Amid Declining PC Market, Lenovo Says It Would Consider Bid for RIM, Others

lenovo_blackberry_playbookWith its core computing business in decline, Lenovo said it would consider acquisitions to help it expand its product line.

Among the possibilities would be struggling Canadian phone maker Research In Motion, which has been considering a number of strategic options even as it works to launch its all-new BlackBerry 10 operating system this year.

“We are looking at all opportunities — RIM and many others,” Lenovo Chief Financial Officer Wong Wai Ming said, speaking to Bloomberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We’ll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders.”

Bloomberg said Wong told it that the Chinese electronics giant has spoken to RIM and its bankers about various possibilities but declined to say when it might decide whether to make a bid for the BlackBerry maker.

Lenovo already makes its own line of phones and tablets using software from Microsoft and Google.
