New Details Emerge in Google’s Bid for Motorola
Google Inc. boosted its offer for Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. by 33 percent in a single day in early August, even though Motorola wasn’t soliciting competing bids, according to a securities filing Tuesday.
The move added some $3 billion to the cost of a deal ultimately valued at $12.5 billion. The transaction gives Google a thick portfolio of patents to help defend its Android smartphone operating system and an in-house hardware maker that could make it a tougher competitor for iPhone maker Apple Inc.
