Droid Void: The X Stands for Xtra Hard to Find
It may not be quite as popular as Apple’s iPhone, but Motorola’s new Droid X is selling quite well. Indeed, Gleacher and Co. analyst Mark McKechnie says his channel checks show the device sold out at most Verizon Wireless stores.
“Our checks suggest virtually no Droid X phones available in Verizon retail outlets through Sunday, July 25, with limited ‘re-stock’ shipments since the original channel fill,” McKechnie said in note to clients today. With current production being used to fill pre-order backlog, new orders are currently being given shipping dates of August 4. That’s good news for Motorola, which reports second-quarter earnings on Thursday. Given scarce supplies of Droid X amid strong demand, McKechnie expects the company to raise its 2010 Android smartphone shipment number to 14 million units from 12 million.
