Ready, Set, Collaboratively Design a 3-D Printed Rocket

Crowdsourced space technology company DIYRockets, 3-D design collaboration platform Sunglass, and 3-D printing marketplace Shapeways are working together to get people excited about something that’s inherently pretty exciting: 3-D printed rocket engines.

The three are kicking off a contest today with $10,000 in prizes, plus free printing, for the best open source designs, to be judged by inventor Dean Kamen and others.

This will be announced tomorrow in Austin at SXSW. There’s actually a surprising amount of content about space exploration at SXSW this year, including a keynote by Elon Musk, and at least six sessions about NASA.
