Sketchfab’s $2 Million Funding Should Mean Lots More Fun 3-D Renderings of New Tech Gear

Sketchfab announced on Thursday that it has raised a $2 million funding round as it seeks to become “the YouTube of 3-D renderings.”

The funding comes from existing angel investors along with Balderton Capital, Partech Ventures, Borealis Ventures and TechStars founder David Cohen.

“I’m thrilled to announce that we have just closed a new round of financing which will help us carry our vision to the next level, and become THE platform and community for 3-D models on the web,” CEO Alban Denoyel said in a blog post. “We’re still at the beginning and a long road lies ahead. It means we can continue building the best in-browser 3-D viewing technology and platform.”

Hopefully, the money means that the company will also be able to keep making its renderings of just-announced tech gear, as it did this week with Amazon’s Prime Air drone.

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
