Yandex Co-Founder Ilya Segalovich Passes Away

Yandex co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Ilya Segalovich died yesterday at the age of 48. He had been responding well to treatment for cancer when he collapsed into a coma on Wednesday with no sign of brain activity. Yandex had initially reported Segalovich had passed away, but corrected the statement later in the day. He was removed from life support yesterday when doctors detected blood changes that were incompatible with life.

Segalovich co-founded Yandex with CEO Arkady Volozh in 1997, and the search engine became the so-called Google of Russia. It raised $1.3 billion in an IPO on the Nasdaq Stock Market in May 2011, and currently has a $10 billion dollar valuation and a 62 percent market share in Russia.

Segalovich will be buried in Moscow this week.
