Beating Google?

Is there anything more fun than sitting around, growing your hair, drinking a Bud while listening to Jethro Tull and pondering how to change the balance of power in the search world and unseat Google? Better search? Too subjective. Better monetization? After the fact. Better User Interface? Will we know it when we see it? A new and different search? Semantic? Human powered? We won’t know till we know. But what about the Google Index — all the Web sites that are indexed by Google? What is it worth to be in the Google Index?

    I believe that Google is hurting itself with its ad model. As an example, do a search for the term “smartcar” and click on all the sponsored search results. 70% of them are websites that display “ads by Google” on them. I understand that this is a good revenue model now, to get paid twice from one visitor, but studies we have been doing show that people are flat out sick of seeing “ads by google” littered across the web.

    They are going to do to themselves what Alta Vista, Yahoo, Excite did to themselves by killing their ad revenue platform by displaying too many banners and deterring people from clicking on them.

    Their organic search results are still the best, but I do believe they will eventually start losing market share due to people getting sick of seeing them.

    I am very happy that allthingsd.com is moderating a discussion about Mr. Cuban’s blog post.

    I commented on Mr. Cuban’s post, but my comment was removed from the post without any statement whatsoever concerning the censorship (at least Tim O’Reilly was honest enough to note that he was “confused” by Indian domain names when he removed my comment last year — see http://www.aboutus.org/OReilly.com ).

    I have now posted a question on my own blog — which, if Mr. Cuban is a “maverick”, will probably note — along with all the other mavericks (including e.g. the “cluetrain” gang) — is interconnected with his own blog (since Google is such a rockin’ machine ;P).

    However, in case hasn’t found it yet (for the simple reason that Google mostly indexes old, archived documents rather than newer, “live” information), here is a link to my blog post asking why Mr. Cuban censored my comment:

    I invite any/all participation, as I would really like to know what was so “wrong” with my comment that it motivated Mr. Cuban to censor it.
