Oh boy, anotehr confusing acronym (which I guess technically it really isn’t) to add to the list:

ATM: Asynchronous transfer mode, or automatic teller machine.

SMB: Small and medium sized business and server message block networking protocol.

POP: Dial-up point of presence, Internet mail reading protocol, or: “Another measurement, a “pop”, represents 1000 persons within the geographic area covered by a particular licensing block.”

Don’t people who come up with names for new things have any imagination any more?

Lets just call all new technological things “foo” from now on and be done with it.

About Voices

This is a section of the AllThingsD Web site featuring posts that have been curated from around the Web: pieces we’ve read, discussions we’ve followed, stuff we like. Five posts are included here each weekday, but only the headline and the first two sentences. We link to the original site for the rest. The section is explicitly labeled, so it’s clear that content comes “from other Web sites.”

We also solicit original full-length posts and accept some unsolicited submissions. Voices is edited by Beth Callaghan.
