Ahead of New iPhone Launch, Sprint Promises LTE Is Coming to Lots of Places at Some Point

With Apple likely to announce a new LTE-equipped version of its iPhone this week, Sprint figured now would be a good time to talk up its plans to expand its high-speed service areas.

The company announced plans to expand to 100 cities “in the coming months,” though it didn’t get any more specific about timing. Sprint currently offers LTE service in just 19 markets.

That puts the carrier well behind Verizon and AT&T, though ahead of T-Mobile USA, which has no iPhone to sell, and won’t have LTE service until sometime next year.

Among the cities that will be getting Sprint LTE service in the not-too-distant future are New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

“We are committed to delivering a cutting-edge network as quickly as possible, one that provides a greater level of reliability and speed to our 3G and 4G customers,” Senior VP Bob Azzi said in a statement.

Sprint started selling its first LTE-equipped phones in May — before it had formally launched service in any cities.
