Facebook Mainstay Peter Deng Shifts Roles to Director of Product at Instagram

Peter Deng, a Facebook veteran of the past six years, is moving roles inside the company to become director of product at Instagram.

In his new position, Deng will be responsible for scaling up the team working on the Facebook-owned, massively popular photo (and video!) sharing service, which already stands at about 50 employees.

He’ll report directly to Kevin Systrom, co-founder and leader of Instagram.

Deng’s last role was as director of product, helping to build Facebook’s core applications — including Messenger, Photos and News Feed, among others — where he reported directly to Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer.

Before his time at Facebook, Deng was in product marketing at Google, and previous to that, he did a short stint at Microsoft.

Naomi Gleit, an employee second in tenure at Facebook only to Mark Zuckerberg, will take over Deng’s old position as director of product for core apps.

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
