Google Speeds Up Its Online Spreadsheets

Google Drive Sheets — a.k.a. the company’s spreadsheet-creation and editing tool — is getting an upgrade today. Most importantly, the formerly poky Web app is supposed to be much faster and able to handle many more cells and formulas.

In addition, Sheets will now work offline in the Chrome browser and on Chrome OS. That brings it up to pace with its sister products, Google Docs and Slides.

And there’s a collaboration angle, too. Different users can now filter and sort parts of a spreadsheet for their own personal view, without disturbing how others see it.

The new feature will be available as an opt-in for both personal and enterprise users.

I think the NSA has a job to do and we need the NSA. But as (physicist) Robert Oppenheimer said, “When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it and argue about what to do about it only after you’ve had your technical success. That is the way it was with the atomic bomb.”
