Apple Gives Away Popular Apps

Apple gave itself a pat on the back today, wishing a happy 5th anniversary to its App Store and taking the opportunity to point out milestones like the 50 billionth download May 16. (The official App Store anniversary is July 10. While we’re at it, happy 124th birthday, The Wall Street Journal.)

As a thank you to customers Apple said it is giving away 10 apps that it considers awesome. A handful of sites earlier today called it, noting that a bunch of apps were suddenly free and guessing that it was a promotional move ahead of the anniversary. Apple’s banner in its app store went up hours later.
