up for key Yahoo products.</p>
<p>But the focus has to fall first of all on search and advertising, the two arenas that Mayer has been studying most closely, according to numerous sources close to the situation. </p>
<p>That has included a recent meeting and numerous discussions with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer about improving Yahoo&#8217;s search advertising partnership, said sources at both companies. </p>
<p>That deal has been largely disappointing since it was struck under the regime of ousted CEO Carol Bartz several years ago. </p>
<p>Many reasons are given for the poor performance of the entire arrangement, including lack of improvement of cost per click and share growth for both parties. That means bid density and numbers of advertisers remain too low, especially compared to Google&#8217;s offering of access to a larger, more active and lucrative market.</p>
<p>Simply put, despite massive spending by Microsoft on search, users and advertisers get significantly better results overall with the search leader Google.</p>

<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120921/what-will-marissa-do-yahoo-ceo-zeroes-in-on-search-while-her-ad-team-eyes-tech-upgrade-options/marissa_mayer_at_d-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-253002"><img src="http://i2.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2012/09/marissa_mayer_at_d.png?resize=380%2C284" alt="" title="marissa_mayer_at_d" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-253002" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p>The irony abounds that it&#8217;s up to Mayer to fix this problem of improving revenue per search with Ballmer, since she has been among the executives who have made Google the search behemoth it has become. </p>
<p>Her particular expertise has been on search experience for consumers, which is just the area that Yahoo desperately needs to improve after handing over technology duties to Microsoft.</p>
<p>That move was controversial at the time and some feel it was a big mistake. But, most also think there is no going back at this point, given the enormous cost of running a serious search enterprise. </p>
<p>Such an idea is still being raised inside Yahoo, although it seems more nostalgic than a realistic possibility, given the enormous price and, more importantly, the departure of the company&#8217;s core search engineers in recent years. </p>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean Yahoo under Mayer can&#8217;t be key to helping solve Microsoft&#8217;s search tech problems. She certainly knows the entire arena, which has already given Yahoo increased credibility among Microsoft&#8217;s search engineers.</p>
<p>&#8220;None of Yahoo&#8217;s many CEOs knew anything about search technology and that&#8217;s certainly not the case here with Mayer,&#8221; said one person close to the situation at Microsoft. &#8220;When she walks in, she instantly has status among the geeks as someone who knows what she&#8217;s talking about.&#8221;</p>
<p>It still may be a losing battle, due to Google&#8217;s overwhelming dominance, but if anyone at Yahoo can spot areas of even small improvement &#8212; which can yield big returns &#8212; it could be Mayer.</p>
<p>In addition, she can spearhead Yahoo&#8217;s own efforts to reverse &#8212; or perhaps simply stop &#8212; search market share declines via delivering a better consumer offering. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s still heavy lifting, no matter the exec, since both Microsoft&#8217;s Bing and Google are better equipped to win here, too.</p>
<p>&#8220;It hard to imagine we are going to slow down in any way,&#8221; said one former colleague of Mayer&#8217;s at Google to me recently in a rather ominous tone. &#8220;We&#8217;re only going to get more competitive.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Pressure much?</em> </p>
<p>And more: Mayer is under a time limit, since guaranteed payments Microsoft agreed to pay Yahoo for the shortfalls on what was promised will be running out next year. The pair has renegotiated that deal before, and it will likely have to do so again.</p>
<p>Of course, Mayer could try to walk and threaten to take Yahoo&#8217;s search business elsewhere, a move that former CEO Scott Thompson was mulling before his ouster. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s not a surprising ploy, except it is probably impossible to pull off, a fact acknowledged by top Yahoo execs.</p>
<p>&#8220;It might feel good to say we have options in search,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;But that ship sailed years ago.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, especially since Google is the only choice of possible alternate partners and such a move is rife with major obstacles.</p>
<p>There is the issue of the contract with Microsoft, which could lead to a potentially explosive legal struggle Yahoo can ill afford.</p>
<p>&#8220;They can try to get out of the deal,&#8221; said one high-ranking person at the software giant. &#8220;But that&#8217;s a lot easier threatened than done.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, there is the clear regulatory hairball any search hook-up between Google and Yahoo would lead to. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s happened before, which Mayer knows well since she was a top exec in Google&#8217;s business when it tried to partner with Yahoo as a way to prevent Microsoft&#8217;s hostile takeover bid for the company. </p>
<p>While times might have changed, Google is currently facing a likely battle with the Federal Trade Commission over its powerful search business, and trying to get Yahoo&#8217;s business now is a non-starter.</p>
<p>Thus, finally fixing the Microsoft partnership is key to Mayer&#8217;s success since it represents a little over one-third of revenue of Yahoo (see the chart below).</p>

<p>The bigger part of Yahoo&#8217;s business, as you can also see from the chart, has been display revenues. And that, too, has been a sorry tale of declines and ever more disappointing results.</p>
<p>A report by eMarketer on display market share had this depressing chart for Yahoo:</p>

<p>As is clear, the march downward for one-time leader Yahoo has been swift, and the prospects for the future are worse as Google and Facebook vie for leadership.</p>
<p>The reasons for this have been myriad, but Mayer has apparently decided that it&#8217;s been due in large part to the broken Yahoo ad tech platforms and their ever weaker performance. </p>
<p>As we have previously reported, she has determined that it&#8217;s now time to invest in improving them, both by funding internally and external acquisitions.</p>
<p>For that, she has formed a tight group of execs to scan the landscape for tasty and innovative treats for Yahoo to gobble up.</p>
<p>That includes: Scott Burke, SVP of Yahoo&#8217;s advertising and data platforms; Brian Silver, who runs the company&#8217;s Right Media Exchange; Xuhui Shao, a key engineering VP under Burke; and Mark Morrissey, the longtime tech exec who previously ran the company&#8217;s search business and was key to integrating the Microsoft search deal into place.</p>
<p>The cerebral Burke especially has been pushing ad platform improvement for a while and finally seems to have won the battle against detractors of the big and possibly grandiose plan by appealing to Mayer&#8217;s interest in not giving up. </p>
<p>Thus, the tabling of plans by Thompson, as well as interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, to outsource some of the automated parts of the display business to Google.</p>
<p>Those talks were very serious, as well as others to sell off Right Media, but they are done for now.</p>
<p>One major issue &#8212; the people in charge of the ad platform turnaround could also be seen (and most definitely are) as mired in Yahoo&#8217;s legacy of lackluster results and poor performance. </p>
<p>&#8220;It is kind of funny that the guys responsible for the decline now have the responsibility for fixing it,&#8221; said one source at Yahoo.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a fair point to be made.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s water under the bridge, apparently, since the group has been making the rounds, helped by Yahoo&#8217;s M&#038;A execs, with a wide range of companies in many different ad tech area being considered (and some dismissed), including: Mediaocean, Turn, Criteo, PubMatic and Millennial Media.</p>
<p>Millennial is the most interesting, because it is a mobile ad play, where Yahoo is exactly nowhere (to be fair, less than nowhere) after years of botched efforts. </p>
<p>As with other companies, this is a critical arena for Yahoo, and yet one more that Mayer needs to focus on. </p>
<p>Lastly, Mayer has to make sure Yahoo&#8217;s premium display business remains strong. This is much more based on relationships with large advertisers than on major sponsorship and branding offerings, as well as creating consumer products and content that is appealing to marketers.</p>
<p>This area is now headed up by former Google exec Michael Barrett, who has publicly said he was staying put for now at Yahoo as its chief of revenue. </p>
<p>In fact, because he is in charge of all sales, he occupies the second slot under Mayer on Yahoo&#8217;s now strangely configured, punctuation-impaired and information-free <a href="http://pressroom.yahoo.net/pr/ycorp/management.aspx">management page</a>. </p>
<p>But numerous sources inside and outside Yahoo said Barrett has also told many people that he is still not fully committed to staying in the role for the long haul.</p>
<p>If he eventually gets a lucrative exit package &#8212; something the new boss is not being very generous with overall, said sources &#8212; that will mean Mayer will need a high-profile and well-regarded ad exec to replace him; sources said Mayer has already begun reaching out to some candidates. </p>
<p>The pickings are slim, with only a few names on the list of those capable of taking on such a job. That includes: Demand Media&#8217;s Joanne Bradford, who was also a former top Yahoo exec; Microsoft&#8217;s Yusuf Mehdi; OWN&#8217;s Kathleen Kayse; MLB.com&#8217;s Bob Bowman; and any number of Google execs. </p>
<p>In that regard, as with all the other search and advertising overhaul efforts at Yahoo, it is a matter of attracting serious talent into the company going forward. </p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Microsoft is doubling the amount of content it offers on the Xbox this year with 35 new content partnerships and the introduction of a brand new music service it is calling Xbox Music.</p>

<p>The company spent the first 20 minutes of its press conference on major new game releases for the console, such as Madden 12 and Halo 4, to satisfy the crowd. But after a few obligatory game announcements, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120604/live-from-e3-microsoft-xbox-event/">it turned its focus to a series of entertainment announcements</a>.</p>
<p>The concentration makes a whole lot of sense today, given that more people are using their Xbox to watch video and listen to music online than they are playing multi-player games &#8212; for the hardcore gamers out there, sorry, but it&#8217;s true.</p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Yusuf Mehdi said content partnerships coming to the platform include ESPN, NBA, NHL, Univision, Paramount and Machinima. He also announced a new music service, called Xbox Music, which will feature 40 million new tracks, and work across Xbox, phones and PCs.</p>
<p>While ESPN has been available before, he said this time the sports content will be available 24 hours a day and include SportsCenter, ESPN2 and other favorites. He did not say whether users would also have a cable subscription to access it, which has been the case with content in the past.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-216257" title="e32012_xbox_entertainment" src="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2012/06/e32012_xbox_entertainment-380x253.jpg?resize=380%2C253" alt="" data-recalc-dims="1" />Microsoft also announced &#8220;Xbox SmartGlass,&#8221; which will allow Xbox users to pick up a video on their phone or tablet where they left off on their console. With Xbox SmartGlass, the tablet will also act as a kind of controller for games. For example, Microsoft demonstrated how a gamer can pause Halo 4, check his tablet for the specifications of the gun, then resume the game on the TV.</p>
<p>This integration between tablets and console was expected, but definitely steals a bit of Nintendo&#8217;s thunder, which has created a proprietary Gamepad tablet that interacts with its upcoming Wii U console.</p>
<p>And if that wasn&#8217;t enough content for the Xbox, Microsoft is also bringing Internet Explorer to the game console. Marc Whitten, who heads up Xbox Live, said people are always asking, &#8220;When will you bring the Web to Xbox?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;No one uses them [browers] because they are painfully slow. But with the intelligence of SmartGlass, Internet Explorer is coming to Xbox this year,&#8221; he announced.</p>

<p>Microsoft said today that longtime company veteran Yusuf Mehdi will be shifting roles to head marketing for the unit that includes its Xbox gaming division. Previously, Mehdi was in charge of the company&#8217;s online services division audience efforts. He will now report to Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business. </p>
<p>Here are the internal memos on the move from Online Services Division President Qi Lu and from Mattrick:</p>

<p>This email is to inform you that Yusuf Mehdi, Chief Audience Officer for OSD, will be moving on to a new and exciting chapter in his career, working for Don Mattrick, President of the Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB), as the Chief Marketing Officer for IEB, effective 12/05/2011.</p>
<p>Yusuf and I have been discussing his career plan for several months, and we both felt with OSD and OABG’s success and momentum, the time is right for Yusuf to take on a new challenge for Microsoft. With more than ten years of service in Microsoft&#8217;s online services businesses, he has been a trusted adviser, a great leader of people, and has helped get us to where we are today in OSD. We are fortunate to have had Yusuf be an important part of OSD for the past ten years, and are equally fortunate that he is staying close, helping IEB continue its great momentum as it becomes a global entertainment brand for Microsoft.</p>
<p>Throughout my tenure at OSD, Yusuf has been a key member of the OSD LT and a trusted partner, from whom I have learned a tremendous amount about marketing, the industry, and Microsoft. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Yusuf and I am confident he will do an amazing job for Don, and continue to be a great partner to OSD and a great advocate for Bing and MSN.</p>
<p>Yusuf has been involved with leading Microsoft Online Services businesses longer than anyone else on the OSD LT, and has been a pivotal leader at critical milestones of our division’s journey from the early days of MSN, to the original MSN and Live Search products, to the launch of Bing and the consummation of key strategic deals for OSD and MS, including Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter and Nokia. Most importantly, he has built a world class marketing, business development, strategy, and product management organization that has made incredible contributions to the success of OSD and Microsoft. I want to take this opportunity to express my heart-felt thanks to Yusuf for everything he has done for OSD.</p>
<p>I have asked each of Yusuf&#8217;s direct reports to step up their contribution to help lead through this transition period. On an interim basis, all of Yusuf’s directs will now report into me. <p>After 21 years of outstanding service, Mike Delman has decided to retire from Microsoft at the end of the calendar year. Mike&#8217;s decision will allow him to spend more time with his family. He will also  continue his non-profit efforts with Children&#8217;s Hospital and lecture at the USC Graduate School of Business.</p>
<p>While there&#8217;s never a great time to lose a valued leader, the time is right for Mike and the business to transition as we embark on our next journey to significantly grow our business in the next five years. </p>
<p>Between now and the end of the year, Mike will lead marketing through our biggest holiday ever, continue to set us up for long-term success, and work with me and Janet Zimmerman to identify his successor. </p>
<p>Mike&#8217;s marketing contributions at Microsoft are innumerable &#8212; he joined Microsoft in 1990 as director of corporate communications, responsible for advertising, collateral, point of sale, direct marketing and worldwide packaging for the entire Microsoft product line. Mike later became the director of marketing for Microsoft EMEA. He also served as general manager of the MSN and managed worldwide marketing operations, data and analytics, advertising, relationship marketing and events in the Central Marketing Group. </p>
<p>In 2008, he joined IEB as the CVP of IEB Global Marketing. Here in IEB, Mike played an extraordinary role in redefining the marketing organization. Specifically, under his leadership, the marketing organization has deepened the connection between marketing and product development, reinvigorated our research and business intelligence efforts, and set the course for repositioning Xbox from a core games brand to an entertainment brand for everyone.  Over the same time period, the Xbox business doubled. I also want to thank Mike for his leadership in working with the team in EMEA to drive growth and success in that region.  </p>
<p>Please join me in thanking Mike for his years of great work, and a heartfelt congratulations on his upcoming retirement.  He has always been a strong strategic advisor for me, and I look forward to spending the next few months together. </p>

<p>The firing of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz leaves open one of the bigger and more difficult jobs in tech &#8212; one that has taken its toll on many.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, rapper Snoop Dogg stepped right up to the Twitter plate yesterday, as soon as news broke of the ouster.</p>

<p>&#8220;Im takn over as tha CEO of Yahoo. Need sum of tha Snoop Dogg content ya digg. Nuff Said.&#8221;</p>

<p>Thus, while the Yahoo board has yet to begin a search, I have already been hard at work on selecting the next CEO. </p>

<p>Sources said Yahoo is looking for an experienced Internet type, either from inside or outside the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo has put its flag in the ground as a digital media company with a technology base,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The job requires big buckets of expertise and needs someone who will grow the company.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Peter Chernin:</strong> The former News Corp. exec has been eyeing Yahoo for a possible takeover with other investors. Both Yahoo and I had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101117/enter-the-chernin-former-news-corp-president-and-coo-in-yahoo-what-if-mix/">picked him</a> when co-founder Jerry Yang stepped down as CEO almost three years ago, and he had declined the offer. Well-liked in the ad business, she also knows where all the bodies are buried at Yahoo. Since ads and media are key at the company, she&#8217;d make an interesting choice.</p>

And, though pricey, Mehdi&#8217;s impact on Bing search has been important. But he&#8217;s also been involved in the software giant&#8217;s lackluster ad and search partnership and still has not turned around the situation at MSN.</p>

But the well-regarded exec &#8212; he&#8217;s a snazzy dresser, too &#8212; ran one of the Internet&#8217;s top digital ad agencies and now has tech chops from the content delivery network.</p>
<p>Memo to Yahoo board: I have a million more ideas, from former Viacom exec Tom Freston to former Yahoo board member Eric Hippeau. Or why not bring back a passel of former Yahoos to advise, such as former CEO Terry Semel or former president Sue Decker?</p>
<p>Or Oprah! I hear Winfrey will be in Silicon Valley later this week, and she has a lot more free time now. </p>

<p>Called &#8220;Imagine 2011: Marketing Leadership Summit&#8221; and held at its Redmond, Wa. HQ, the two-day gathering is designed to wow peeps by trotting out a spate of <em>strategery</em> concepts those who buy advertising on Microsoft&#8217;s various digital offerings from its Bing search service to MSN to Xbox to Windows Phone 7.</p>
<p>Some program topics: &#8220;Elsewhere USA,&#8221; &#8220;Teens Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out&#8221; and &#8220;Audience Buying Goes Real-Time: True or False?&#8221;</p>
<p>Presumably the goal of all this heavy-duty thinkery is to get these marketers to buy more ads from Microsoft by warning them about being left behind on the platform as the train chugs inevitably off to the digital future.</p>
<p>And just in case that doesn&#8217;t work, there will be a free concert tonight featuring the hipster band Train for the Imagine 2011 attendees at Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen&#8217;s Experience Music Project venue to open those ad wallets.</p>
<p>Hey, Geek Mister: Stop sending all those digital marketing bucks to Google and Facebook and give them to us!</p>

<p>Before a panoply of various social, design and anthropology experts pontificated, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer kicked off the day with his patented loud and lovable Ed McMahon act, complete with the booming catchphrases.</p>

<p>&#8220;You have to move forward or die!&#8221; (About the Web.)</p>
<p>&#8220;If you wanna get big, you have to think big!&#8221; (About the Windows 7 Phone smartphone deal with Nokia.)</p>
<p>I love the U.S. government, I don&#8217;t want to give it a hard time.&#8221; (About its crappy Web site, not the antitrust conviction thing.)</p>
<p>Ballmer outlined some key trends, which are not new to anyone paying attention over the last five years: Location; social; pervasive displays; ubiquitous connectivity; computers everywhere; cloud; data; and natural user interaction</p>
<p>He also joked about how there were 10 fake Steve Ballmers on Facebook, all using Steve Ballmer photos. <em>Imagine that!</em></p>
<p>You&#8217;d think Microsoft&#8217;s badillion-dollar investment in the social networking site would get you a verified account!</p>

<p>Actually, pissed off is more related to the fact that the person who conceived and organized the Imagine 2011 event was former global ad sales head Carolyn Everson.</p>
<p>But, she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">left the company</a> in mid-February after only six months, for essentially the same job at Microsoft partner Facebook.</p>
<p>Since then Microsoft and Facebook have been wrangling over the talent raid, including Microsoft even considering <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110302/exclusive-microsoft-mulls-legally-poking-facebook-over-ad-talent-raid/">legal action to block the move</a>.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the show must go on and it did in a pretty classy way.</p>
<p>But not without another road bump in today&#8217;s action&#8211;the news that Microsoft&#8217;s own marketing head, longtime company veteran <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/awkward-as-microsoft-marketing-event-opens-its-longtime-marketing-head-announces-retirement/">Mich Mathews</a>, was leaving the software giant later this year.</p>
<p>The departure had the halls buzzing about what happened and who will be taking over the big job with a $1 billion marketing budget.</p>
<p>Maybe some external CMO sitting right there in the audience or perhaps some internal Microsoft candidate such as Yusuf Mehdi or Capossela?</p>
<p>I suppose it&#8217;s time for some strategery <em>stat</em>!</p>

<p>After yesterday&#8217;s press event at which Facebook and Microsoft <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101013/liveblogging-the-bing-facebook-bromance/">declared their never-ending love for each other via a search integration</a> into the Bing service of a lot of data from the powerful social networking behemoth, I sat down to talk about it with Yusuf Mehdi, a longtime exec at the software giant.</p>
<p>It is the first sign of a major deployment of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">deal announced last year</a> between Microsoft (MSFT) and Facebook.</p>
<p>The theme, according to Mehdi, who demoed the new social features and quoted the Beatles, was search with &#8220;a little help from your friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>After execs from both companies spent a lot of time air-kissing each other over the whole thing and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg happily threw some raspberries at search giant Google (GOOG), BoomTown sat down with Mehdi for an interview.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the video of that, done in an odd fake living room&#8211;no idea on the many old radios&#8211;at Microsoft&#8217;s Silicon Valley HQ:</p>

<p>BoomTown motored on down to the Microsoft campus in Silicon Valley on a fabulously sunny day to liveblog the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101013/more-bling-from-bing-as-microsoft-adds-social-zing-and-more/">latest Bing event</a>.</p>
<p>The software giant is updating its search service, announcing deep integration&#8211;part of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">deal announced last year</a>&#8211;with Facebook.</p>
<p>The theme, according to Microsoft (MSFT) SVP Yusuf Mehdi, quoting the Beatles, was search with &#8220;a little help from your friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope it&#8217;s not: &#8220;Help, I need somebody.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:35 am PT:</strong> Mehdi kicks off the show, announcing the line-up, which includes Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>Well, it just got 100 percent more interesting here in this nondescript auditorium.</p>
<p>Mehdi talks a little bit about the future of search and making it better. He talks about social being an important part of it.</p>

<p>While I&#8217;d have gone with Barry Manilow, he quotes the Beatles.</p>
<p>Mehdi is followed by Microsoft Online Services Division President Qi Lu, who throws more love bombs at Facebook.</p>
<p>&#8220;With the partnershop of Facebook and Bing, we will be able to unlock&#8230;how people in a social relationship can be first-class citizens in a search experience,&#8221; said Lu.</p>
<p>It sounds so lofty, even though it is mostly trading movie review recommendations or good places to take the kids on a rainy Sunday.</p>
<p>Lu thanks Zuckerberg effusively and invites him onstage.</p>
<p><strong>11:54 am:</strong> No hoodie.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg is also &#8220;honored to be here,&#8221; giving us a little history lesson about the origins of the social networking giant and its various and sundry efforts.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, the lack of donuts is making me distracted.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s not actually saying more than bromides about &#8220;what would social search look like.&#8221;</p>
<p>And looking around at who would be the right partner in the arena. Microsoft! Of course! That giant investment way back when was nice too!</p>
<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re really the underdog here,&#8221; said Zuckerberg in the first interesting comment, noting that overdogs&#8211;that would be Google (GOOG), which he does not mention by name&#8211;never innovate much.</p>
<p>His take: Underdogs are the <em>best</em>.</p>

<p><strong>12:01 pm</strong>: Mehdi is back to show off the wares in a demo.</p>
<p>First, what&#8217;s there. Web search in Facebook and Facebook status updates on Bing.</p>
<p>Zzzzzzzz. Get to the good stuff!</p>
<p>First, a module that brings in a Like module from Facebook into the search, with all the other information provided by Bing.</p>
<p>It is, said, Mehdi, particular for a person.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is going to profoundly change how we search,&#8221; he said of personalized experiences.</p>
<p>Mehdi also shows off a way to differentiate your friends who have names of famous people, who are the ones who come up on search first.</p>
<p>Interesting, but people search is not the biggest problem I have.</p>
<p>He also says more is coming, such as friend experts surfacing in search and Like in every result on a page that it was possible. Yipes!</p>
<p>Also, thank the Lord, the ability to turn it off.</p>
<p><strong>12:15 pm:</strong> Now Facebook exec Dan Rose comes up and starts talking about the Facebook-Microsoft bromance.</p>
<p>Apparently, four years is an eternity in Silicon Valley in terms of a relationship.</p>
<p>Actually, four weeks is long, so congrats you two crazy kids!</p>
<p>I&#8217;d celebrate with a donut if they were <em>here</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;More and more&#8221; social in Bing, said Rose.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a match made in digital heaven!</p>

<p><strong>12:22 pm:</strong> Q&#038;A time!</p>
<p>So what more? The press is so unsatisfied! Yes, we are.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg takes the lead. New interfaces! More!</p>
<p>A privacy question. &#8220;This is Instant Personalization,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, who said that Facebook has five partners in that effort.</p>
<p>He explains Instant Personalization, saying he wants to clear up misconceptions.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s private enough, you oversharers!</p>
<p>&#8220;Just because it is all public information about you, this is really good,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But is it by default? Of course, it is. That&#8217;s Facebook modus operandi!</p>
<p>Opt-out should be tattooed on employees at Facebook as a requirement.</p>
<p>Bing does put up a warning at the top of the page, but only five times. Then, you need to go foraging to turn it off.</p>
<p>Next: Does Bing search queries get sent back to Facebook? Not necessarily.</p>
<p>But, &#8220;everything is going to be social eventually,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, as long as it is public.</p>
<p>Public is apparently the new black.</p>
<p>More questions about new Facebook Groups and other deets, none of which is that bracing.</p>
<p>Apropos of nothing, I am considering asking a question about the ever-exciting <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101012/hp-scandal-sucks-in-new-york-times-columnist/">Hewlett-Packard</a> (HPQ) scandal, just to jack up the volume.</p>
<p>I try to ask a question about Zuckerberg&#8217;s underdog comment, but no more time.</p>
<p>But Zuckerberg sort of addresses it, going on about why he has picked Microsoft as the favorite.</p>
<p>While he does not say it, it&#8217;s because Facebook is the overdog here and, as you know, every overdog needs an underdog.</p>

<p>Microsoft (MSFT) Online Services Division President Qi Lu will be there, as well as SVP Yusuf Mehdi, for&#8211;according to the invite&#8211;&#8221;a conversation about new directions and future opportunities of search and a demonstration of some new search innovation by Bing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Those two are the big guns at Bing, so this won&#8217;t be a minor update.</p>
<p>As has been widely reported, a lot will be about its continuing integration with Facebook data, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing">BoomTown scooped out</a> last year.</p>
<p>Big giant and sustained yawn, since it is a year gone and everyone is doing this in some fashion, including Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Unless, of course, it is executed in some distinct and unusual manner.</p>
<p>Maybe a search of Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s data, every time yours is displayed without explicit permission?</p>
<p>We can dream!</p>
<p>I am hoping, as before, there is some kind of mapping update, since Bing often shows some cool new stuff at these regular events.</p>
<p>And I&#8217;ll be asking about how the Yahoo search and online advertising partnership is going, natch.</p>

<p>The software company has been pushing hard in the search arena, trying to gain market share from the dominant Google (GOOG) and the No. 2 player, Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The effort has so far included a different look and feel and very detailed results in certain niches, such as travel and health.</p>
<p>The push to improve entertainment search is a natural one, given its popularity with consumers.</p>
<p>For example, Microsoft (MSFT) will now allow users to listen to entire songs from its 6.8 million-song catalog rather than just samples of the songs.</p>
<p>It will also offer lyrics and more detailed artist profiles, as well as loads of movie and television information.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be one of the two major players in search and we are building out to do that,&#8221; said Yusuf Mehdi, SVP of Microsoft&#8217;s Online Audience Business. &#8220;The economic opportunity of search is as good as it gets in the business, if we can make these inroads.&#8221;</p>
<p>Those inroads have been encouraging, with Bing gaining market share. But they have also been costly, with the Online Services division bleeding cash.</p>
<p>Of course, search is an area Microsoft cannot abandon, so I would imagine the push will continue.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s good for consumers, of course, and it sure is pretty.</p>

<p>Microsoft digital head Qi Lu took to the stage at the <a href="http://www.web2summit.com/web2009">Web 2.0 Summit</a> conference this morning, where he confirmed a &#8220;strategic&#8221; deal with both Facebook and Twitter to integrate real-time information into Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">broke news of those twin deals</a> earlier today.</p>
<p>Bing&#8217;s <a href="http://www.bing.com/twitter">Twitter integration in beta form is now live here</a> (see an image of it below; click on it to make it larger).</p>
<p><a href="http://i0.wp.com/kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/twitterbing2.jpg"><img src="http://i0.wp.com/kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/twitterbing2.jpg?resize=380%2C292" alt="twitterbing2" title="twitterbing2" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-19802" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><br />
Facebook&#8217;s integration will come later, said Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Before announcing the deal, Lu&#8211;who is a quintessential techie&#8211;first went a bit deep into the weeds to talk about &#8220;how we think about search.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said Lu: &#8220;To start with, we think about search holistically&#8230;it&#8217;s about user intent. What it amounts to is that you are trying to build a mind reader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Top MSN exec Yusuf Mehdi then bounded onstage to talk about the deals with Twitter and Facebook and do a demo, which was what the audience gathered in San Francisco wanted to hear about and see.</p>
<p>&#8220;If today&#8217;s search is about getting to the UPS or the FedEx site, tomorrow is much more complicated,&#8221; said Mehdi, who described the deals as &#8220;strategic.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) is also in talks with both Twitter and Facebook about a similar arrangement, but Microsoft&#8217;s move was a clear one-upsmanship with its search rival.</p>
<p>And what Mehdi showed was impressive, with the ability to sort tweets in a number of ways.</p>
<p>Such information in search will obviously improve results.</p>
<p>Lu gave few specific monetary or operational details of the service&#8211;such as if Facebook and Twitter get a cut of its search advertising revenue or if Microsoft will archive the status updates&#8211;mostly focusing on Twitter, since it is first to roll out.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just the beginning,&#8221; said Lu. &#8220;The Twitter corpus&#8230;is still evolving and emerging.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added Lu at the end: &#8220;Give us a try!&#8221;</p>

Which means that for the next few days, ad sellers will be meeting, greeting and buttering up ad buyers in hopes of prying some of their dollars free. Just like every week in New York.</p>
<p>One difference for the likes of me: Big ad sellers are making themselves very available to the press. This morning, for instance, AOL sent out CEO Tim Armstrong, sales boss Jeff Levick, sales deputy Erin Clift and content boss Bill Wilson to poke at eggs and ignore a plateful of bagels and lox.</p>
<p>Oh, and they talked, too! The big message was that they&#8217;re still in the process of overhauling the Internet giant on behalf of Time Warner (TWX), which brought in Armstrong from Google (GOOG) earlier this year and says it still plans on spinning off the company by the end of 2009.</p>
<p>Afterward, I got a brief interview (along with PaidContent&#8217;s David Armstrong) with the AOL chief. The video is at the bottom of the post, and you may need to turn up your speakers to hear it. But the takeaways are:</p>
<ul>
<li>AOL is still looking for a chief marketing officer. The search is in the &#8220;early stages.&#8221; Do you know anyone? Internet experience is not a prerequisite.</li>
<li>More org chart moves, like the one that saw <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090915/another-aol-org-chart-shuffle-coo-partoll-search-boss-kannapell-out/">COO Kim Partoll pushed out last week</a>, are coming. They&#8217;ll be part of the internal review process Armstrong has dubbed &#8220;Project Everest,&#8221; which should be complete by the end of the year.</li>
<li>So are layoffs. See above.</li>
<li>Internet ad dollars are beginning to flow out again&#8211;or if they&#8217;re not flowing, Armstrong thinks they will be, as big marketers like Procter &amp; Gamble (PG) make permanent shifts in their advertising mixes.</li>
<li>Armstrong professes to be surprised by a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-did-microsofts-yusuf-mehdi-meet-with-aols-tim-armstrong-2009-9">report</a> last week that he had met with Yusuf Mehdi, who runs Bing and MSN for Microsoft (MSFT). &#8220;I know Yusuf. I&#8217;ve known him personally for years. So if I saw him I would be happy, but&#8230;&#8221;</li>

<p>Elsewhere in Seattle, BoomTown got some of the lowdown on the machinations in the wake of the Yahoo-Microsoft deal. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090804/microsofts-point-man-on-search-satya-nadella-speaks-its-a-game-of-scale/">Satya Nadella</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090803/microsofts-yusuf-mehdi-speaks-yahoo-has-a-fantastic-opportunity/">Yusuf Mehdi</a> are just two of the Microsoft (MSFT) execs charged with leveraging the deal to knock Google (GOOG) out of its number one spot. They each sat down in front of the Flip camera to share their thoughts.</p>
<p>BoomTown also noted the beginning of the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090804/yahoo-microsoft-regulatory-filings-begin-this-week-let-the-legal-game-playing-begin/">Yahoo-Microsoft regulatory filings</a> this week and provided the full document of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090804/as-promised-heres-the-yahoos-8-k-to-the-sec-about-the-microsoft-deal-the-full-document/">Yahoo&#8217;s (YHOO) 8-K</a> to the Securities and Exchange Commission about the deal. To think: this is only the tip of the MicroHoo iceberg.</p>
<p>If you were one of the many wondering about Twitter&#8217;s high-profile outage this week, don&#8217;t worry&#8211;Kara provided a handy <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090807/boomtown-decodes-twitters-denial-of-service-blog-post-so-you-dont-have-to/">translation of the co-founder Biz Stone&#8217;s blog post</a> about the whole matter. If you weren&#8217;t wondering at all, you&#8217;re not alone&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090807/the-outage-aftermath-louie-swisher-hearts-facebook-but-twitter-not-so-much/">Kara&#8217;s mother and older son, Louie</a>, think the whole thing is a waste of time.</p>
<p>Google CEO Eric Schmidt&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090803/google-ceo-resigns-from-apples-board-of-directors/">resignation</a> from Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090803/google-ceo-bails-on-apple-board/">board of directors</a> was just some of the news on Digital Daily this week. In some of the other news, the FTC responded with a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090803/ftc-to-google-ceo-apple-nice-try/">&#8220;nice try, but we&#8217;ll continue our investigation anyway.&#8221;</a> Better news for Apple, then, that it <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090804/iphone-claims-32-percent-of-handset-industry-operating-profits/">claims 32 percent of operating profits</a> in the handset industry, even though it&#8217;s only the fifth-largest handset vendor.</p>
<p>In the not-so-good department on Digital Daily this week, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090805/news-corp-swings-to-loss-on-impairment-and-by-impairment-i-mean-myspace/">NewsCorp.</a> (NWS) (which owns the Wall Street Journal and this Web site) reported a 32.5 percent drop in fiscal-year-adjusted operating income&#8211;largely because of its &#8220;red-hot&#8221; social network, MySpace. Elsewhere, Cisco (CSCO) reported a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090805/a-46-percent-drop-in-profit-and-cisco-still-beats-estimates/">46 percent drop in quarterly profit</a> while still beating the Street&#8217;s estimates, and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090805/vonage-churning-subscribers-stomachs-2/">Vonage</a> (VG) recorded a second-quarter profit of $2.3 million while losing 89,000 net subscribers in the same quarter.</p>
<p>On <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090805/new-netbook-offers-long-battery-life-and-room-to-type/">Personal Tech</a>, Walt Mossberg reviewed a new netbook from Toshiba this week great  battery life and a winning keyboard, among other things. On the <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090804/playing-with-a-more-sensitive-wii/">Mossberg Solution</a>, Katie Boehret reviewed the Wii MotionPlus remote accessory, an add-on to the Wii remote that includes a gyroscope and allows for more precision and sensitivity in gameplay. Walt responded to readers on <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20090805/mossbergs-mailbox-5/">Mossberg&#8217;s Mailbox</a>, answering emails about buying a new no-frills laptop, switching ISPs and moving contacts emails without too much pain, and discerning the minimum system requirements for Windows 7.</p>
<p>Walt went into a little more detail about Windows 7 on his MossBlog. Unfortunately, he discovered that more detail does not equal more clarity when it comes to a Windows 7 upgrade. At his request, Microsoft sent along a handy chart meant to simplify all aspects of the matter for readers. It is an <a href="http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/20090804/deciphering-windows-7-upgrades-the-official-chart/">astoundingly, even comically, complicated document</a>. The company has promised to send a newer, simpler one. Stay tuned.</p>

<p>Another Microsoft exec BoomTown spoke to&#8211;while in Seattle last week&#8211;was Satya Nadella, SVP of Research and Development at its Online Services division, also known as the man in charge of search and online advertising technology for the just-struck partnership with Yahoo.</p>
<p>Nadella came to Microsoft in 1992 from Sun Microsystems (JAVA)&#8211;much like another company lifer and key dealmaker in the Yahoo partnership, Yusuf Mehdi, whom I also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090803/microsofts-yusuf-mehdi-speaks-yahoo-has-a-fantastic-opportunity/">interviewed via video here</a>.</p>
<p>After all that time, though, Nadella is probably facing his biggest challenge yet.</p>
<p>Because how the search business of Microsoft (MSFT) evolves, improves and, most of all, <em>out-innovates</em>&#8211;especially in the face of heretofore withering competition from search behemoth Google (GOOG)&#8211;is going to be a big factor in the success of the deal with Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>In fact, the Silicon Valley Internet giant has essentially put its search technology eggs in the software company&#8217;s work-in-progress basket.</p>
<p>Now the Microsoft team must make a series of innovative tech leaps in order to grab more market share beyond what the pair bring to the table together.</p>
<p>Nadella, who was one of the key execs involved in the deal, has to make sure the companies hold onto top talent until the partnership is approved, while continuing to keep up the momentum of its new Bing search offering.</p>
<p><em>No pressure, Satya! </em></p>
<p>Nadella does acknowledge in the video interview here that Microsoft has has not been able to catch up with Google and talks about how that might now be possible.</p>

<p>It finally stuck for Mehdi, who has been with Microsoft for closing in on two decades (although he still kind of looks like a teenager).</p>
