Greylock Commits $100 Million to Investing in the Future of Marketplaces

VC firm Greylock Partners announced on Thursday that it will commit to investing at least $100 million in entrepreneurs and companies working on marketplaces, or, as Greylock’s Simon Rothman puts it, “network effects businesses and transaction businesses.” (Think Lyft, Wanelo, etc.) Greylock also promoted Rothman, an executive in residence since 2011, to the position of partner on the firm’s consumer investment team, where he’ll focus on marketplace investments.

Outbrain Exec Guttman Hired to Oversee SoftBank’s $51 Million NY-Focused Startup Fund

Josh Guttman, who has most recently been an exec at content discovery platform Outbrain, has become a partner at Softbank Capital to manage its New York-focused startup fund. Guttman, who is an active angel investor in the region, will oversee the $51 million fund that the venture firm recently announced that will be aimed at high-growth opportunities in social, e-commerce, digital media and software-as-a-service startups in New York. Former News Corp Digital Exec Jon Miller Joins Shari Redstone’s Advancit as Partner

Former News Corp digital head Jon Miller has joined Advancit Capital as a partner. Advancit is an early-stage investment firm that was started two years ago by Shari Redstone and Jason Ostheimer; Redstone is the daughter of Sumner Redstone, director at CBS and Viacom, and president of National Amusements. Advancit has made several dozen investments over two years, many in the online media and entertainment arenas, including Maker Studios, Oyster and Circa. In 2011, a regulatory filing noted that the venture firm had raised $3.2 million. Miller — who used to work at Viacom, where he met Redstone — is the first non-family partner at Advancit.
