Carriers Offer Free Calls to Japan
A welcome gesture from AT&T, Verizon and MetroPCS this morning for subscribers with friends and family in Japan, which is slowly recovering from the worst earthquake in memory. AT&T is offering offering free calls and text messages from the U.S. to Japan through March. Billing relief is effective March 11 and will continue through the 31st. For its residential wireline customers, AT&T is providing 60 minutes of free call time from the United States to Japan. Verizon’s offer of free calls and texts to Japan runs from March 11 through April 10. MetroPCS will be allowing free calls to landlines and texting to numbers in Japan for the next 30 days for all of its subscribers. MetroPCS will also allow free calls to mobile numbers and hasn’t yet set an end date to that support.
