Samsung Expands Its Galaxy With Five-Inch Phone, Seven-Inch Tablet

Aiming to make sure it has a Galaxy product at every size in the universe, Samsung on Thursday introduced a new seven-inch Galaxy tablet and a five-inch Galaxy Note device that is either a really big phone or a really small tablet.

The products, announced at Europe’s IFA consumer electronics show, both feature the Super Amoled Plus screen used on Samsung’s latest phones. The Galaxy Note also features the ability to be paired with a stylus in addition to touch input.

Samsung bills the Galaxy Note as an all-new category of device, though it is reminiscent of Dell’s five-inch Streak, a device that also fell somewhere between a phone and tablet in size.

The new Galaxy Tab is similar in size to last year’s, but adds many of the features of this year’s 10-inch model, including a dual-core processor, thinner design and the tablet-centric Honeycomb version of Android.

The company did not provide pricing or availability details. A Samsung representative said there are no current plans to bring either product to the U.S.

Samsung’s products can take some time to arrive stateside, with some models not making it here at all. The flagship Galaxy S II just got its U.S. launch this week, despite being first announced in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

There was a worry before I started this that I was going to burn every bridge I had. But I realize now that there are some bridges that are worth burning.
