MetroPCS’s Net Profit Surges on Lower Costs per User
MetroPCS Communications Inc.’s second-quarter earnings rose 77 percent as the discount cell-phone company’s subscriber base fell for the first time in its history, reducing the carrier’s costs.
Shares jumped Thursday on the stronger-than-expected profit, driven in part by a 19 percent drop in equipment costs amid lower promotional spending on high-end handsets. The stock has fallen 63 percent over the past year.
